Photos and Description of this 3 bedroom holiday home in Sainte-Marie-de-Ré - La Maison Balneaire

3 bedroom house to sleep 6, in the heart of Ste. Marie village

La Maison Balneaire has a stunning façade hidden behind an imposing gateway, and the equally beautiful interior of the house will provide all the comfort necessary for a perfect holiday on the island. The house has 3 bedrooms - on the lower floor there is one double and one twin, separated by a bathroom with walk-in shower, bath and WC. The master bedroom is situated at mezzanine level, and has a small dressing area leading to an en-suite shower room. There is an additional WC on the ground floor. The light and spacious dining room leads to a fully equipped kitchen, with dishwasher, microwave, large fridge/freezer and washing machine. The bright living room with open fire place seats 6 comfortably. The house is WiFi connected and offers English and French TV. There is also a DVD and CD player with a small library of films to enjoy. The beautiful and spacious courtyard, 75 m2 has garden furniture with seating for 6 people, and a barbecue is provided. There is outside storage for bikes.

The Island: L'Ile de Re is a beautiful, unspoilt and fiercely protected island, connected to the mainland and La Rochelle by a magnificent 3 km bridge. 'A flat, fragrant, family friendly holiday spot. Just 30km long and 5km wide, it's criss-crossed by an extensive network (100km) of cycle paths which wind through fields full of poppies, pine forests, pretty French villages, past fishing harbours, salt pans and oyster farms. It's also celebrated for its endless sandy beaches backed by powdery dunes. The island feels like the France, or rather the 'seaside' of yesteryear. It is the perfect place for running barefoot along the shore, playing hide and seek in the sand dunes, picking your way through rock pools and picnics on the sand. Strict building regulations have meant that even new properties have to stick to the low-slung whitewashed-with-green-shutters look. However, the chic shops and waterfront restaurants of the fishing villages give it a very French maritime sophistication.'

St Marie de Re and the immediate surroundings: La Maison Balneaire is in the heart of the authentic and unspoilt village of Ste Marie, situated just 1 km from the sea and the renowned Thalasso Spa therapy centre: 'Ideal for relieving, relaxing, revitalizing, slimming down, toning up - à la carte courses of treatment, special formulas by the day, the weekend, or a few days.' Ste Marie's beach is a perfect mixture of fine sand, rock pools and peaceful tranquility. The village square, providing a fresh food market, bread shop, tabac, restaurant, hairdressers, launderette, post office and bike-hire, is a 5 minute walk away. The beautiful village of La Noue, just 1 km away, offers more restaurants, a fresh fish shop and a cheese shop. Across the road from us is a wonderful library and media centre which is great for both children and adults: the kids can relax with books and magazines in their own comfy and colourful area, while you browse the books, DVD's and CD's, or surf the internet and check out the exhibition and art gallery.

La Rochelle: The beautiful and bustling harbour town of La Rochelle is most definitely worth visiting. The two famous harbour towers date back to the XIV Century and the arcaded streets give the town a real sense of history. The harbour is lined with wonderful seafood restaurants and bars, and by night it becomes both stunning and vibrant. The park is a lovely place to spend some peaceful time - enjoy the bird sanctuary and the animal enclosures, with peacocks, deer, goats and donkeys - the kids will love the well equipped play areas too. The world renowned Aquarium is a real treat for kids and adults alike, and there are numerous places of interest to visit, like the old Hotel de Ville and the Natural History museum. The man-made sandy beach is great for relaxing and sunbathing, with restaurants and casino just a few steps away. Further into the old town are more delicious restaurants and great shopping under the old arcades. Experience the wonderful fresh indoor food market which opens daily.

About Mick Williams

We are an English family who moved to France 9 years ago. We live in the beautiful harbour town of La Rochelle, right next to the Ile de Re. We started our gite / holiday cottage business 12 years ago, and it has grown into a small, successful enterprise. We offer accommodation which embraces the French way of life, with comfort and modern convenience.

We love Charente Maritime, and enjoy sharing its best aspects with our guests. We love the seafood and the restaurants this region has to offer. Cycling on the Ile de Re and in the Marais Poitevin is a real delight - so much to discover.

