Poor Customer Service

  • 1 of 5

We agree with the previous reviews about the beautiful views and the proximity to the volcano and outdoor activities.

Unfortunately we misjudged the size of Pie 1 when we booked and when we arrived discovered that the facility had room for only a bed and no chairs. The only seating was outside in the rain and cold. Also the fridge in the room was a very small bar fridge - certainly not big enough for a week of cooking.

The management was very slow to respond to our emails and we and other newly arrived guests were left alone to sort ourselves out in the casitas. The Lodge was also closed for extended period and there was no one to help. We tracked down Z who very willingly relocated us to the larger Pie 2 for three nights of our 7 night stay. Pie 2 was extremely spacious and well appointed however we soon discovered that the bed was hard as a rock. Anyone who sleeps on their side and may have lower back issues should take note that these beds will force your spine out of alignment and may cause significant distress.

The grounds are beautiful with river rock, pools, etc. However the water in the pool is cold and with the cool air temperature (jackets required) it was like a polar bear dip.

After two days we were forced to abandon our time here as my husbands back began to bother him significantly. The management were not agreeable to any refund at all even though they had rented our original unit out the same day. All of our communication prior to arriving at Pie in the Sky was with Nancy but she never took the time to come and meet us. This was very disappointing as we always enjoy creating a relationship with our hosts. It was only because we ran into Z that we had any support at all.

Customer service is what brings people back to a location. We certainly do not feel that Nancy cared about our situation or was willing to help us out. We would not go back to Pie in the Sky again. It was the most expensive accommodation during our three weeks in Costa Rica and the only one that we were disappointed in.

Owner's Response: I would like for potential guests to know the truth about this situation, as there are always two sides to every story. This couple originally wanted the two bedroom home, but could not afford it, so I suggested since there was two of them that the one room cottage would be a nice fit and it is a very popular home for couples. It is small, one room with a bathroom and kitchenette, as described in this listing. There is a small table and 2 chairs, so there is a place to sit and eat, as well as a deck area with 2 chairs in the front overlooking the Volcano. At the time they arrived, my partner, whom is my husband, greeted them at the home to welcome them. Upon seeing the home they were disappointed in the size, which was very clear when I rented it to them, but since the two bedroom home was available, we upgraded them to that home to please them. They were thrilled and thought that we were wonderful and had nothing but wonderful things to say about us and the home. They were reserved to stay for 7 nights, but due to the fact it rained every day they asked to leave early and receive a refund. Our refund policy is clear and we do not refund money due to bad weather. The pool is not heated, the real issue was that it was raining, so not very many warm days to swim while they were there. The beds are perfectly fine and are very comfortable, orthopedic beds and we have never had a complaint thus far. It is absolutely untrue that we were slow in responding to emails or that we were not there leaving our guests to figure out things for themselves. Normally, either my husband, myself, the owner, or one of our staff greet guests, but I was out of town during their stay which in no way affected them as my husband and staff were there for them, so they were in no way inconvenienced. We did rent the cottage for one night while they were there, but we had every right to, as it was no longer theirs once we upgraded them to the larger home. We certainly could not be expected to give them both homes for the week. Sadly, this review is clearly a "pay back" for not refunding their money and it is unfortunate that a person is allowed to unjustly write a negative review because they were unhappy that it rained the entire time they were here. Reviews are not supposed to be used for this purpose. We are a five star property for a reason. We give excellent customer service and have the nicest rental homes in the area. Reading previous reviews tells the true story.

Beautiful house with amazing views!

  • 5 of 5

We stay in the 2 bedroom cottage. The house is beautiful, very comfortable, with a great kitchen and amazing, amazing views of the lake and volcano. It is also central to the various activities in the area. Nancy was a great help with suggestions (there are many activities to choose from) and in helping reserve the things we wanted to do. Our absolute favorite was the horseback ride to the waterfall with Lilander!

Absolutely amazing property!

