About Nanette Burns
Shelter Island regulars for nearly 25 years, we love its natural beauty and "un-Hampton" qualities. As residents of Greenwich Village, NYC, we are lucky for the opportunity to unwind on the island but also have loved raising a family in the city. Our interests are in the arts, history, world affairs, and simple things like a good meal cooked at home, watching our son play baseball, and visiting with friends.

Why Nanette Burns chose Shelter Island
This is Shelter Island -- a wonderful mix of rural and beach living -- a year-round quiet, elegant alternative to the Hamptons. Like much of the island, this property has a rich history. It sits on a former lima bean farm and was formerly owned by the Behringer family. Louis Behringer in the early 1900s operated the hotel that is now called Shelter Island House on Stearns Point Road, a few minutes' walk from our house, and what is now called Crescent Beach was known as Louis' Beach. The house is sparkling, like new; we only use it to maintain it, and it is filled with light. The top floor bedrooms, each with their own terraces, give the sensation of being in a tree house, with luscious trees surrounding the house offering cool breezes. The location is key -- not a suburban track, but woods; across the street is a dedicated preserve in back of the houses there. So you really feel the natural beauty of the island here.
What makes this House unique
When we built the house, we chose a design that offered many windows, to take advantage of the light you get at all times of the day on this property, during all four seasons, and to offer a sort of breezeway in the living room when the windows are open. Everything about the house is about the outdoors -- whether enjoying it through the windows or from the many terraces. Watch the sunset and sunrise from different vantage points. The clean lines, blonde wood floors, stainless steel appliances, and brushed steel fixtures are all part of this modernist package. Sitting out on the patio sipping coffee at breakfast, or wine at dinner, is sublime, with so many species of birds singing; a flash of color from a cardinal.

Blown away, absolutely perfect house for my family
As stunning a home as the pictures suggest. My wife, my architecture obsessed daughter, and always up early son all loved the place. Shelter is our annual summer getaway, and we have stayed all over the island but this is the home we hope to stay at again next year ( shhh...)
Year-round restuarants (Shelter Island House/The Tavern) walking distance. In summer, free concerts at the Perlman Music Program along nearby Crescent Beach, where there are seasonal restaurants such as Sunset Beach and the Pridwin. A quick 3 mile drive away is Mashomack Preserve with wonderful hikes and wildlife watching. Landmarks like Sylvester Manor (1700s) are part of Shelter Island's historical legacy.
