El Pastor is situated in an outstanding valley in the Parque Natural of the Sierra de Grazalema 7km from the village, in a secluded rural position at an altitude of 600 meters, with the nearest neighbour a few minutes walk away. It is built on the site of an old mill and bakery and its focus is the river which can be seen from most of the windows. The accommodation is simple and typical of farmhouses and mills in the area. The garden is planted with native plants including rosemary and lavender. There are various outside areas where one can relax and a short path takes you to the river (which powered the mill), where a waterfall has created a natural plunge pool and waterfall which is perfect for swimming in, on hot summer days. This mountainous area is perfect for walking, cycling and bird watching. Scops Owls, Golden Oriels, Griffon Vultures, Black Kites and Bee Eaters have all been spotted close to the mill.
NOTE: From April 1 2017 WiFi Internet access will be available at the mill
We relaxed to the rhythm of the mountain stream and sat at night watching and waiting for streaks of dust-burned light across the studded sky. The house is rich with character, the whole area beautiful and the people friendly. We have looked back at the website 10s of times since our stay at the end of August 2011 and are going back again this summer.
The visitors book tells you how much people love this place.
Our gadget-friendly 3 children were as happy as we have seen them, with no TV or internet. Locally sourced catapults, the plunge pool, swimming in Zahara, Cuevas de Pileta, Ronda, tapas lunch and evening, seemed to be a more than adequate substitute. For the (allegedly) grown-ups reading For Whom the Bell Tolls just added to the experience. It even rained with gusto on our last day to remind us that we were properly in the mountains.
You might say we liked it. Lots. 5 stars.
We had a wonderful stay here. The place itself was even better than we expected. The location is fantastic, right next to the river. The house is perfect and had everything we needed.
The location within the Sierra de Grazalema is also perfect. Only about 15 minutes drive away from Grazalema, which is a very beautiful town and very easy to navigate, unlike some of the other towns we drove through. We did a hike in the park everyday and could have done way more had we stayed longer. The park is breathtaking.
We recommend this place for sure!
Lovely, magic, deeply relaxing - we stayed one week in may. The house is clean and nicely decorated - the highlight to me was the sleeping room, sitting on a rock, with a lovely wood ceiling above, I felt so secure and snug lying in this bed. And, of course, the terrace, sun nearly all day. The river is noisy, but you get used to it, and the birds are singing as if they were in a competition. Apart from that, the house is situated in a place with an incredible ambiance, you feel like you were all alone in the world, but: All you need is nearby, the nice villages Grazalema and Zahara, the lake near Zahara, towns to visit like Ronda and Arcos de la Frontera - or you take delicious walks in the mountains, easy or more amibitious, as you wish. We will return to this place, that's for sure - many thanks to Jack and all the best, Tanja and Richard from Germany
We stayed for 10 days at El Pastor. We were well taken care of on arrival and the house was well stocked with utensils and even the luxury of tea bags and cooking oil.
The plunge pool was lovely and even in Autumn we all bathed most days. My children were glad of their wetsuits.
The BBQ's in the evening under the stars were magical and on the couple of nights we needed the fire it was cosy inside.
The area is wonderful for walkers - you can easily get to the 'permit only' walks within 30 minutes. My children really enjoyed the reservoir about 15 minutes away where you can rent canoes and swim in the turquoise waters.
We spent a lot of time at Zahara and some of the other little white villages and towns - lovely festivals and great little artisan shops.
Ronda was a short trip away and easy for a day out.
We drove to the beach for a day and found the journey easy of you start early and come back late.
The weather was wonderful - between 23 and 27 degrees which was wonderful for this time of year.
All in all a great place for a family holiday if you like it quiet and your children like exploring the rivers and the hills.
This is a magic place - en enchanting, stylish house, well organized, with everything you need in a beautiful landscape. We loved to spend hours at the gorgeous little river and the waterfall behind the house. From here you can start many nice day trips - hiking in the mounains, swimming in the big lake a few driving minutes away or visiting white villages or amazing Ronda. The owner Jack was very friendly. We hope to come back one fine day...
El Pastor is a beautiful, well laid-out house. It sits in the mountains about a 15 min drive from Grazalema; the closest of the white villages you'll have read about. There's a river that runs past the house, a barbeque and terrace for al-fresco dining and a lake nearby to swim in. The starry night sky and the open fireplace kept us mesmerised for hours in the evenings.
Almost sounds too good to be true? Well, in a way, it is.
You see, we had planned to use the house as a base for exploring far and wide. That was probably our mistake, we should have considered its location more carefully. The house is remote and the area is mountainous/rural. If you're perfectly happy without WiFi, cellphone reception and close-by supermarkets then this is the place for you. There's hikes to be taken, birds to watch, oversized creepy crawlies to admire and freezing plunge pools to bask in.
Unfortunately, El Pastor is at least 1.5 hours' drive from the beach, Sevilla and other sights of Andalucia. Small, winding mountain roads make driving slow. The house is on the 'shadow side' of a valley so you'll get lots of sun in the morning but not very much for the rest of the day. Since it's at 800m above sea level, it's already much cooler than the rest of the area. A great feature in the summer, perhaps less so for the rest of the year. The river is freezing, as you'd expect - but due to the waterfall also quite noisy. You get used to the 'white noise' after a while - but calling this place tranquil is probably a stretch.
We were welcomed by a jovial fellow called Esteban that works for the owner, Jack. While getting to know the basic 'functions' of the house wasn't an issue, he wasnt really able to give us advice on what to see and do, where to eat, etc - all the things we'd have wished to hear from our 'host'. He made up for it with general bonhomie and a 'no problem' attitude.
Overall, a wonderful place, but no base for exploring Andalucia. More of a rural refuge for outdoor enthusiasts.
My partner and I had a fantastic time staying at El Pastor in August/September2010. We visited Grazalema for tapas more often than is reasonable and found a great lake to swim in - lazing around, eating good food, playing cards of an evening and stupidly getting in the way of the fireworks at the end of a fiesta.
The house is great, very comfortable and characterful, and the owner most hospitable and helpful. It's seclusion is calming, various wildlife captivating and I miss sitting in the early evening heat waiting for the pigs to come and drink at the stream or staring at the sky looking for vultures or eagles.
The whole area is beautiful and all the inhabitants very kind - and possibly the best at making fried cheese towers with strawberry sauce. I'm only disappointed that the house appears to be almost constantly booked and there's no room for us to go back this year.
El Pastor is in Grazalema National Park a mountainous area which is perfect for walking, cycling and bird watching. Scops Owls, Golden Oriels, Griffon Vultures, Black Kites and Bee Eaters have all been spotted close to the mill, Garganta Verde with its Griffon Vultures is highly recommended. Grazalema is the perfect White Village with two lovely churches, a museum, wool workshop, many bars, good restaurants, a bank, post office and two supermarkets. There is also bull running and flamenco music in the Fiesta del Carmen, July. The tourist office will arrange paragliding and adventure activities. Seville, Jerez and Granada are near for a sightseeing day trip. Ronda 25 Min drive away with the El Tajo gorge, old Muslim town and the bullring - one of the oldest and largest in Spain with an excellent museum. , and good shops make it a lovely place to visit. For swimming Lake Zahara is 15 min drive and you can swim, sunbathe and canoe from the beaches. Horse riding is also available.
