About the property

Two-story Villa, 3 Bedrooms, 3.5 Baths. Sleeps 6

Casa Solipaz, the premier property in the gated community of Armonia Eco-Village, offers constant breezes, mesmerizing ocean and mountain views, and a cooling, salt water infinity pool.

Situated at the highest point of this 25-acre, lush community, the home offers numerous fans as well as energy-efficient air-conditioning in each room.

Wake up to stunning ocean views from any of the three bedrooms.

The large upstairs master bedroom features a shower that looks out onto the sea. Practice yoga on the spacious, private patio located just outside the bedroom’s large sliding glass doors. Or just relax into the cushions of our outdoor furniture.

The downstairs en suite bedrooms have charms of their own. The poolside bedroom offers its own patio, perfect for reading or just soaking in the view while sitting in comfy, teak Adirondack chairs. The second downstairs bedroom has an “outdoor” shower with eye-level screened windows on three sides and stained-glass window insets throughout (no worries - only the monkeys and parrots can see in!).

The kitchen highlights include island cabinets made from guanacaste, the national tree of Costa Rica. The tree had fallen naturally in the jungle; a permit was required to remove it and use the wood. The doors throughout the home are constructed from farmed laurel, continuing the home’s Eco-friendly theme. The entire house and pool are solar-powered in keeping with Costa Rica’s national goal of carbon neutrality.

The fully functional kitchen offers a wide variety of cooking utensils, pots, pans, fridge, blender, coffee maker, teapot, griddle, toaster, dishwasher and microwave oven. Cook inside or make a pizza in our wood-fired pizza oven located on the patio in the back of the house (complete instructions from an experienced local pizza maker included!).

The rancho, located down the hill in front of the house, has a mini-fridge for storing cool drinks and is another great spot to hang out or sunbathe on the home’s many chaise lounges.

Bio-diverse gardens enhance the front of the house, filled with a variety of floral and palm species. At night, the gardens are illuminated by energy-efficient lighting which casts warm shadows over the landscape.

Bring your binoculars with you if you decide to hike down the trails behind the house to the river that runs through Armonia Eco-Village.

Iguanas, white-faced monkeys, howler monkeys, armadillos, pizotes, sloths, deer, foxes, puma, and a huge variety of birds - including toucan, parrots, hummingbirds, motmots, tanagers, and pelicans - live in the community and regularly visit our property.

A wonderful groundskeeper, and Gini, our terrific property manager who speaks english, french and spanish, will ensure that your stay here is memorable. She can help you arrange various excursions, including surfing, fishing, boating, kayaking, snorkeling, cycling, horseback riding, birdwatching, hiking, zip-lining and golfing.

Also ask about the many fine restaurants in the area. La Playa de los Artistas is our personal favorite; sitting right on the beach, you might be lucky enough to see dolphins dancing as you enjoy world-class cuisine.

About Kathy Swanwick

We first visited Costa Rica in 2008 and were immediately enchanted by the lovely people, slower lifestyle, incredible climate and wonderful food.

From the start, we felt comfortable here. So after a few more visits, we decided to look for a piece of land on which to build Casa Solipaz (House of Sun and Peace).

Standing atop our hill in Armonia Eco-Village, we were awed by the incredible ocean and jungle views as well as the constant, cooling breezes.

We were also impressed with Armonia's focus on protecting the environment; the small community has been carefully constructed with the least possible intrusion on the jungle and its many denizens.

We knew this would be the site of our second home, one we would like to share with others when we cannot be in residence.

Please enjoy the home's tranquility, as well as the area's many fun, exciting attractions!

Kathy Swanwick purchased this house in 2012

Why Kathy Swanwick chose Puntarenas

Casa Solipaz, with its calming, panoramic ocean and jungle views, simply emanates peace. Gentle breezes, a refreshing horizon pool and the sounds of howler monkeys calling in nearby trees await your arrival!

The brand new luxury home's ample outdoor seating areas assure relaxing days. Indoors, enjoy a home-cooked meal in the dining area, sit on the comfortable couch and watch a bit of TV on the 42-inch screen, or use the WiFi to catch up on your e-mail.

Hang around the house and property or head out to the hip beach town of Montezuma, just five minutes away by car. You'll find great restaurants and outdoor activities such as zip-lining, waterfall climbs and boating trips.

What makes this house unique

Casa Solipaz was designed with the environment and the mesmerizing ocean view in mind. The house and pool are powered by the sun, and we have many eco-friendly fans. There are also energy-efficient air-conditioners in each room - but you will probably not need them on most days. Open doors and the sea breeze will provide Nature's own air-conditioning!

The secluded area ensures quiet and privacy.