We are all musicians in the family, and enjoy the annual music and arts festivals in the town. Our favourite music venue is La Sirene at La Pallice in La Rochelle.

Our 12 year old twin girls are bi-lingual, and we do our best to keep up with them!

We look forward to welcoming you to La Maison Balneaire.

Mick Williams purchased this house in 2009

Why Mick Williams chose Ile de Re

La Maison Balneaire is unique not just to Ste Marie, but to the island as a whole - there isn't another house which is any way similar. It's a classified property, which means we must always keep the colours the same. Fortunately we love the distinctive light blue wooden facade and the contrasting cream walls!

We have carefully considered the interior design of the house, keeping it both contemporary and cosy, while remaining sympathetic to the style of the island and the age of the property.

You will love the courtyard, for alfresco dining, BBQ's and sunbathing - it's a real sun trap in the summer. We also have an ornamental pond which is sometimes home to frogs.

What makes this house unique

Our beach at Ste Marie de Re is a beautiful mixture of sand and rock pools, and is quieter than some of the other beaches on the island. Remember to bring or buy some rubber shoes for the rocks. It's a lovely walk from the house, via the town hall, church and vines.

We are just round the corner from a Cyclosurf bike hire shop. The staff there are very friendly and helpful, and will kit you out with everything you need.

Place Antioche is a 5 minutes walk from the house, where you will find a very good restaurant called Chai Peppette, fresh food market, boulangerie, tabac, tourist office, good pizza take-away and more.

If you're in the mood for some serious pampering, we have a famous Thalasso therapy spa, just a 5 minute cycle from the house. Well worth a visit and a little indulgence. The restaurant is also good there, with a lovely terrace and sea views.

A wonderful and relaxed holiday in a beautiful holiday house on an incredible island

  • 5 of 5

The property is beautiful and roomy and a total delight to stay in. We ate outdoors most days in the sunny courtyard, but we were also able to eat indoors at the generous dinning table by the kitchen. The huge windows on the living floor meant we were soaked in sunshine while cooking and dinning and also when relaxing on the huge sofas in the lounge.

The property is well equipped with quality goods, including lovely big cooking pots and serving bowls and plenty of plates and cups and cutlery. We did not find ourselves wanting for anything.

The showers provided plenty of hot water and the water pressure was brilliant.

We stayed for one week and wished we could have stayed for longer. The location of the property on the island is fantastic making it easy to get to everywhere.

There were two markets in the village and a few lovely eateries.

The owners of the property were really lovely and welcomed us when we arrived and were at the other end of the phone should we have needed anything.

Would certainly recommend.

This is a very special place in a superb location. Right in the centre of the village, less than 2 mins stroll to the boulangerie and the daily market but once you're within its walls, chilling in your private courtyard, you feel like the rest of the world is far away. The house itself is wonderfully singular, with fascinating fretwork on the exterior and the mature plants in the courtyard giving everything an air of relaxed maturity. The interior layout is particularly good if you have older children, two bedrooms and bathroom in the lower floor and one on the top, also with bathroom, and the kitchen and living area in the middle so everyone in the family gets their own space. If you enjoy cooking, the kitchen is a joy, lots of space to create with the amazing local produce (and it is amazing, far better than anything you can find in London at a fraction of the price).

Sainte-Marie is equally special. It's not the tourist hotspot that Saint-Martin and, to a degree, La Flotte are; neither is it as much a beach resort as La Bois Plage and (to our eyes) La Couronne. In fact the French seem to have pretty much kept it all to themselves we only heard a smattering of English and German with a little Dutch during our stay. But it is totally charming, and all the other places are easy to get to, including by bike, for a short visit.

Finally, Mick and Carole are simply the nicest and most helpful hosts, and they have clearly put a huge amount of thought and effort into creating a home that is a perfect base for a truly memorable holiday.

Lovely holiday home in super location

  • 5 of 5

We have just returned from a fantastic holiday at this lovely house on the Ile de Re.

La Maison Balneaire is so comfy, cosy leather settees and is tastefully furnished. Mick and Carole have thought of everything even egg cups ! For once the house looks just like the pictures on the website. There is a private patio outside perfect for relaxing after a day’s cycling.