  • 5 of 5

Myself, my husband and another couple visited Costa Rica for the first time this past December and stayed in Pie 2. WOW! Just beautiful! The grounds were meticulously landscaped and the views of the Arenal Volcano were breathtaking! The property is shared by two other rentals but we really had the entire mountain to ourselves while we were there. The pool was amazing and we took advantage of it more than once. There is a large covered patio space just above the pool with a gas grill (and great 360 degree views!) where we ate dinner every night. Nancy and her husband were a joy to meet; warm, wonderful and accommodating; making last minute reservations for us at EcoTermales and arranging a day at Skytrek before we arrived. My husband and I are already discussing a return trip! Such a gem; we feel blessed to have been able to stay and experience Arenal from here!

Truly a pie in the sky!

  • 5 of 5

Not much I can add to what all other other reviewers have said. Few tips:

1. If you are arriving at night and if its raining, it could be a challenge to find the place. Its the little entrance right after Howlers Bar and Grill and just before Majestic lodge.

2. Once you make it up to the house, there are three units. Check with Nancy which unit you are checking into as it could be difficult to tell if its raining. Take a flash light.

3. The laundry is right under the pool and you use the key marked with a yellow dot to open the laundry.

4. The last 8 kms to get to this place is unpaved and again if you are arriving at night ,be prepared to drive in total darkness for the last 20 minutes or so.

But then, these are precisely the things which made our stay exciting!

One of the coolest places in the world I have been to!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in Pie in the Sky 2. Amazing territorial view of the Arenal Volcano and lake. We had fantastic weather too. Just breathtaking!

Pie in the sky 2 is the 2 bedroom with bathroom in each bedroom. The main room is a great room with a full kitchen, dining area and TV area. The TV and Wi-Fi were sporadic and Nancy said they are working on improving it but that is not why you should come here. (We where here during the US election night and didn't know the results until the next day) The beds were good and each room has a side door for privacy.

The grounds were lovely and landscaped beautifully! The driveway is very steep and 4 wheel drive or All wheel drive is a must. Access is a dirt road (approx. 8 kilometers)

We filled our days with Zip Lining, Mystico hanging bridges, at lunch at a German Bakery in Nuevo Arenal, went a public hot springs and bought groceries in La Fortuna. We swam in the pool and had cocktails while enjoyed the breathtaking views!!

Nancy and Dan were great to work with too! Kudos to you for having an amazing place you are willing to share! Pie in the Sky is 3 units, a one bedroom/bath, a two bedroom/bath and house that all share the common area, a pool and covered patio and, BBQ & larger patio area (covered)

Again, this place was so cool to come to! The pictures make it look too good to be true but you will be blown away to see it in person! If we come back to Costa Rica, we will come back to Pie in the Sky again!

Could Not Ask For More

  • 5 of 5

My family of 5, with 3 teenage boys stayed in Pie in the Sky 2 for 10 days. It was nothing short of phenomenal. Nancy was great from the very start as I tried to manage dates to match availability for the first part of our trip in Punta Uva all the way through our departure. We had a great time chatting with Dan and Walter at Howlers too. This house is very well done and supported with great service. The view of the Arenal Volcano and lake simply can't be beat. Our trip was focused on activities rather than wildlife and this property offered access to everything we wanted and Nancy was super helpful it making it all happen. Yes there are Spas and Resort options in La Fortuna, but for us...the view and the pool made this a no brainer. Having Sky Trek just down the road for multiple adventures like Zip lining was almost too convenient. It is a 40 minute drive in to La Fortuna, but the road really is not that bad if you have the right vehicle...more than the 4x4, its the suspension and clearance you need. The Toyota Landcruiser we rented was perfect. The road was not a problem. The highlights for us we taking Nancy's suggestion and rafting with Aguas Bravas on the Sarapiqi River. We also loved the water slides at Kolumba, opposite the Baldi resort. We found the local grocery store in El Castillo enough for most things, and hit the super mercado at the edge of La Fortuna to primarily cook our own meals, so we don't have alot to say about local restaurants. I fully concur with the rest of the 5 star reveiews on here. This is a special property managed by special people.
