About Shelley and Gavin Phillips

How did we two Aussies end up with a home in France? Let alone in the little known Haute-Marne? It’s a dream really!

Imagine an impossibly sunny Saturday morning in June, with us in our hire car navigating through increasingly smaller, and more isolated roads to find what will soon be our new home.

As towns are left behind and lanes appear, we are quietly getting more and more excited at the approach of our destination. We have been hunting for over two years with little success and many dislocated expectations up to now, so still trying to keep a poker face.

As heartbeats increase, we cross the tiny bridge into the hameau and make a sharp right at the rose-covered stone walls of the manoir that links our property. The small gravel lane passes chickens and ends in a massive tilleul tree amid green, green grass.

Ahead, more green on a hillside bare except for grazing white Charolais cattle and a smattering of prune and walnut trees. Above, it is topped with thick woods.

Poker is forgotten as our eyes now turn to what will be our very own slice of France .. the farmhouse walls are mobbed with roses of blood red and mixed shades of pink. Wisteria tumbles in a purple haze above. A grape vine we later learn is 100 years old climbs up, up and around the stone façade.

We are in love before we even step inside to find décor to dream of .. downstairs with stone floors worn smooth by centuries of feet, light pouring in through windows thrown wide to let in bumble bees and petals, antique yet comfy furniture, soft furnishings of heavy linen, not one but three ensuite bedrooms with satisfyingly modern fittings and more and more .. oh my .. we are in heaven!

We grabbed and hold this beautiful property in our hearts. May you also experience the joy it gives us when you visit!

Bienvenue!

Shelley and Gavin Phillips purchased this farmhouse in 2009

And breathe....

  • 5 of 5

We travelled with 5 adults and 2 x under 2 year olds. Travelling with little ones can be tricky, but all our requests were met, high chairs and children friendly cups and plates were provided. And the house has shutters on the windows = instant black out blinds.

The farmhouse is impeccably styled, we loved the traditional French feel of the interior and exterior of the property.

Do you like to cook? Then this property is for you. A proper 'cooks' kitchen with everything you need to make fantastic meals from your day of market shopping. The house has a BBQ too which is lovely for the warmer months.

We did lots of day trips from the property, but we also liked chatting to the cows each morning and taking little walks down to the river - it's a slow pace of life, which made it a very relaxing holiday.

One of the most brilliant things about this Farmhouse is that each room has an ensuite! This is very unique for a French property and makes it ideal if travelling with friends.

You won't be disappointed if you book this property!

Farmhouse Experience - BOOK NOW!!!

  • 5 of 5

The 18th Century Farmhouse is the perfect property to absolutely slow down and unwind and experience French living at its rural best.

Travelling with our family of 5 Adults and 2 children (under 2years), the house was perfectly set up with all our needs catered for. Beautiful walks, relaxing in the sunshine and incredible fresh produce to eat and drink.

The bedrooms were quiet, dark and beds so comfortable. Bathrooms clean and fresh. Kitchen and dining (my favourite rooms) as we could feast at night in the warmth with delicious food and great company once the little ones had gone to sleep. The decor in the sitting room is so peaceful and cosy, can sit for hours reading a book. The property is surrounded with so much natural beauty, you don't need to venture off on day excursions, but there is plenty to offer in the nearby towns. I looked forward to coming back to the farm house every night.

Amazing Property & Location

  • 5 of 5

We have rented many houses in France and this one is still at the top of the list. In fact we've rented it twice and can't wait to go back. The house is well laid out and each of the bedrooms has an en suite bathroom. Although in a small hamlet, there is a secluded area off to the side for dining outside with views overlooking the neighboring farm (and the occasional cow). If you are looking for an authentic French country experience this is the property for you.

Amazing country side vacation

  • 4 of 5

This is a beautiful house, full of character of love, it is obvious Gavin & Shelley put there heart and soul into the place. thank you for that. the kitchen is well equipped and if anyone loves to combine cooking with the overall relaxation it is a perfect combination. Few minor drawbacks to take into consideration. we found the house to be a bit cold at night, only in the bedrooms, downstairs we enjoyed the lovely fireplace. the other drawback is that only the master bedroom has a proper double bed. nonetheless, amazing property, will defiantly consider coming back again.

Des vacances merveilleux!!

  • 5 of 5

We have just returned from spending two fabulous weeks in Ma Maison de Campagne - our hosts, Gavin and Shelly, have made the house so welcoming - and beautifully clean and presented - with champagne ready and waiting in the fridge! it is superbly appointed in terms of the kitchen and the living room and our nights in front of the fire with roast pork in the oven are memorable indeed. The surrounding countryside is beautiful and our daily walks were a pleasure. Langres is a find - and our walks along the Roman ramparts, while chilly, were fascinating. A spring sojourn would be amazing.

Owner's Response: We are so happy that you had a great time at the farmhouse. We wish we could stay there more often ourselves and it is always really pleasing when people have such lovely feedback and enjoy the house and area as much as we do. We chose the house as our french retreat to enjoy lovely countryside, local wines and specialities and relax in a peaceful environment. We are always so happy when we arrive there for our holidays. We hope that you might be able to return one day to enjoy it all over again.

The Perfect Place in the French Countryside

  • 5 of 5

This is the French countryside at its best! Fresh air, luscious meadows with countless cows and sheep, narrow country roads, lots of chateaus and monasteries – and only a short drive away are stores and markets selling abundant French food and wine. The house is spacious and very tastefully decorated. It has all the amenities of a modern house, but the style of an ancient French farmhouse has been well preserved. We loved having meals at the large kitchen table and then sitting in front of the fireplace with a glass of burgundy wine. The location of the house is quite remote but its only five minutes by car to the next supermarket and a wonderful boulangerie (right next to the supermarket). Do not miss to buy their bread – it is delicious!
