Our home is in a gated community 2 minutes from the beach.
You are looking at the number one property in all of Jaco / Playa Hermosa. There is not a house or condo with more bookings. Here's why:
1) I own and manage all four of our homes. With no broker fees or commissions to pay you get a great house for 40% less than you would elsewhere.
2) I have a staff of 6 dedicated 100% to these four properties. Everything is maintained perfectly. Daily housekeeping is included.
3) The number listed here is my personal cellphone. When you need something I and Maricela are here to help regardless of what the need is.
Here is a tip when searching for a place to stay in Costa Rica or anywhere else. In the HomeAway/VRBO search area at the top of the page first check off 'INSTANT BOOKING'. Owners will only have this enabled if they keep their calendar up to date and are really serious about getting rentals. Second, click 'MORE FILTERS' and then select 'OWNERS' under Managed By. This will keep you from getting involved with a management company that uses one listing that looks great to switch you to another. Lastly, set the number of BEDROOMS you want rather than just the number of people. Some owners seem to think you can put 6 people in a bedroom. I book homes for our family on HomeAway regularly and this search has gotten me great results time and time again.
Read our reviews. Not only do we have the best homes in Costa Rica, we have the best employees. They love what they do and they will do everything in there power to insure you have an awesome vacation.
If Casa Espana is booked for your dates check out our other properties, Casa Overlook, The Penthouse and Casa Zocalo on RentRica.com. RentRica is a HomeAway Premier Partner. We book exclusively on HomeAway/VRBO.
Although I think our homes are the best there is to offer, I also believe it is the level of service we provide that separates us from the others. Many of the properties you see listed are managed by brokers or agents. If you book with us you will be interacting with just Katherine, Maricela and myself. And we are available to you for anything at any time. We will help you book your tours, rent your car, get you directions to the house or anywhere else.
If the dates you need are only partially available, contact me. I may be able to put you in one house for part of your stay and the other for the rest.
Casa Espana, is 4 minutes and 25 seconds from the beach, 9 minutes from downtown Jaco and 1 hour, fifteen minutes from the San Jose (SJO) airport. It is in a small quiet, gated community called Opera Salvaje in Playa Hermosa. The house is secluded, has it's own gate, a large pool and is equipped like a luxury home in the US would be.
There are two buildings. The main house has 4 bedrooms on 3 levels with 4 full bathrooms. The guesthouse has 2 bedrooms and one bathroom. One of the bedrooms is actually 2 rooms. The pool is beautiful and big. There is a jacuzzi, pool bathroom, and a big yard. This is the perfect place for that family gathering you have been dreaming about.
The house is spacious, with a large open living, kitchen dining area, a banquet table for 12, and a second table for 4. There is an indoor waterfall, high-speed wireless Internet throughout, cable TV, Netflix and ice cold AC throughout the entire property. You will have all the amenities of home while living in the jungles of Central America.
The kitchen is very well equipped. There is a real espresso machine, dishwasher, gas stove and oven, a large island and plenty of room to cook up a storm. We have installed 5 stage reverse osmosis water filter systems for drinking water in all four of our properties. You won't find better tasting, safer water anywhere.
I bought the absolute best mattresses and pillows. We brought high thread count sheets from the US. Nothing ruins a great vacation faster than a bad nights sleep. No expense has been spared anywhere on either of these homes. My accountant can attest to that :)
Here are how the bedrooms are laid out:
1 King Bed - Bedroom 1 - 1st Floor (down one level from the main floor) Private Bath

Getting Here: We are a 75-minute drive from the San Jose airport. DO NOT fly into Limon. Many times people make that mistake. Limon is on the North East Coast. All the cool stuff (well most of it) is on the Pacific side. You do not want to go to Limon. You can rent a car from Vamos in San Jose and drive yourself. It is highway all the way. I will give you coordinates to the house and you can get here with Google maps. I'll even show you how to download the maps in advance so you don't use data along the way. If you aren't comfortable driving here we can arrange a transport for you. Once you are in Jaco we can help you get a rental car.
