Photos and Description of this 8 bedroom holiday villa in Capannori - Villa Buralla

Renovated to combine Tuscan charm with proper kitchens, bathrooms and systems.

Buralla guests come back. Why? The combination of location (central Tuscan setting on a hill with stunning views), facilities (proper kitchen and bathrooms) and modernity (wifi, sat TV -including Sky Sport ) Outside it has soft lawns, beautiful flowerbeds and borders, volleyball and bocce courts, secluded swimming pool, olive groves - all surrounded by unforgettable 360 degree views.

Buralla is unusually spacious for Italy featuring air-conditioned bedrooms and en-suite bathrooms, modern kitchen suitable for causal eating and gathering, extensive lush lawns. Buralla is perfect for groups of friends, families and reunions wishing to visit Pisa, Florence and Lucca.

An option is to have the chef shop and prepare meals from her Tuscan menu. A great time and money saver. Plus you are sure of a view while you eat.

Lucca: The walled city of Lucca, only 15 minutes from Buralla, is one of the most beautiful places in Tuscany. Big enough to have everything, yet small enough to cover easily and safely on foot or by rented bicycle. For a rooftop view of Lucca, stroll around the 4km city walls. Or cut through the middle on the car-free Via Filiunga. On this street alone you will sample the very best of Tuscan life: visit beautiful San Michele and San Frediano Churches; climb the Guinigi Tower and Torre delle Ore; pause for a restorative coffee or meal in the elliptical Amfiteatro; shop at any number of beautiful outlets; drop into the residence of Giacomo Puccini, and listen to a short evening recital at San Giovanni Basilica or the Opera house. Tosca, Madame Butterfly and many other of Puccini's works are performed in the summer festival at Torre del Lago which is nearby on the Mediterranean coast.

Active life around Lucca: Look out of Buralla's windows and ask youself 'what do I want to do today?' You have 360 degree views and the choice is yours. Within easy walking distance you can visit the renaissance palace at the bottom of the estate. You could stroll through the vineyards and olive groves into the Pizzorne hills on one of the marked trails. You could drive to the beaches of Versilia and Forte dei Marmi overlooked by the spectacular Alpi Apuane which provide the world famous marble from nearby Carrara. Visit the little hill top village of Montecarlo, to taste wine at the excellent enotec.

To the north of Lucca the Garfagnana valley presents yet another typology - dense forests, hill top towns like Barga and Castelnuovo.

About Simon Sudbury

That little photo is me playing olive harvest supervisor during the All Saints school holiday at the beginning of November. My Italian wife and I love escaping bleak northern Europe with two or three families that week. We issue buckets, nets and ladders to the kids - who spend many happy hours up the olive trees - while we concentrate on the important things: taking in the views, lazy lunching, nattering away, poking the coals on the BBQ, strolling to a local vineyard. Very restorative.

Simon Sudbury purchased this villa in 2003

Why Simon Sudbury chose Piana di Lucca

We saw a ruin on a hill while looking for a holiday home away from London's bustle. What a piece of luck.

What makes this villa unique

Friends and family reunions. The setting is exceptional but what sets Buralla apart is being able to comfortably cater for every generation's needs and for no-one to feel hard done by. For example the downstairs suite, and level floors and accesses are great for the less mobile; on the other hand, there's a playroom next to the huge kitchen so parents can keep an eye on little ones if necessary while entertaining around the bar. I'm beginning to believe Buralla also has a special catalytic effect on people by bringing previously hidden talents to the fore. Two examples from September last year - an unbelievably good Indian meal for 20 cooked with stupendous skill and care by a friend who I thought only did fried eggs. And, days earlier, a not particularly hydro-dynamic chap called Jim (48) did 4 lengths of the pool underwater non stop. Please someone, break this record and let me know. He lived to tell the tale and has become unbearable.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had really good time at Buralla - beautiful house, beautiful location, everything perfect. Matteo's dinners were exceptional - bravisssimo! He was very attentive and professional and both dinners were exquisite.

