Hideaway: Private, Secluded Retreat On Pristine Wasson Lake

Bedrooms 3
Space 1,600 sq. ft.
Property type cabin
Minimum Stay 3 nights

About the property

3+ BR, 3 Baths, Sleeps 8, Spacious, Refurbished, On a Private Lake

Refurbished year-round lake home with knotty pine interior on 25 acres of Minnesota woodland, 600 feet of lake frontage with 100 feet of solid sand bottom at the dock area. Perfect for couples, honeymooners, or families on vacation.

Spacious main level with 3 bedrooms, 2 baths, large kitchen/living area with wood-burning stove, and screened porch with table/chairs for outdoor dining; on lower-level, 1 additional bath and large rec room/bedroom that opens on to outdoor patio; rec room includes satellite TV and Internet access (e-mail or text only; no streaming video).

Central heating, dishwasher, and washer/dryer. Bedrooms: 1 with king bed, 1 with 2 twin beds, 1 with a double bed, 1 pullout queen sofa in lower level.

Private dock and screened gazebo; fish cleaning table, life jackets, 14' Lund fishing boat, Honda 9HP motor, 1 tank of gas, and Grumman 17' Standard Aluminum canoe provided. There is no public access to Wasson Lake; guests may NOT launch their own boats or other water craft.

Fishing: Wasson Lake is approximately 500-acres in size and spring fed. It has 17 feet of clarity with a maximum depth of 67 feet. With 4 islands and numerous bays, boggy shore areas, and submerged trees, it provides an idea fish habitat. The lake has northern pike, large- and small mouth bass, crappies, and recently a few Walleyes have been taken from the lake; however, they are not native to the lake. We have always used lures, minnows, or worms as bait. The near-by Scenic Pines Store sells bait and can give you specific advice.

Hunting: We are not hunters ourselves so I can only tell you what our cabin neighbors have told us. In season, you'll find White Tail Deer and we've been told that the Grouse hunting is good. Although we are located in the George Washington State Forest, we do not allow hunting on our land and most of the lake owners do not as well--it's just too populated. However, there is ample public land in the state forest as well as nearby county and federal forests.

Here are some links to additional hunting/fishing information in Itasca County.

Minnesota is strict about moving boats from one body of water to another as a way of preventing invasion of damaging species. So far Wasson Lake is free of any such species!

**NOTE: All bedding (sheets, blankets, pillows) is provided; however, guests must bring their own kitchen and bath towels, other personal items, and fishing gear. Guests provide their own meals.

Much of the forest around Wasson Lake is second and third growth and is currently dying. Thus, in 2013, we began an overdue project of forest stewardship by selectively harvesting overgrown poplars and aspen, and planting over 4500 new red pine, white pine and hardwood seedlings. Within a very short time, we will see a beautiful new forest begin to emerge. This summer we spotted Red Pine that are now almost 3 feet tall. The forest is coming!

About Jessika & Casey, Local Managers

We are retired university professors with deep connections to the beauty of northern Minnesota. When we moved to Rochester, NY from Minneapolis (in 1989), we kept this cabin because we knew we could never replace it with anything better. We build the original cabin in 1977, remodeled it extensively around 2008, added new appliances around 2013, and have tried to make it an enjoyable place to relax, commune with nature, and restore our "souls."

Our local managers are Casey and Jessika, who will be available for your questions and needs during your stay at The Hideaway.

Jessika & Casey, Local Managers purchased this cabin in 1975

Why Jessika & Casey, Local Managers chose Minnesota

25 acres of private woodlands on a beautiful lake with no public access. Heaven in the woods!

What makes this cabin unique

Private, secluded, quiet, beautiful, relaxing, comfortable, just enough connection with the noisy world! Fully equipped for gourmet cooking and dining, comfortable sleeping, and relaxing days at our lakefront.