Do I need a car? There is so much to see and do in every direction you are going to want to have vehicles. Yes, there are plenty of cabs and sure, we can arrange transportation to anything but I think you will love driving around here. We drive on the same side of the road as you do and it is easy to find your way around. Drivers are courteous and the roads are relatively safe and mostly paved.
Money: The local currency is colones. There are 560 colones to a US dollar. You don't need colones. You can use dollars everywhere. If you want colones the cheapest way to get them is out of the ATM. Don't go to any of the currency exchange booths. And don't buy colones from your bank in the US. You will get charged 10% or more with either of those. Cash is king in Costa Rica. Restaurants will take credit cards (usually) but Taxi rides, massages, and many other small purchases must be made in cash. If the power goes out no one can take credit cards. So keep some cash reserves.
Language: About half the people in Jaco speak English. Every restaurant, store and tour operator has English speaking employees. Costa Ricans are extremely friendly. They will help you with your Spanish. Maybe a cram course on Duoling.com before you go will help :)
Communication: You can call me at any time. My personal cell phone is listed here with HomeAway. If you are coming to Costa Rica it is best to create a WhatsApp account. This is how most of Central America, Mexico, and Europe communicate. It's free. You can talk with Maricela before and during your trip. Message or call her with WhatsApp for everything from a dinner reservation to a masseuse to come to the house. She will make dinner reservations for you, arrange transportation, book your tours and whatever else you need. Think of Maricela as your personal Concierge. Just don't forget to tip her before you leave ;)
Is It Safe? Yes. It is as safe in Costa Rica as it is in the US. There is no place in the world that has zero crime. Use common sense and you will be safe. Don't walk on the beach alone at night, mind your own business, watch out for riptides and don't stand under coconut trees or swim in the Tercoles River with the Crocodiles and you will be just fine.
Is this the right place for you? I picked this area and these homes very carefully. Even if you don't rent from me, this is the area you want to stay in. There are lots of places in Costa Rica that look good on the internet. And most of them are as beautiful as the pictures. But even though Costa Rica is a small country it can take a long time to get from one place to another. I looked at lots of locations. Many of the areas that try to attract your tourism dollars are in the middle of nowhere. Playa Hermosa is perfect. It's minutes from Jaco but away from the chaos. You have dozens of restaurants to choose from, loads of night life, a fancy casino and every activity imaginable a short ride away. There is live music at the Green Room in Jaco every night. And it's all right here on the Pacific ocean. I don't mean to knock the other side of the country but the Caribbean (anywhere) is nothing compared to the Pacific.
If you have any questions about travel to Costa Rica I am happy to answer them.
We host families, friends, and company get togethers. This is a luxury home within a gated community. It's not for bachelor parties. Only the guests registered with us, and the guards at the gate are allowed on the property.
Need help with transportation? No problem. I can help you book round trip transportation with a licensed company in a new, safe vehicle. Just ask.

About Rick Culleton
I am a traveler. I started purchasing large luxury vacation homes in 2013 after realizing how difficult it was to find first class accommodations for our extended family. My goal is to create places that are the backdrop for family vacations that are remembered for life.
Rick Culleton purchased this House in 2017
Why Rick Culleton chose Playa Hermosa
This house was built by renowned builder Kelie Limehouse as her own personal residence. This house is what launched her building career in Costa Rica. Kelie spent a month sitting on the lot studying the sunrise, sunset and wind direction. One of the photos in the listing is her original concept drawing. The house is intriguing from every angle, inside and out. There is an indoor water feature and lots of natural materials. Nearly all of the furnishings are locally made.
What makes this House unique
Convenient seclusion is the best way to describe the location. The house is located a mile and a half from the best beach for many miles in a gated neighborhood named Opera Salvaje in Playa Hermosa.

The perfect place for a larger group seeking to enjoy and explore Costa Rica’s Pacific coast. Tucked in a jungle-like gated and guarded residential community about a mile from quiet and surf focused Playa Hermosa but only a 15 minute drive to the action, dining and shopping of Jaco. Casa de Espana offers everything needed to relax, enjoy and live the Pura Vida, even surfboards!
Rick, your owner, and Maricela and her husband Jonathan, his property managers, get you settled and are immediately responsive to any need or question that might arise during your stay.