Please use the outdoor pizza oven; precise instructions are included.

Casa Solipaz - Truly Paradise in the Jungle

  • 5 of 5

We (2 middle-aged married couples) traveled to Costa Rica for the first time this past January - seeking both an escape from the Northeast in the dead of Winter, as well as a new experience in the tropics. We've been to the Keys, and to Puerto Rica (twice), and this time we wanted to stretch ourselves some more, and travel out-of-country.

We like out- of-the way places - away from the crowds, close to a beach, with the chance to explore and appreciate nature. Casa Solipaz did not disappoint...

My wife is into birding - and she quickly called this the best birding spot ever - birding from a chaise next to the infinity pool, with her binocs, and frequently exclaimed, "and what is that?" as a new bird species flew in... And we had agoutis and coatis visit regularly, and howler monkeys sounding off in the morning in the jungle around us.

The house is spectacular - views of the jungle and ocean and sunrise from every bedroom, and from all of the decks. We ate every meal outside - either at the house, of in nearby Montezuma.

Gini (the house manager) couldn't have been more helpful. After our arrival was impeded by a crane completely blocking the "road" (road is use very loosely) just a 1/4 mile from the house (combined with nearby home construction), Kathy, the owner, compensated by hiring a private chef to cook a meal for us at the house the last evening we were there... Camilo was awesome - he cooked us a fabulous meal, and was a wonderful person to meet - the perfect sendoff before we had to leave paradise.

We could not have been happier with our accommodations - spacious, comfortable, well-maintained, and well-equipped... Plenty of outdoor space - which is where we spent our time - 'cept for sleeping, and even then, there was some of that outside, dozing on the upper deck in the evening, music streaming in the background... The infinity pool overlooks the jungle and ocean - and we spent a lot of time sipping sangria and lounging in it in the afternoons and early evenings.

Montezuma is not a place that is easily reached. We drove from Liberia - on the lower-end of the Nicoya Peninsula, you won't be able to avoid about an hour of dirt roads - unless you follow Google, which took us off the beaten path, into the jungle, across (through) a 100 foot-wide river, and then onto "el goat trail" - Calle Pura Vida as a "shortcut" between 21 and 624... Take 21 to Cobano, instead...

A fabulous place to stay and the food is incredible.

Owner's Response: Thank you, Donald, I'm very happy you thoroughly enjoyed your stay at Casa Solipaz! As you say, Gini and chef Camillo are the very best and add so much to the Montezuma experience. You touched on all the great aspects of the house and its surroundings: the infinity pool and its glorious views; the outdoor living; the fabulous birding; the visiting wildlife, and the sheer comfort of staying in the villa - close enough to the beaches and great restaurants in Montezuma, yet from far enough away from it all to find peace and solace. We hope you find your way back to Casa Solipaz one day! Many thanks, Kathy

Great location, not as quiet as hoped

Verified Stay

First, the house is beautiful and well-appointed. Great kitchen with everything we needed. We had 6 guests and had plenty of room for everyone. The view is stunning and the setting amongst the trees is unparalleled. We enjoyed the sunrise off the bay every morning. The pool is a perfect size for lounging and there is plenty of chairs and outdoor furniture for everyone to relax. Lots of wildlife just outside the doors of the house (and inside if you count the geckos and occasional scorpions!)

The road to the house is a bit of a challenge and thankfully Gini, the local property manager, was available to guide us in, especially in the dark. Luckily, we rented in the beginning of the dry-season, so the roads were dusty and rough, but not unmanageable. This place is not so easy to find on the first pass, but not such an issue after a few trips into town.

Gini is great asset to staying at the house. She is indispensable; always available, and very helpful. Really appreciated her help when we needed it.

As for the negatives, there were two: the well pump and the construction noise of a nearby house. Near the end of the stay, the neighborhood well pump broke and we were limited in the water we could use. This isn't something anyone could have controlled, but it did put a damper on showers or general water usage. We were happy to have water, so that was a plus, if there was one.

The second negative (and the biggest one) was the 5:30am construction noise by the crew building a house next door - music/radios, saws, drills, etc. It's one thing to wake up to a troop of howler monkeys, it's another to wake up to someone cutting concrete with a power saw. I know this noise is only temporary but it was a big negative for our stay. We lost our goal of quiet morning sunrises. The nearby house will only be a few yards away from this place, so it won't private for very much longer.

Overall, it was a good stay. Not great, but good. We enjoyed the restaurants and the people we met, the weather was perfect (hot!) and the house was in a beautiful location.