Fantastic 50th Birthday Weekend

  • 5 of 5

I brought in my 50th birthday at the Hideway and couldn't have asked for a better place to do so. In the first 10 minutes of arrival a Eagle swooped in and landed on a nearby tree and we continued to see Eagles/Loons and other birds all weekend. We used the canoe and motor boat which is included with the rental. We cooked breakfast/lunch and dinner each day in the well supplied kitchen which had all cookware needed. The house was spotless and very comfortable. The 3 full bathrooms are wonderful and the bedrooms are very comfortable. We used the grill on Memorial Day. We all enjoyed the peaceful setting and made a few quick trips to Bigfork and Hibbing but the vast majority of time was spent at the cabin, eating, drinking and laughing and spending time by the lake. Thanks for the great bottle of wine left for me for my 50th as well. I will be back and make the Hideway a family tradition. I highly recommend the Hideway for anyone wanting a peaceful, relaxing getaway.

Owner's Response: Dear Tim: A BIG thank you to you and your fellow birthday celebrants for such a nice review. So very glad you enjoyed our place. Last July, we were also treated to low flying eagles and it is a wonder to watch them. We joked that the baby eaglets were conducting flying practice. Also want to thank you for the comments about the kitchen. I've tried to equip it such that anyone who enjoys cooking will find most everything he/she needs. During our stays, we've done homemade pizza in the oven and on the grill, roasted porchetta from the Four Seasons Market in Coleraine, made my own pasta sauce, done pulled pork, baked enchiladas, and on and on. Seems like we always have a crowd of family and friends to feed. Finally, I must give credit to Jess & Casey, our local managers. They are the ones who open it for us in the spring and do all the cleaning and maintenance. Wonderful young couple!! Do hope to "see" you next year--and you're always welcome sooner if your schedule permits. Best regards, Mary Boyd, Owner

Loved It

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the hideaway. The cabin was beautiful and had everything we needed. One of the main reasons we picked this property was that the cabin also included the use of a boat and motor. We spent most of our time on the water fishing with great results. We really lucked out , the fall colors were spectacular and the weather was perfect. We would highly recommend a stay at the hideaway and we plan to do the same again next year.

Owner's Response: Dear John: So glad you enjoyed your stay at our place, the Hideaway on Wasson Lake. Since we no longer live in Minnesota we are unable to enjoy the beauty and quiet of September and the fall season but very glad you were able to. During our summer stay, we always get out in the fishing boat, taking a cruise around the lake to see what's happening: baby loons, the young eaglets, a deer or two along the shore line, and sometimes a few beaver. Hopefully you were able to enjoy the canoe, which lets you go places on the lake where the fishing boat cannot go. Thank you for your positive review--but most of all we're glad you had a good visit to the Hideaway. Hope you make it next year. Mary Boyd, Owner

Quiet, spacious retreat

  • 5 of 5

My significant other and I had a lovely time at the Hideaway. We arrived late on Labor Day so the lake was quiet that evening and throughout the week. We took the boat out on the lake most days to fish and enjoy the sunsets. We enjoyed cooking and grilling every night. Be sure to bring charcoal and lighter fluid with you! The local Scenic Pines Store does have charcoal and a few other essentials if you forget anything and don't feel like driving too far. We made campfires most nights, too. The house is spacious but still cozy. We used the kitchen table for doing puzzles and the table on the screen porch for meals. We had family visit for a night and the kids loved having their own twin beds. The amount of land was astonishing to me as a city dweller. My dogs were in heaven.

We brought our bikes and were able to do some bike riding. I was limited with my cruiser bike on the gravel roads around Wasson Lake but my significant other had a lot of fun with his mountain bike. We also biked once to the Scenic Pines Bar & Grill, which is next door to the store. I had the advantage in that bike ride!

We also enjoyed going to Scenic State Park just about 20 minutes away and hiking the beautiful and unique Chase Point Trail. There is much more to do at the park, including a beach, free loaner fishing poles, and kayak/paddle board rentals. We went on from the state park to Bigfork and had a delicious pizza delivered across the parking lot to the local bar. The bartender there makes a very good Moscow Mule. The grocery store in Bigfork is a decent size and has anything you'd need to restock or supplement what you bring up with you. We were very happy that we brought groceries and alcohol with us and then just got a few things mid-week at the store in Bigfork.

It was a nice experience and we highly recommend this property to folks who want some quiet time in nature with modern conveniences.

