Bedrooms 1
Space 615 sq. ft.
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 2 - 3 nights

About the property

1 Bedroom, 2 Bath Cottage With Waterviews (Sleeps 2)

The cottage is in a very quiet setting; you can hear the sound of the humming birds as well as the whales, and walk to the edge of the pasture from the cottage to see the Orcas as they pass by. The nights are very dark and quiet as well. Set in a pastoral setting on a six-acre horse ranch, there is a lovely perennial garden outside your door with a pick your own vegetable garden (in season).

We are walking distance to secluded Eagle Cove with a sandy beach great for sunbathing & wading. Walk to American Camp National Park for hiking opportunities and island history information. We are just a 12 minute drive to Friday Harbor.

The interior design is a mix of world motifs acquired during our travels featuring oriental rugs, and European accessories and has a French Provence influence. There is also a lovely gas fireplace for romantic evenings.

Wake up to a view of a nature garden from your bedroom with a comfortable queen size bed. The elegant deluxe bathroom has a claw foot tub and toilet and vanity, Italian tiles and marble, heated floors and heated towel rack. The second bathroom has a lovely tiled shower with heated floors. Outside there is access to a picnic table and chairs.

Why Mary Gey-McCulloch chose San Juan Island

This property is a sunny location facing south east, south and west and is warmer and sunnier than other parts of the island, and mainly free of mosquitoes. There is a lovely 3 mile walk nearby with water and pastoral views and an easy walk to American Camp.

What makes this cottage unique

Though the cottage is in proximity to the main house, it is private. The benefits are that the owners are here and can attend to any needs you might have. You can interact with one another or be by yourselves as you wish.

Guestbook comments from the owner

San Juan County imposes an outdoor burn ban annually usually after the Fourth of July - September depending on the conditions of the dry grass. However, at the nearby South Beach, American Camp National Park there are designated fire pits available. A bonus is that you do not need to bring your own firewood as there is abundance of drift wood available, It is a lovely setting with the sea only feet away.

Beautiful cottage

  • 5 of 5

This is a very comfortable and beautiful cottage. The gardens in early August were stunning. We enjoyed the company of the well-mannered dogs and the horses were an added bonus just to observe them in their pastures. We remarked several times that there didn't seem to be one thing we needed that wasn't there. And, by the way, the bed and pillows very comfortable! 2017 has been a hard year for the whales in the Salish Sea (the absence of Chinook) and those of us who love them, but hopefully next year will be better.

Perfect stay on San Juan by the straits

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I fell in love with Mary and Fred's cottage. Everything was thought of and the location is absolutely perfect for relaxation, rest, meditation and romance. Fred even went the extra mile to help make sure we got on the ferry home since the ferry schedule was in flux with one ferry in for repairs. And we were sure to come home with one of Mary's magical prints.

We can't wait to return to this paradise on San Juan Island!

Lovely cottage with just about everything you need!

  • 5 of 5

I absolutely enjoyed our stay and loved Mary's cottage. My boyfriend and I stayed for a romantic getaway and this place definitely didn't disappoint. The cottage is exactly as seen in the photos, but what the photos don't relay is the charm of the cottage, rural location, or the host. The cottage is full of character and I could definitely sense Mary's artistic touch in every corner. Mary and her husband were very kind and helped show us around the first day.

Part of the uniqueness of the property were the owners horses, dogs and cats. All were super friendly and curious. Dorie the "puppy" was quite entertaining in particular. Another aspect not to be missed is the rock outcropping at the bottom of their property. The owners encouraged us to go to the rock and look for whales using the binoculars they provided. One day we noticed a bunch of boats out in the strait and so we went to look. Sure enough, the L Pod (Resident orca whales) were there and we were able to first see them through binoculars, then our own eyes and could even hear when they blew. AMAZING!

We were able to find everything we needed in the kitchen to cook and/or barbque our meals and there was plenty of room for two in the rest of the cottage. I loved waking up everyday and looking out at the amazing view while drinking coffee. The cottage also has a jacuzzi (that is private and decorated with strings of lights) that was perfect way to end the day after hiking and/or exploring the island.

Even though the cottage is more rural and located in the southwest side of the island, it doesn't take very long to get anywhere on the island by car and we got to the ferry within 15 minutes for an 8 am ferry. The owners put together a booklet of things to do on the island which was really helpful. I recommend doing the ~3 mile hike at Mount Grant, exploring American Camp and the nearby beaches, Lime Kiln Lighthouse (or Whale Watch Park) and tidepools at low tide, the nearby lavendar farm, lunch at Roche Harbor, farmers market on Saturdays, and music in the park by the ferry landing on Friday evenings and Sunday afternoons. And of course, a whale watching cruise. A friend recommended Maya Legacy Whale Watching and they were awesome!

Overall, loved the cottage and highly recommend it!

Exceeded Expectations

  • 5 of 5

Artsy, comfortable, and well appointed cozy retreat. Mary provided us with all the details about the Island offerings, and cottage workings. She and Fred were gracious and friendly, but not intrusive. As were the dogs and Dusty the cat! We felt at home immediately, and didn't want to leave.

Beautiful property

  • 5 of 5

A well equipped cottage and beautifully decorated. Just north of historic American Camp of the Pig War joint occupation. Spectacular view of the Strait of Juan de Fuca, on the Orca route. We saw Orcas twice in one day from the viewing area on the property.

Two friendly dogs belonging to the owner came around on a regular basis, which was fine by me, but some may not like dogs around. Also, the cottage is adjacent to the owners home, which may be a concern to some, i.e., a perceived lack of privacy, although, I did not have any problem with that. Had a great time!
