Why Damon chose Warehouse District

The elegant townhouse at 838 Camp Street was designed by James Harrison Dakin (1806-1852), an influential architect in New Orleans who also designed the landmark St. Patrick’s Cathedral down the street. The land was first owned by Gasquet, Parish & Co., a commission merchant company largely responsible for the initial development of the American Sector. Construction on this townhouse, originally one of nine sister “rowhouses,” began in the early 1840s.

The first known inhabitant of the townhouse was Walter Cox, a cotton merchant and owner of the cotton firm W. Cox & Co. established in 1858. It appears that the Civil War resulted in Cox’s firm going bankrupt, as his home was sold in a sheriff’s auction in 1867. The house was purchased by attorney Alfred J. Philips, partner in the esteemed New Orleans firm of Roselins & Philips. Sometime during the 1870s, ownership of the property transferred from Philips to his brother-in-law, influential attorney John Blackstone Cotton from Georgia, who married Alfred’s younger sister Sophia in 1852. Blackstone served as a New Orleans City Attorney in 1850, as a District Judge (1853-1857) and as Superintendent of Elections (1857-1858). During the Civil War, Cotton served as a Confederate Army Officer from 1861 until he fell ill in the field in 1862.

Margaret Robinson Barnett (1887–1977) purchased the property in May of 1921. Margaret owned and operated “Dixie Stove Works” out of what is now the property’s commercial space at 840 Camp. The company boasted itself as “the South’s largest manufacturer of stove parts.” Margaret and her husband also housed “Roomers” in the properties residential units beginning in 1930. These renters hailed from such varied places as Germany, New York, Louisiana, Minnesota, and South Dakota. The residence had become primarily commercial in the latter half of the 20th century, with Dixie Stove Works as its last commercial occupant.

Perfect place for our trip!

My wife and I traveled with the in-laws for their first trip to NOLA and this place was perfect. The location was great for Uber prices to the Garden District and the French Quarter and great for walking to other local attractions. The place itself was clean and quite frankly...awesome.

The perfect spot in New Orleans for a two couples getaway

The location was fantastic - close to everything yet not in a congested or overly busy neighborhood and walking about at night presented no reason to be afraid

There was one street car line stop two blocks away and the other three line were within a half dozen blocks

The apartment was really more of a full house - charming and functional with large common areas (living room, dining room and kitchen) downstairs, two bedrooms and two bathrooms upstairs (even a washer and dryer) plus a pleasant courtyard

We ate out (after all, it is New Orleans) but the kitchen seemed adequate if one cared to do some meals in

Communication with the host and manager was some of the best ever and they were most accommodating in every way

If we should make a return trip, this is the first place I would look to book for our stay

Stellar in every way possible -

We loved staying at Damon's place and hope to return. The CBD (central business district ) is just far enough away from the action and still so close. After a night of music, food and drinks you return to this quite paradise with an amazing patio. Also the sound system is impressive. When you read the history of the building that Damon put together you become a part of the story yourself. I just can't say enough about this property... Well done Damon

Great Place to Stay

We rented 2 units from Damon for our first time in Nola. We were there for a wedding @ the Ogden Museum. It was a perfect location! Steps from the wedding, walking distance from great food, and the WW2 museum. We were also able to walk the the Harrah's casino and Bourbon street with no problems and not have to stay in the loud Bourbon party. Would definitely stay here again!!!
