About the property

Two level, 4 bedroom beach house, on 1/2 acre lot with private pool

Villa Dos Gatos (House of Two Cats) is fronted by a large teak balcony featuring two hammocks + 4 person dining table - this is the signature location of the house with a spectacular view of the Pacific Ocean. The main living area of the house is located on the upper level; at this level the ocean-view presents itself from all points in the open-concept kitchen, dining and living room areas. Vaulted ceilings, teak beams and numerous windows enhance this area with abundant light and air. The kitchen is well equipped with coffee maker, toaster, pots & pans, cutlery, dishes, glasses, blender, electric stove and fridge. For indoor dining a lunch bar separates the kitchen and living room - there are 6 bar-height, teak chairs. Behind the house is the private pool and rancho with propane and charcoal bar-b-ques; a bar in the rancho offers an outside dining option near the pool.

The yard features a huge mango tree, almond tree, numerous palms and other tropical plants.

Beach, Ocean and Weather are the main attractions at Isla Palo Seco; they are spectacular! Isla Palo Seco is a barrier island, essentially a sand spit, that extends 8 km in length. The sand beach extends the entire length of the Island on the ocean-facing side; approximately 8 km of palm-lined, pristine beach. The ocean water is warm, surprisingly warm. Waves are constant; they are a surfer/boogie boarder's dream. At Dos Gatos we have 3 surf boards (2 long boards and 1 short board) and 4 boogie boards for our guests to use. At high or low tide the beach is breathtaking but if you want to walk the beach low tide is best. At low tide the ocean recedes to uncover a flat, sand strip that extends for more than half of the 100 or so metres between the water and the beach grass and palms. This flat sand is firm and a pleasure to walk. The beach is never crowded with people. Except for weekends and holidays when Tico (Costa Rican) families gather at the beach, it is almost deserted. I once walked the entire length of the Island and encountered only 3 people! The estero located on the back side of the island is extensive and it known for its fishing and sight seeing.

The weather between December 1 and May 1 (summer) is predictable; except for the occasional rainfall in the evening or night - average daytime high temp is 33 c under clear skies and average nighttime lows are 21 c. Even in the green season there is sun on most days from early morning to early afternoon when the clouds roll in with late afternoon showers - the average temps vary only slightly.

There are several very good restaurants on the beach: 'Mar Y Sol' is a restaurant/bar with relaxed atmosphere and good food, 'Beso Del Viento' offers French quesine by reservation, 'Hotel La Isla' has an extensive menu and the newest resort on the Island 'Clandestino Resort' and "Coco Mar" (newest restaurant on the beach) offer more upscale dining at reasonable prices.

About Peter Downing

We are a Brady Bunch type family - we have 6 adult children between us and 10 grandchildren - this is our family vacation home! The house was designed to accommodate large groups - if the group is larger than this house can accommodate there are nearby over-flow options.

Peter Downing purchased this house in 2012

Why Peter Downing chose Costa Rica

We were initially attracted to the tropics by the beaches, palm trees and warm breezes. We chose Costa Rica for our vacation home because of its stable government and relative safety - we were attracted to La Isla Palo Seco in particular because of the pristine quiet beach. This is not the place to go for the night life - but if you are looking for a tropical paradise this fits the bill - the house is big enough for family vacations or groups who wish to vacation together with private pool and an essentially private beach! Sunset watching is very popular here - sunsets are different every day and they can be quite spectacular. As you end your day on the balcony (perhaps with a favorite beverage) you will be serenaded by the sounds of the ocean, the breeze in the palms and the cheeping of the geckos - enjoy.

Beautiful house with ocean views, monkeys in the yard and iguanas everywhere. Friendly locals and good food close by. Boogie boarding right out front. Peter was very responsive to every request. Great location inbetween everywhere we wanted to visit.

Nice and quiet family property on a beautiful spot!

  • 5 of 5

We were 2 families with 5 kids between 9 and 13, and we all loved the week we spent there in July 2018. The house is spacious and the air conditioning works very well in each room. The kitchen and living room get a bit hot since there is no clim, but the fans help controlling the temperature. The exterior is amazing! Beautiful and large pool, which the kids appreciated a lot. Nice outdoor porch with BBQ. There is a lot of fruit trees in the courtyard, including a mango tree, which provides very good mangos daily, if you can catch them before the iguanas! The view from the 1st level veranda is awesome, on the sea, which is just on the other side of a small road. We crossed it barefoot. And the beach is wonderful. The sand is very soft, the water is warm and we saw almost nobody during the entire week. It was very peacefull. The house is isolated and retired from the Parrita small town, which is not touristic. But be careful with rip tide, the current is very strong, especially at high tide. The few issues we had were addressed rapidly by Woody. The only thing that was not settelled during our stay the water pressure upstairs, but Peter undertook to settle it soon. Our other recommendation to Peter was to add a table and chairs outside, near the BBQ porch, on the ground floor. To conclude, I can say that over a 24 days vacation in Costa Rica, and on the 6 places we rented, Peter's house was the favorite of the kids, and I think of the adults as well. And it was definitely not the most expansive! Thanks to share your house Peter! I hope we come back one day!

