Buralla guest come back for its location, facilities, modernity, grounds and views.

Buralla sits in a superb hill-top location with stunning views. Facilities include:

- huge fully equipped kitchen

- air-conditioned bedrooms, every one with superb views

- en-suite bathrooms

- free wifi

- satellite TV (including Sky Sport channels) & DVD player

- large outdoor dining area with BBQ

- separate cottage 10 metres from the main villa with its own kitchen, sitting room and TV

- beautifully kept lawns, flowerbeds and borders

- volleyball/badminton court

- 5 a-side soccer pitch

- bocce court

- secluded swimming pool and gazebo

- olive groves

- all surrounded by unforgettable 360 degree views.

Buralla is unusually spacious for Italy and is perfect for groups of friends, families and reunions. It has 8 bedrooms sleeping 16, with 7 bathrooms, plus spill over sleeping for two more adults or 4 children on fold out beds.

Upon request, we can refer you to a local chef who will shop and prepare meals from her Tuscan menu. A great time and money saver. Why go to a more expensive restaurant when you can be sure of a great meal and sensational view sitting outside at Buralla. She also offers cooking lessons which is great fun.

Lucca: The walled city of Lucca, only 15 minutes from Buralla, is one of the most beautiful places in Tuscany. Big enough to have everything, yet small enough to cover easily and safely on foot or by rented bicycle. For a rooftop view of Lucca, stroll around the 4km city walls. Or cut through the middle on the car-free Via Filiunga. On this street alone you will sample the very best of Tuscan life: visit beautiful San Michele and San Frediano Churches; climb the Guinigi Tower and Torre delle Ore; pause for a restorative coffee or meal in the elliptical Amfiteatro; shop at any number of beautiful outlets; drop into the residence of Giacomo Puccini, and listen to a short evening recital at San Giovanni Basilica or the Opera house. Tosca, Madame Butterfly and many other of Puccini's works are performed in the summer festival at Torre del Lago which is nearby on the Mediterranean coast.

Active life around Lucca: Look out of Buralla's windows and ask youself 'what do I want to do today?' You have 360 degree views and the choice is yours. Within easy walking distance you can visit the renaissance palace 500 metres away at the bottom of the property. You could stroll through the vineyards and olive groves into the Pizzorne hills on one of the marked trails. You could drive to the beaches of Versilia and Forte dei Marmi overlooked by the spectacular Alpi Apuane which provide the world famous marble from nearby Carrara. Visit the little hill top villages of Montecarlo, to taste wines or Collodi, the home of Pinnochio.

Drive an hour east and you are in Florence. An hour west and you could be climbing the tower of Pisa. North West, Cinque Terre.

To the north of Lucca the Garfagnana valley presents yet another typology - dense forests, hill top towns like Barga and Castelnuovo.

About Simon Sudbury

That little photo is me playing olive harvest supervisor during the All Saints school holiday at the beginning of November. My Italian wife and I love escaping bleak northern Europe with two or three families that week. We issue buckets, nets and ladders to the kids - who spend many happy hours up the olive trees - while we concentrate on the important things: taking in the views, lazy lunching, nattering away, poking the coals on the BBQ, strolling to a local vineyard. Very restorative.

Simon Sudbury purchased this villa in 2003

Why Simon Sudbury chose Capannori

We saw a ruin on a hill while looking for a holiday home away from London's bustle. What a piece of luck.

What makes this villa unique

Friends and family reunions. The setting is exceptional but what sets Buralla apart is being able to comfortably cater for every generation's needs and for no-one to feel hard done by. For example the downstairs suite, and level floors and accesses are great for the less mobile; on the other hand, there's a playroom next to the huge kitchen so parents can keep an eye on little ones if necessary while entertaining around the bar. I'm beginning to believe Buralla also has a special catalytic effect on people by bringing previously hidden talents to the fore. Two examples from September last year - an unbelievably good Indian meal for 20 cooked with stupendous skill and care by a friend who I thought only did fried eggs. And, days earlier, a not particularly hydro-dynamic chap called Jim (48) did 4 lengths of the pool underwater non- stop. Please someone, break this record and let me know. He lived to tell the tale and has become unbearable. (2015 update: the record now stands at 5, thanks to Amelie, a 15 year old from France)

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had really good time at Buralla - beautiful house, beautiful location, everything perfect. Matteo's dinners were exceptional - bravisssimo! He was very attentive and professional and both dinners were exquisite.

(Original Italian: Ci siamo trovati veramente bene a Buralla - casa stupenda, location bellissima, tutto perfetto. Le cene con Matteo sono state eccezionali - lui e' stato bravisssimo, molto attento e professionale e entrambi le cene erano squisite.)