St Marie de Re is an excellent base, boulangerie, butcher and supermarket a short walk or cycle away. We had an amazing meal at the L’Ile Sous le Vent, we were lucky to get a table and it’s essential to book.

We hired some brilliant bikes from the cycle shop round the corner and spent many happy hours touring the island by bike. It was lovely to be able to cycle to La Flotte or St Martin for lunch and to the beach for a swim. The island is crisscrossed with cycle paths. It’s easy cycling and all the towns have plenty of bike parks.

Mick and Carole were so helpful, particularly when our son in the UK needed some urgent documents signing! We would love to visit again and would highly recommend la Maison Balneaire.

beautiful spacious characterful house

  • 5 of 5

We loved this property - it was spacious, well equipped and well maintained as well as being a beautiful historic property. The free wifi, british and french TV and DVD player were a real bonus . The bathrooms were modern with good showers and there was plenty of hot water for all of us. The kitchen had pretty much everything you could think of.

Carole & Mick were wonderful hosts, providing us with a welcoming bottle of wine, giving us plenty of local information and taking us to the station on the final day so that we did not miss our train when our taxi did not turn up which was beyond the call of duty in my opinion (but very much appreciated).

The location of the property is good within the town, a cycle hire shop being just around the corner and a fabulous boulangerie lying in the town square only a couple of minutes walk away. There are beaches close by which are clean and dune-backed and St Martin, La Flotte, Rivedoux-Plage, Bois-Plage and La Couarde are easily reached by bike. As keen cyclists we made it up to Portes-en-Ré on two occasions as well as to Loix, Ars, St Clements and Le Phare des Baleines without any trouble.

The Carrefour supermarket is close by and easily reached on foot or by bike. The Respiré free shuttle will also take you there as part of its route.

I would recommend both this property and the Île de Ré as great places for a holiday. We will be back!

Utterly magical

  • 5 of 5

This is a fabulous 3 story house owned by kind, polite and considerate people. It's a fantastic layout if you are a family as the main living space is open plan but there is a double bedroom and ensuite upstairs if you want some privacy from your kids but also a nice downstairs double bedroom if you want / need to be close to your children as the other bedroom which is a twin is one this level. The house is well equipped, the decor is understated and chic yet is comfortable and has a great home from home feeling. Small things like UK TV channels for your kids after a hard day of cycling is welcome. The beds were comfortable although I agree that the doubles could be larger but this is minor. Saint Marie is a lovely, authentic village with a wonderful beach and great access via the bike lanes to the other villages and we'd ride La Flotte and St Martin with a 6 and 4 year old with ease each day.

All in all - book this lovely house. You won't regret it.

Thanks to Mick and his family for renting it to us.

Charming villa for a holiday

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Maison Balneaire recently and had a wonderful time. This home is very clean, well-maintained, and tastefully furnished. There is no clutter anywhere, which allows you to fully relax, yet it has everything you need to prepare meals and sleep comfortably. We especially enjoyed the patio area for dining and the spacious bed/bathrooms. Mick was very prompt in correspondence before our stay and greeted us upon arrival to show us around, which was very helpful. Our favorite memories include the quaint town/shops, interesting beaches, and bike rentals/paths in the area. Staying here offered us everything we were looking for - a worry-free escape to a simpler time!

Ste. Marie is an unspoilt village on the south coast of the island, right by the sea and close to the bridge from La Rochelle. Full of character - like a '60's Truffaut filmset - with the convenience of restaurants, shops and markets just around the corner.

Discover the island's numerous sandy and beautiful beaches, and the ten villages each with their own unique character. The gorgeous harbour towns at St Martin, La Flotte and Ars are particularly worth visiting - here you can find wonderful restaurants, fresh food markets and chic shopping.

The island is also famous for its salt marshes, oyster beds and bird life, and at the top of the island is the famous Phare de Baleine lighthouse. One of the best ways to discover the island is by bike on the specially designated cycle routes, of which there are many.

Nearby La Rochelle is a beautiful town, full of history and very elegant, with a fantastic daily indoor fresh food market and excellent shopping - well worth the visit.