Owner's Response: Thanks Sophie - the water pressure upstairs is an issue that I thought was rectified when we installed a new and larger pump and tank to service the house water system (April 2018) - apparently it is not 0 yet - I will address that when I am there in August - I am not sure if you meant "not the most expansive" or "expensive" but either way we are glad that you enjoyed your stay and we would welcome you back any time - Peter

Just returned from Paradise!

  • 5 of 5

We recently spent 8 nights at Villa Dos Gatos in Parrita! The house was super accomodating for my husband and I and our 5 kiddos. The pool and beach were lovely to have within such close proximity as to not have to pack up and go somewhere everytime someone wanted to swim in one or the other. The house offered all the necessities...even down to tweezers we needed to remove a splinter. Our kids enjoyed playing with different toys for a change so those were definitely a surprise! There were also sand toys under the stairs that were also appreciated! The bedrooms were a cool retreat at bedtime!! Nothing negative at all to say...just a few things to be aware of....pick up everything you'll need if you plan to cook (salt and pepper included) and the house has a washing machine but not a dryer. Reyes was a delight! Always prompt to show up and super helpful with anything we needed. Safety was never an issue here. We would definitely return to Villa Dos Gatos!!

One week of Island Paradise

  • 5 of 5

Outstanding ocean views from the second floor porch and the sound of the waves is intoxicating. This is a lovely home with all amenities for cooking. The home is conveniently located about a 10 or 15 minute drive from the main highway so day trips are easily managed. Our group enjoyed the boogie boards in the ocean and walking the beach daily. We enjoyed a guided tour through Manuel Antonio National Park where we saw many sloths, monkeys, iguanas and a toucan! Pool time was welcome on 'home' days. This is a fabulous property. I would encourage those seeking a true Costa Rican experience to consider this property.

Better than we expected!

  • 5 of 5

We did a thorough review of all the options in VRBO for our Costa Rica stay. Somehow I feel like we picked the perfect place especially because we saw several of the other options while there and they just didn't seem to compare! We had fours adults (ages 40s to 70s) and two kids 8/15.

Fully equipped home with everything you need to cook and entertain inside/outside. Great internet (upstairs has best signal). Nice pool with large shade.

Amazing access to a beautifully clean beach. Wildlife nearby, we saw Capuchin monkeys in the lot next door, multiple iguanas (or some lizard of that family), Halloween crabs happen to be migrating through the yard, all kinds of birds and even the nice local dog or two would stop by for a visit. The wildlife (including dogs) never disrupted us, mostly stayed at a comfortable distance and was very entertaining to watch.

Locals walk by all day, some are even collecting coconuts from trees which is enthralling to see. Most are very nice and try to say hello, tend to keep to themselves. We felt very safe and never had any real concerns for theft as we used the gate and locks regularly. At night the very nice guard, Reyes, stayed on the front porch to ensure our safety (typically from 6pm to 4am). We interacted with him regularly, he even took my father-in-law to his favorite fishing spot. I made sure to let him know we appreciated his presence and offered him water and on occasion a meal. He was very gracious and accommodating to our questions and needs, even though his english is limited.

The main piece of advice is about the water pressure. It took a day or so to realize that when the water sprinklers outside were running the pressure inside was very low (kitchen and showers). I asked Reyes to stop running the sprinklers until after we went to bed, then we would all take a cool shower prior to sleeping. Also, the main living area upstairs is not air conditioned, only the bedrooms, we used the fans to kept the air moving and comfortable, it is hot in Costa Rica, which is another reason why we waited until just before bed to cool off with a shower.

Overall, this house (and Reyes) really set a great mood and atmosphere for our 8 day stay! The owners communicate continuously and offer great advice, listen and use it!

Owner's Response: Thank you for this very kind review - I am going to be at the house shortly and I am going to change the times that the sprinklers operate to times when occupants might be expected to be asleep - apparently the pump cannot operate the sprinklers and provide adequate water pressure to the upstairs at the same time - our current occupants have had similar water pressure issues -- Peter

Excellent, Affordable Beach Home For A Group

  • 5 of 5

We were a group of 7 Americans (USA) who stayed here for a week, and loved every minute of it. This is a very nice house, and so close to the beach. Peter does a fantastic job prepping you for the stay, including directions, things to see near and far, and especially the recommendation of Mar y Sol, the little beach bar and grill down the road. Yours truly and some other members of our intrepid group spent an inordinate amount of time down there, chatting up Pablo and slaking our thirst

Some of us had been zip-lining a few times previously, but they all agreed that Pablo's canopy tour was the best they had been on. And very close by as well.

If there was anything negative to say about the house or property, your faithful reviewer would not conceal it from you. It is comfortable, has a well equipped kitchen for meal preparation, 2 martini glasses, excellent pool, gas grill, even had a refrigerator upstairs and downstairs! You should strongly consider Villa Dos Gatos if you want to visit Costa Rica.