Tranquil location with stunning views

  • 5 of 5

First class location with great facilities. We had a local chef cook for 3 nights for the 15 of us - well worth it. The place itself was very well maintained and extra features like the outside barbeque area, boules pitch, tables tennis, and of course swimming pool were well utilized. Area was a bit more hilly than originally thought, but made for better views. Lunch in Lucca was an easy 20 min drive, and Florence just over an hour. Ultimately a great time was had by everyone (15 adults and 4 kids). thanks

This villa is beautiful, clean, and in great shape!

  • 5 of 5

We were a group of 11, stayed for a week, but wish it could have been for the summer. Lino oversees the house and gardens and is a great source of information. Everyone was responsive to all of our needs. My sister broke her arm while there and Lino got us an app't at a private physician. Everyone enjoyed the pool, kitchen is well equipped, towels are changed mid-week. We had a problem with internet service which was addressed every day until working. We hired the chef for two dinners and one breakfast, a real treat! Go UP the mountain for a superb meal at the hotel and restaurant (can't remember the name, sorry). Stop looking at villas and book this one!

Owner's Response: Great to hear you enjoyed your time at Buralla and you are welcomed me back anytime. Rest assured the new internet is working - the problem wasn’t technical but due to my not realising it was impossible to set up payment for the provider from abroad (where we live.) Any way it’s sorted and we look forward to having you back.

Magical property in the hills of Tuscany

  • 5 of 5

We had our extended family stay at Villa Buralla and loved every minute . Our family, ages 75 to 11 years old were very comfortable and enjoyed not only the villa itself but the property including a beautiful pool which was a treat at the end of a day of sightseeing . The location is such that we were able to visit: Pisa, Florence, Lucca, Monte Carlo

(wonderful vineyard), and Cinque Terre. I would recommend this villa for any large group.

There was plenty of sleeping arrangements- the two oldest grandsons slept in the cottage! On our last eventing after a game of family bocci, Antonella cooked us a wonderful meal and everything was delicious. Lino keeps the property in the very best condition and was very helpful answering our questions. We will dream of Villa Buralla for many years.

The absolute perfect place for a family reunion!

  • 5 of 5

The villa was in a gorgeous location with a sweeping lawn overlooking the Tuscan hills. There was plenty of splashing, and laughing at the pool as we had a group ranging in age from 5 to 72. There were bedrooms aplenty, with a separate cottage next door! The kitchen was more than adequate and the best part was that Simonetta cooked for us every other night. We would have had her more but the leftovers were yummy and no fuss. She and her husband were wonderful. It was better than going out to dinner as we dined al fresco every meal. We sent the parents to a lovely restaurant nearby one night which they rated as four stars. One of the attractions, for part of the group, were the number of walks available. We walked a good 6 or 7 miles each morning. During the day there were endless things to do, from going into Lucca, taking the train to Florence, boat tours of the CingueTerra, Pisa, tours of Carrara and much more. We also chose to sit and relax for a couple of days. The washing machine was needed and worked well and the clothes line outside easy and perfect. If we had one complaint, a couple of the mattresses could be replaced. Oh, I almost forgot the bocce court which provided lots of evening family entertainment. Thank you so much for providing this spectacular and special place. We will never forget these two weeks, our experiences were memorable, and our stay delicious in every way.

Lucca is a jewel of a city, strategically placed between Florence and Pisa, but smaller, safer and perfect for walking. Aristocratic renaissance families built majestic palaces in the hills north of Lucca to benefit from the close proximity to the cities and the gentle breezes coming from the coast. Buralla overlooks perhaps the most stunning example of these palaces, Villa Torrigiani, which is well worth a visit. (See On your way back pick up some wild boar sausages for the BBQ. This region is packed with things to enjoy: Florence and its treasures are 55 mins away; Pisa, 45 mins; music, opera, architecture, gastronomy in Lucca (whose most famous son is Puccini); thermal spas and golf in Montecatini; beaches and fashion in Forte dei Marmi; marble and sculpture in Carrara and Pietrasanta; mountains and forests in the Garfagnana; and beautiful walks, biking, food, wine and world famous olive oil right outside the door.

Other Activities: Opera, music, art, wine and olive-oil tasting

Golf: Montecatini - winds through olive groves; very charming, and a good walk. Buggies a good option.

Le Pavoniere - top class Arnold Palmer design near Prato. No bad holes, several over water. Lovely views all around. Really good condition.

Versilia - Luxurious club house and very good course.

Cosmopolitan, near Pisa. Similar to Versilia plus water holes.

Tirrenia, beautiful 9 holes which winds through the pine forest next door to Cosmopolitan.

Ugolino, south of Florence - old style hill side course with great charm, and very welcoming. Take a buggy in high summer, because it gets hot!

Ski: Abetone is a small resort about 90 minutes away. While not a major destination for international ski tourism, it has spawned several italian champions over the years and makes a great day out.
