Overview

About the property

2 Bedroom, 2 bath house, walking distance to the beach and mountain footpaths

Our house sits between the foothills of the Taygetos mountains and the sea and is surrounded by olive groves. It is 650 m from the seashore, and a 10 minute walk through the olives to two lovely beaches: Pantazi beach which is sandy, and a neighboring pebbly beach. Pantazi has a quiet beachside cafe and the other beach has a nice restaurant overlooking it. The friendly village of Agios Nikolaos, where the writer Nikos Kazantzakis once lived with Zorba, is a 10 -15 minute walk from the house. You can walk or cycle there to get fresh bread in the morning and there are some lovely eating places and cafes. Stoupa with its happy beaches and holiday makers and charming Kardamyli are 5 and 15 minutes by car; they are on the same road that winds south through the stunningly rugged and beautiful inner Mani. Kalamata is about 45 minutes away by car. The impressive ancient site of Messinia is about 1hr and 15 minutes away.

There are 2 paths to hillside villages that start close to the house. (There are walking maps on the fireplace mantel) These include sections of kaldymeria, the narrow paths built of stone that for centuries were the only way between villages. There are many more trails within a 5 -15 minute drive. On these walks you stumble across tiny churches filled with beautiful Byzantine wall paintings or caves where people lived after Mystras fell to the Ottomans or friendly horses, sheep, chickens, cows or unfriendly (hobbled) bulls and all kinds of wildlife! You can end your hike with a Greek coffee, bread cheese and olives at a little village cafe. It is a perfect place for nature lovers and naturalists, lovers of history, walkers/runners/swimmers and romantics. In the spring the olive groves and pathways are full of wildflowers and in the summer the smell of dried wild herbs is everywhere and swallows fly through the arches of the porch.

One bedroom has a European King sized bed and the other, 2 single beds. Both bedrooms have balconies. There are also 2 single beds/couches in the living room. Both bathrooms have showers. The larger bathroom (not pictured) also has a washing machine. The bedrooms have air-conditioning and there are also ceiling fans and window screens there and downstairs. There is a fireplace in the living room and french doors to a terrace. There is a fully outfitted full sized kitchen with a toaster, electric kettle and french press. There is wifi and a sound system you can plug your phone into. There are art supplies, Scrabble, maps and some books. There is a barbecue in the garden and firewood stored next to the house. There are 2 bicycles which you can use on the Ag. Nik. to Stoupa bike path. In the nearby villages you can rent bicycles, kayaks and even go horse riding.

Andreas and Dorina who take care of the house will be nearby to help you in any way they can. Hopefully, everything you need for your beautiful adventures is provided!

About The Owner

Our family live in the suburbs of New York City, not far from where I was born. But I grew up in the UK and our extended family lives in the UK, Greece and Japan. In every place we have lived we have rooted ourselves by learning human history but also the species of trees, plants and wildlife through gardening and hiking. My husband and I met in California when we were both studying for MFAs at CalArts and apart from the natural world, the arts and music are still what we care most about.

The Owner purchased this house in 2015

Why The Owner chose Ditiki Mani

We have been visiting Greece for many years but we first came to the Mani in 2014 when we volunteered with the Turtle Conservation charity, Archelon, in Gythion. We were completely amazed by the rugged beauty of the Mani which is much more dramatic than other regions of Greece that we had visited. I brought my Mother here in 2015. She loved the area; when we saw this house for sale, she pressed us to buy it so she could holiday with us there and we could live there when we retire. We do not argue with Yiayia! Her photo is above!

What makes this house unique

This area of Greece is incredibly beautiful. It has an amazing climate with cool air drifting down from the mountains in the evenings. A person could spend a lifetime walking the hills and not see everything.

Guestbook comments from the owner

"The house is lovely and easy to stay in, and it was so nice to open the shutters each morning and have that amazing view of the sea - really quite idyllic. Your list of trips and information came in very handy. I can't think of a better way to visit the country for the first time- and I'm pretty sure I've now seen the most beautiful part."

special area, comfortable accomodation

  • 5 of 5

We will never forget our wonderful time at Swallows' Song. Being in an olive grove, near the beach, near Agios Nikoloas + Stoupa... it was a lifestyle. We enjoyed everything. The drive south along the coast from Katakolo was one breath-taking vista after another. The accomodation was very comfortable, clean, well appointed, supermarket nearby, enjoyed the bikes. And to cap it off there were books on kindle by Stavros Allanopolis who recounts his move to that same olive grove from the UK to entertain us.

A relaxing and beautiful place for our half term holiday in Greece

  • 5 of 5

A beautiful and spotless house, situated in a quiet olive grove, has beautiful views from both balconies out to the sea. Driving was stress-free from Kalamata (having driven out of Athens some years ago I was expecting a more adrenaline-fuelled experience and was pleasantly surprised). The roads were in good condition and had great sea views through stunning countryside while being clear of busy traffic (and we were there in school holiday time).

From the house a short walk through the grove is the crystal clear balmy sea and beach. Wild flowThe area has just enough tourist trade to provide good facilities (great beach cafe with good food) but very much unspoiled. Nearby Agios Nikoloas is a pleasant quiet town with good food (anchovies and squid particularly good).

The caves at Diros were amazing - toured on a punt - and we had the beach to ourselves. Kardimili is peaceful with some nice shopping and even better driving back to Stoupa through the mountains takes you through scenic hamlets and villages and the views are sublime.

I had a great holiday with my mother and daughter - from the 26 to 78 year old we were all delighted with our holiday to this quiet and peaceful part of the Peloponnese.

just a dream

  • 5 of 5

Car: recommended

Beaches and Agios Nikolaos are 10 -15 minutes walk away. You don't need a car but there are so many amazing places to visit it is nice to have one. Canoes can be rented on Stoupa beach and bicycles in both Agios Nikolaos and Stoupa. Nearby Kardamyli has a walking store that organizes hikes into the mountains. Kardamyli also has a small castle and museum. Ancient Messinia is about 1 hr 15 mins away. The Caves of Diros and museum, where stone age remains have been excavated, are around 1 hr south by road. There are many beautiful villages, historic places and beaches you can visit.