Owner's Response: Thank you for taking the time to review your stay at the Hideaway. We are delighted that you had an enjoyable, relaxing time. September--and October--can be a simply gorgeous time in northern Minnesota and you were able to experience it. We bike when we spend time there and plan to utilize the Mesabi Trail next year. It starts in Grand Rapids and goes to Ely. Your comments about bringing groceries, beverages, and charcoal makes me think I need to make it clearer in the web site that the Hideaway is a housekeeping cabin, thus guests will need to bring those items. Thank you for your comments.

The Hideaway is a very nice vacation home

  • 4 of 5

You have a beautiful home and property!! It was fun watching the hummingbirds daily. We fished and canoed everyday and caught some fish! 3 big bass , one small mouth and 2 large mouth. 2 small northern a and some bluegills!! We saw 3 otters playing along the shore lines and the Eagles and their babies flying around everyday!

The screen room at the house and down by the lake were very nice as well. We were so busy having fun that we realized on our last day that we never even turned on the TV! Also had campfires every night!

It was a very nice vacation at a really nice home!

Owner's Response: Dear Debra: We are delighted that you enjoyed your stay at the Hideaway. We make every effort to provide a place that others will enjoy as much as we do. It sounds as if you enjoyed the very amenities we enjoy. Weather permitting, we eat most of our meals on the screen porch--or at the gazebo--and spend hours at the lake shore watching the wildlife, reading, and taking photographs. When we were there in July, we watched the young eaglets begin their flying lessons. One even flew directly over the cabin not more than 25 feet above us. Happened too quickly to get a photo, however. We don't do much fishing any more but other guests and folks around the lake comment on the quality of the fishing so it must be okay! Thank you for being our guest and please keep us in mind for your 2017 north woods get-away! Mary & Don Boyd, Owners

Not a good week!

  • 2 of 5

Arrived at the Hideaway on Saturday, August 6th. Knew things were not going to be good when I saw a mouse trap. Along the refrigerator there were four drawers holding silverware and one’s empty. In each drawer found mouse droppings. Immediately sent a text to the property manager asking if what I was seeing was in fact mouse droppings and if they have had issues with mice. I received a call back indicating that yes, the owners of the house had been staying at the house the last week and had caught two mice. She then told me that they had had issues with mice in the past but thought they had the problem fixed. We found mouse dropping throughout the kitchen and some downstairs. The Manager was very apologetic and acted like she wanted to make sure we were happy as they did not want a bad review listed on their property. I had told her that we would need to wash every kitchen item for fear that mice had been crawling around on them. In total, we caught 6 mice being there from Saturday – Friday. We ended up leaving Friday fed up with it all. Not my idea of a vacation when you have to store all your food items in either the microwave or oven for fear of mice getting in your food. And washing dishes by hand and storing in the dishwasher instead of cabinets.

The most frustrating part is the way this has been handled. I have sent several messages to the property manager hearing back a couple of times that they were conversing with the owners. Sent another message Sunday and Monday. The response back was she had sent another email right then and if she didn’t hear back, she would provide me their email address. Today is Wednesday and still no response. I can understand that when you are staying at a cabin you may have a mouse once in a while but 7 in one week (was told another one caught Friday night). I guess if I was renting out my property for the cost they charge and I was notified that there were mice in the house (especially when I knew about the mice as I had caught two the week prior) that I would have had an exterminator out there immediately. Plus when we arrived, there was no mention of any mice being caught and the possibility of the chance there could be more around. If I would not have questioned, we would have been eating off the dishes and using the silverware where mice could have been running and with the possibility of getting very sick from mice droppings.

The cabin itself is very nice. But our week was a nightmare.

Owner's Response: Dear Janelle O.: I am extremely sorry that your stay at the Hideaway did not meet your expectations. We make every effort to ensure that our cabin is clean, well-provisioned, and critter-free. In the 25+ years we have been renting our cabin to guests--first under the management of a local resort and most recently through VRBO--yours is the very first complaint we have had about mice. Because the Hideaway is a cabin in the north woods, we inspect it each season for possible places where mice could enter, sealing any openings. This is not an exact science and, yes, we have had a few mice from time to time. We do not use professional exterminators because they use chemicals or sprays that could harm pets or children. The secret to avoiding mice is to keep them out--if we use chemicals or sprays, there is the high likelihood that the mice will die in the cabin walls and that is not desirable. Again, our deepest regrets that your stay at the Hideaway did not meet your expectations. Mary Boyd, Owner
