About Margaret Sheppard

Jim & I now live in Cubieres sur Cinoble all the year round. We live in la petite maison , which is attached to the Gite,. We love to share our special place in Cubieres. In spring we enjoy all the spring flowers & preparing our garden before the summer arrives & we want to be swimming & enjoying our many visitors; The gorge du Galamus is just 10 minutes away & is just extraordinary, as is the countryside around. Jim is Irish, but lived in the UK for many years. I am originally from Shropshire, Nr Ludlow & we have both semi - retired to this SW region of France.

Margaret Sheppard purchased this house in 2005

Why Margaret Sheppard chose Cubières-sur-Cinoble

Our stone long house is the only house on the Rue des Lavandieres. We looked for several summers in the area until we found a house to enjoy ourselves & with enough space to run as a Gite. The village is small, but friendly with wonderful Fetes in summer , La poste, Mairie, Salle d'fete, a Buvette, & snack bar. It has a wonderful church that is slowly being restored. the whole village was an abbey, centuries ago; Several vans deliver bread & other provisions each week.

We have an amazing view of the Pic du Bugarach, which became quite famous when the end of the world was predicted by the Mayan calendar!! It is a wonderful walk , either from the Linas or other routes. I think the beauty of this area is you have so many contrasts, Alpine, Mediterreanean, Cathar country, small villages & towns & of course food & wine, which the French do so well.

What makes this house unique

This area has a perfect climate, hot sunny days, & cooler evenings, perfect for sleeping, because we are 450 metres high. The garden has a small stream running through, lovely for children to paddle or fish. A lawn to play on or relax under the shade of a tree in the hammock. The patio for BBQs & sharing food & eating outside. The lane passing by the house gives the chance to see horses, walkers, & at harvest time a tractor passing.

In spring orchids, & wild flowers abound, in summer to Rosemary, thyme & other plants fill the air,While the swallows & Martins swoop & skim the air. Eagles can be seen soaring above. In Autumn the colours of the trees are magical, sunsets & sunrises beautiful & the days slowly shortening & in the evenings a small log fire. Winter can be glorious & views change as the leaves vanishes & the outline of the hills & new views show; Maybe a little snow & life is slower & tranquil.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Great week for walking, wild flowers, birdsong & wine.

Thanks very much - really enjoyed it.

Beautiful area - cannot wait to return.

Get away from it all

  • 5 of 5

This is in a really interesting part of France and the scenery is stunning. We have visited several times and always have a sense of getting away from it all. It's a great area for walking (when not too hot) or just chilling, but there are plenty of other things to do as well.

The house is a traditional stone building with

loads of character. Marg and Jim are very hospitable and welcoming and have a lot of local knowledge.

Owner's Response: Always good to see our guests have enjoyed their stay. This area really does have something for everyone. Gorges, natural pools for swimming in, mountains, history of the Cathars. A great place to chill & relax or be energetic & visit the many touristic places; The house is cool as the stone walls keep it at a good temperature even when hot outside. Garden has shadey areas & stream running through, & a relax in the hammock of lounger is lovely. We love sharing this special place with our guests.

Perfect place to chill an discover the region

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed very much our stay at Margret´s and Jim´s house. The house is old but nice an clean. The garden with the small stream at the garden´s edge is a perfect place to chill. The small village is located very close to a famous canyon and not far away from two interesting castles. Marg and Jim are very helpful and live just next to the house. This summer we have spent already our second vacation in Cubiere and it won´t be the last!

July 2008

  • 5 of 5

A beautiful traditional french gite with welcoming but discreet English neighbours where we thoroughly enjoyed our two weeks with Marg, Jim and Lobo. On the first night we were invited to a local party with the villagers which helped our french no end.

The gite is spotlessly clean comfortable and with lots of character.

Lots to see and do in the area with the piece de resistence an evening visit to Carcassone for the 14th July celebrations. The Cite, surrounded by hills made a great view for the fantastic firework display. A long way to go but well worth the experience. Our advice, takea picnic and get there early.

In the local area the Cathar castles made interesting excursions as did the famous village of Rennes le Chateau with its interesting Holy Grail history.

We enjoyed walking locally the village markets and swimming both at the pool at Rennes les Bains and also at the gorge near the gite.

Further afield but easily reachable are Perpignan and the Beziers.

A great couple of weeks which we look forward to repeating one day.

Stayed here July 2010 and October 2010.

  • 5 of 5

A lovely stone farmhouse that is clean, light and spacious. Absolutely beautiful location with stunning views particularly that of the magical Bugarch Mountain. Both my husband and I have difficulty entertaining our two sons aged 6 and 13 as they are so far apart in age yet both thoroughly enjoyed this family holiday. There are many highlights including swimming in the gorge, exploring the Cathar castles, lots of laughs, wine and barbequing in the garden in the evenings. The kids loved splashing about and fishing in the stream at the end of the garden. Great to see them enjoying playing outdoors.

Incredibly peaceful and tranquil I came back in October 2010 for a weekend break and caught up on some much needed reading for the last year of my degree course – great place to work. Had two evening meals prepared by Marg this time, excellent fresh food (they use lots of vegetables and fruit from their own garden) and great value for money. Marg and Jim are excellent hosts and I would highly recommend this place.

The village of Cubieres sur Cinoble nestles between the Gorge du Galamus the valley of the river Agly) and the famous Pic du Bugarach(the highest point in the Corbieres, 1231m). In the Aude, but bordering the Pyrenees Orientales. Peyrepertuse, Queribus & Puilauren Cathar Castles are close by. Aslo Rennes le Chateau & Rennes les Bains. There are many opportunities for river swimming in beautiful limestones gorges;

Conveniently situated between the Mediterranean & the Pyrenees, the village is 1 hour from Perpignan, a Catalan stronghold. The famous citadel of Carcassonne is 1.5 hours away. The area is well known for its wines, around Maury and all over the area are many Caves for sampling & buying wine. The region has a wide range of produce and cuisines. Catalan tapas, Cassoulette, salads , fruits, honey and plentiful vegetables & cheeses.

The area abounds with foot paths and wonderful limestones gorges and plateaus full of thymes, rosemary, orchids and many seasonal plants. Forests are all around and rock pools are a pleasant way to cool off in the heat of summer.

The Gorge du Galamus is one of the wonders of the world. Canyoning, pools for swimming or visiting the Ermitage St Antione? something for everyone.