Four bedrooms in the main house, plus a separate casita with two more, gives tons of sleeping space plus beneficial separation for kids or families. Kitchen has everything, espresso maker included. Ample high quality linens throughout and washer/dryer when needed.
We plan a return visit and fully recommend as an ideal place for a beach vacation Costa Rica style.
Only one suggestion: the home is fully equipped with multiple “mini-split” a/c units not so common in US or Canada. They work and cool wonderfully but operation and temp control can be different than conventional central units so there is a bit of learning curve to achieve best results. Rick can also fully adjust remotely should help be needed.
Stay here, you will thank me!
A perfect private house
We loved Casa De Espana, Rick and Maricela were accommodating and professional. The Hermosa beach area is wonderful and much nicer than Jaco. Everything they set up for us was perfect and hassle-free. The pool is beautiful and at least a portion of it stays in the shade throughout the day which is very nice. The AC seemed new and kept the place nice and cool. I would definitely recommend Casa De Espana!
Beautiful home in Costa Rica for familes!
Casa Espana is located near Jaco, Costa Rica and is as good as the pictures and the descriptions depict. This house is beautiful. The daily maid service was fantastic and Marciela, the house manager, was incredible. She arranged for our transportation from the San Jose airport, our rental cars were delivered to the house, and she coordinated our activities throughout the week. Our group of 12 included four children who loved the swimming pool and hot tub. The home is located in a 24-hour manned security community with shopping and grocery stores within an easy distance to Jaco. Many family oriented activities are available locally. There are ATV tours, a zip line, the beaches and Manual Antonio National Park is a short 1 ½ hour drive away. Our adult children with their four kids enjoyed the Tarcolis River Tour. Between the beaches and the swimming pool many hours were spent in the water. Rick and Marciela responded to our questions immediately and the entire vacation held no surprises. We felt safe and well taken care of and we would highly recommend this beautiful home for a wonderful family vacation.
I would rate the property it’s self 5 stars!! The home is absolutely gorgeous and it is truly one of a kind!! It accommodated 11 of us comfortably and each bedroom had its own private bath. The wood work is stunning and just the overall character of the home.
Things to consider:
-This property is NOT walking distance. The one beach you can “walk” to is the beach that you are encouraged to avoid because it’s “dangerous”.
- They have 2 home phones, a cell phone, and pocket WiFi. Which all sounds great! NONE of the phones worked. We attempted to order dinner by the use of their home phones and cell phone that were provided but every phone call dropped so we were unable to place a phone call out. we weren’t even able to contact transportation to take us to pickup food. After about 1.5 hours of trying to order Pizza Patta I had to text Maricela using WhatsApp to order the pizza for me (which she did). This was an issue throughout the stay and creates a challenge.
-No bikes as I was informed
- Listing states, cable and Netflix. There is no cable and we could not watch Netflix because the tv shuts off (1 TV in home) every few minutes.
- Bring toilet paper and paper towels. Whatever is in the home upon arrival is like your “welcoming” you are responsible to provide your own during the remainder of the stay.
I did hear from the kind maintenance gentleman, there are plans to get some sort of transportation for guest to use. I think when that takes place, it will make a world of a difference.
I am glad you loved our home. It is an incredible place. I was a bit confused by some of your remarks.
Our home is not advertised to be within walking distance of the beach.
We visited the next guests and tested all three phones, the cable, the television, and Netflix (which they were watching upon our arrival). Everything worked perfectly.
I wish you had mentioned you were having technical difficulties while you were in the home. We would have come to assist.
There are no bikes provided or advertised for this home.
I am sorry it took so long to get Pizza. I wish you had tried some of the local restaurants like the Green Room. There are some great restaurants in the area.
You are correct, we are opening a transportation company in the near future.
Thank you for staying with us. I hope you enjoyed all that Costa Rica has to offer despite your battle with technology :)
Loved everything. Very comfortable and family friendly.
Beautiful and very comfortable
Very Nice home with all the comforts for a wonderful vacation. Very comfortable beds, full kitchen. Close to town but away from the noise. Pool was the big hit of the trip with all the kids.
Great surfing close by. Fishing, zip lining, ATV rides and much more are very close by.
