This famous district of Rome, is characterized by the Lateran Palace and the Basilica of San Giovanni in Laterano, is a fence of residential streets, often used for the provision of training and cultural events, such as the famous musical concert of May 1.

In the medieval period the Lateran Palace was the seat of the Popes population. While even today the Basilica of San Giovanni in Laterano is the cathedral of the Diocese of Rome and the Papal religion. It 's the oldest basilica in the West and the first of the four papal cathedrals.

The Basilica and the large surrounding area together, including: the Pontifical Lateran Palace, the Palazzo dei Canonici, the Pontifical Roman Major Seminary and the Pontifical Lateran University, having originated in the Italian territory, enjoy all the comforts of the Holy See recognized the which possesses the full relevance

Porta S. John is linked to the Roman traditions, especially on the 'Night of Saint John ', June 23, known as the 'The witches night', which took place in a large outdoor party, once so dear to the Romans .

It was popularly believed that the night of St. John, in fact, the ghosts of Herodias and her daughter Salome, who had beheaded John the Baptist and condemned to wander the world on a broomstick to expiate guilt, summon all the witches on the lawns of the Lateran.

People started from all quarters of the city, by the light of torches and lanterns, and concentrated in San Giovanni in Laterano and to pray to the Holy eating snails in the inns and cabins specially equipped for the party. The snails were a customary dish, because the tradition was 'a lot of snails, lots of horns to the witches.

The San Giovanni is full of shops of all kinds. Shopping is provided by the commercial Via Appia Nuova, the typical market of Via Sannio (small Portaportese) and the imposing building that houses the department store Coin.

Large Apartment, Great View, Near Coliseum

  • 4 of 5

Three couples stayed here for 3 nights. The bedrooms were nice, large and comfortable. The kitchen was very nice and usable. The living room was small but useable. However, we mostly stayed on the Terrace, which was awesome with a great view and a pull down canopy to shade us. We had appetizers and drank a lot of wine on the terrace. There is just about everything within walking distance restaurants, wine stores, cafes, grocery shops, coffee shops and Metro stations. Other than a slightly long walk to the Forum and Coliseum, to get around Rome, the Metro is needed. The washer was not working which was a big disappointment because we were going next on a 11 day cruise. Luisa was great and offered to helped with everything including our cab back to the train station. The only other drawback was the small showers with no holders for soap, etc. We would definitely stay here again. Thanks Luisa.

Great location, Fabulous Owner, Awesome

  • 5 of 5

There are probably plenty of great places to stay in Rome however, whenever traveling anywhere where you are unfamiliar- and when traveling with 4 kids, it really helps having someone do the extra things to make things go smoothly. Luisa made our visit perfect. Assisting with getting transportation to the airport, location of nearest grocery store, train locations, tourist visits, etc. The apartment was clean, centrally located, safe, had air conditioning, great patio to relax and talk about the day's activities, stocked kitchen, etc. Thank you Luisa for making our trip wonderful. IF we ever travel to Rome again, we would definitely want to stay at your apartment.

Great Location - Great View

  • 5 of 5

Conveniently close to the metro A line and a major bus stop (in front of the Basilica), and in a vastly underrated neighborhood of Rome. The home is spacious, clean, and well provisioned. The evenings out on the balcony with the moon rising over St John's were tremendous. The owners are reliable, flexible, and friendly. We had a great vacation due in large part to choosing the right home base.

Perfect

  • 5 of 5

Wonderful apartment & so close to public transport & the main attractions of Rome. There were seven of us for most of our stay & as others have said it was clean & the bedrooms roomy with ceiling fans in three & aircon in the fourth. We used the kitchen to cook a few evening meals but there are several restaurants close by. The only complaint was that the washing machine wasn't working but Luisa did offer to take any washing away to do. Luisa! You are wonderful. Right from when we booked over a year ago you have replied to my emails promptly. You organised airport transfers for three different parties at different times & meet them on arrival. Your apartment is in the perfect position & if I was returning in a group I would definitely book again. Thank you, you made it all so easy.

An excellent location for sightseeing in Rome

  • 5 of 5

Seven members of my family stayed in this apartment for four days at the beginning of June 2014, during a sightseeing trip to Rome. The location of the apartment was ideal for such a trip. The nearest tram stop is a two minute walk away and the nearest Metro station, about five minutes away. The apartment achieves the often conflicting requirements of being relatively quiet yet within easy reach of Rome's attractions. There are four good sized bedrooms, three doubles and a twin and three bathrooms. We spent most of our time when we were in the apartment sitting around the table on the balcony where there is a view of Saint Giovanni in Laterano. The kitchen is well equipped for basic cooking and nearby are several good restaurants and supermarkets. We all found the apartment a much better option than hotel rooms for our visit to Rome.

No review would be complete without a commendation for Luisa, the owner. She was so attentive, responsive and helpful and always easily contactable. Luisa was kind enough to find the availability of alternative accommodation for us on the day of our departure when our flight home was suddenly cancelled. Thank you Luisa for your warm welcome and for your kindness.

Rome is in the Lazio region of central Italy on the Tiber river. The original settlement developed on hills that faced onto a ford beside the Tiber island, the only natural ford of the river in this area. The Rome of the Kings was built on seven hills: the Aventine Hill, the Caelian Hill, the Capitoline Hill, the Esquiline Hill, the Palatine Hill, the Quirinal Hill, and the Viminal Hill. Modern Rome is also crossed by another river the Aniene which joins the Tiber north of the historic centre.

Although the city center is about 24 kilometres (15 mi) inland from the Tyrrhenian Sea, the city territory extends to the shore, where the south-western district of Ostia is located. The altitude of the central part of Rome ranges from 13 metres (43 ft) above sea level (at the base of the Pantheon) to 139 metres (456 ft) above sea level (the peak of Monte Mario).[34] The Commune of Rome covers an overall area of about 1,285 square kilometres (496 sq mi), including many green areas.