Owner's Response: Hi Adam, First, please let me apologize about the early morning noise from the construction next door during your stay! The crew agreed not to play their music so early in the morning after you told Gini about that but I wish we had know earlier; we could have at least cut out that bit of noise for you. But I'm sorry you were there for what was apparently a very noisy time of the construction, which began in Oct. We were there in Nov. and it was not bad at all, and the VRBO Bear was there the week before you arrived in Dec. and was not bothered by the construction; in fact, they gave us a glowing, 5-star review. As did our mid-Nov. renters. The good news is that the construction is nearing the end. Our lovely new neighbors are building a small set-up, one designed with the least impact on us and the local environment. We have both been adding lots of tall landscaping to minimize noise, and, in fact, we will barely see their house once everything is in place. And the water issue, which has since been resolved: gosh, it seems everything conspired against your stay in Paradise! I'm glad at least that you had water, thanks to our back-up tanks. Several of our neighbors went without for a couple of days. I'm so glad Gini was her usual great help! If anyone can assist with any jungle issues that might arise, it's her! Happy you enjoyed our great kitchen, the pool, the glorious views and Montezuma in general. If you were ever interested in returning, we would offer you a discount to help ensure a better experience. Many thanks, Kathy

Paradise!

  • 5 of 5

We had the pleasure of staying for a week in November... and we fell in love! This was our first time in Costa Rica, we decided to avoid the all inclusive route and we are very glad we did. The house itself is absolutely beautiful. Consisting of everything you could possibly need for an extended visit. The view is breathtaking, soaking in the pool at night watching the boats on the ocean, and the lights across the peninsula was one of my favorites about the house. We were lucky to have a big group of howlers in the big tree over the house and we saw coati and agouti daily not to mention hummingbirds, blue butterflies, geckos, and frogs. Gini was lovely, she helped us with dining options and we were fortunate enough to have a dinner prepared by Chef Camillo- which was absolutely divine! He is very talented and such a wonderful person. We loved the area, there are some amazing restaraunts and the people are such gems.

We did find the SUV with higher clearance necessary and went through budget with no problems.

We highly reccommend staying here and we hope to make this our go to destination next time we return!

Thank you for everything!

This property is absolutely perfect,

We flew in to San Jose', rented a car, drove to Puntarenas, jumped on the ferry, and then drove the rest of the way from Paquera to the house, The house was everything we expected and more. Nestled in the Jungle, with a beautiful view of the Pacific. Gini, met us there with the keys, and a walk through of the home. Gini and Himi were there whenever we needed anything!

My wife and I took our son and his fiance. We cooked pizza in the brick oven, huge breakfasts every morning, and packed lunches for our daily excursions. The kids had the room with the outside shower while we took the upstairs master suite.

One morning during breakfast outside, a troop of probably 35 monkeys were in the trees right by the house, we were all so excited to see them.

We rented motorcycles in Santa Teresa and cruised around on the motorcycles when the weather was right (Be sure to wear a helmet, as my son was ticketed)

While we were there we zipped lined through the jungle, went to Isle Tortuga twice, scuba dived, jet skied, snorkeled, paddled boarded, and ate at some amazing restaurants.

My son has taken Spanish in school since he was very young through his senior year. Having said that, having the ability to speak Spanish fluently really helped.

I can not begin to recommend this property enough...everything was absolutely perfect!

Amazing house with a gorgeous view!

  • 4 of 5

Overall, we really enjoyed our stay at this house. The pool was great and the view from the patio was incredible. The only reason we're not giving 5 stars was because the AC went out in one of the rooms on the 2nd day of our 4 night stay. The electricians didn't come until the morning we were leaving. One of the couples put their mattress in the living room for 3 nights. Otherwise, we loved it!

Owner's Response: Hi, Alana, Many thanks for your review! I am so sorry that the a/c in one room went out during your stay and that it took two days for the electrician to arrive. There are only a couple of good electricians in the area and it can sometimes be difficult to get one to arrive in a timely manner when you need them. But I am happy that, overall, you enjoyed your stay at Casa Solipaz and we hope to have you as our guests again one day. Thanks again, Kathy Many thanks, Kathy

Simply great!

  • 5 of 5

Our family lodged in four different VRBO homes during our extended visit to Costa Rica and this home was by far the best! This is a beautiful vacation home with modern amenities. The view, pool, house design and accommodations were great. The location offers quick access to points in Montezuma but not part of the busy town. On site Gini is helpful and answered all our questions. Everything went perfect!

Owner's Response: Hi, Kimo, Thanks for the wonderful review! Gini is just the best; she is so sweet and helpful to our guests. Casa Solipaz, as you note, has in a nearly perfect location, close enough to the local fun in Montezuma, yet far away from the crowds. The peace and tranquility, not to mention the ocean view, are tangible and tantalizing. We hope to host you again one day. Many thanks, Kathy