(Original Italian: Ci siamo trovati veramente bene a Buralla - casa stupenda, location bellissima, tutto perfetto. Le cene con Matteo sono state eccezionali - lui e' stato bravisssimo, molto attento e professionale e entrambi le cene erano squisite.)

Fantastic house.

  • 5 of 5

The house was perfect for our extended family group. Plenty of space, clean and well maintained. The directions from the airport were spot on so we arrived relaxed and carried on from there.

Lucca is beautiful and must be visited.

We enjoyed a fantastic week in Italy. The house is amazing along with the scenery. Hope to be back here very soon.

Perfect for large group- spacious, comfortable, lovely setting with room for everyone.

  • 5 of 5

We were an extended family of 18, aged from mid teens to mid eighties, gathered together from various parts of the world to spend a week in Italy together this August. Villa Buralla, with its space, comfort, peaceful setting, stunning views over Lucca and surrounding areas, large gardens, beautiful pool, outdoor BBQ area in a shaded loggia, with its memorable nightly backdrop of the twinkling lights in the valley, far exceeded our best expectations. The shuttered windows were fitted with mosquito nets so we all slept comfortably with open windows and gentle hill top breezes, despite the high August temperatures. Although the bedrooms were fitted with air conditioning, we hardly used it. We went to sleep at night to the sounds of the crickets outside our windows and were woken in the mornings to the sounds of cocks crowing and church bells ringing. One of the highlights of our week was an evening meal cooked and served by the lovely Simonetta and her helper, Roberta. This is a must! We highly recommend Villa Buralla.

Fantastic - best holiday ever!

  • 5 of 5

This was truly a holiday to remember. Three generations (8 adults and 6 children) aged from 7-76yrs had a marvellous time at Buralla. We rarely get together as a whole family so to spend a week in such marvellous surroundings was a huge treat. One of us celebrated a 70th birthday while we were there, and it couldn't have been more perfect. The villa was amazing - very spacious and comfortable; plenty of room for everyone; masses of bathrooms; great facilities. Simonetta cooked a delicious meal for us on three evenings, and couldn't have been more welcoming and cheerful. Much fun was had in the pool and playing boules etc. Each of the four families had a car, so had a certain amount of independence, though we all came together in the evening. It was wonderful sitting out having dinner, watching the sun go down over the hills in the distance. All in all, we couldn't have had a better holiday. As one family member said 'it is the best week of my life' - that says it all!!

Wonderful Stay at Villa Buralla

  • 5 of 5

My family of 14 had a fabulous week at Villa Buralla. The property is absolutely beautiful in every way. The villa is spacious and so comfortable. The grounds are absolutely gorgeous and the view from the pool is spectacular.

On at least three occasions, we had Simonetta and her assistant Roberta prepare dinners for us and I can only say that the food was magnificent and that we consider them a part of our extended family. Our stay here will always be remembered with love and fond memories by our entire family. I highly recommend this beautiful property to everyone.

Wonderful vacation

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful week in Buralla, the house was great and it offered all the comfort and facilities for an enjoyable and relaxing vacation for adults and kids. The surroundings and the views were stunning, just as you picture Tuscany, also we found it easy to visit Lucca, Pisa, Florence and the seaside. The service offered was great and we enjoyed some excellent cooked italian meals by Simonetta in the evenings sitting outside with our friends. We can definitely recommend Burralla if you are planning a vacation in Italy with your family or friends.

Relaxation and wellbeing in style

  • 5 of 5

We (a mix of Swedes and Brits) were 8 adults and 9 children and the property accommodated us easily, so that peace and quiet were never an issue. The house is elegantly furnished and decorated. The bedrooms are all a good size and the bathrooms in very good order. The very big garden was a constant source of entertainment for the children and the pergola a great place to have lunch and dinner with super views over the valley to Lucca. The secluded pool is a good size and has a shaded gazebo to shelter from the hot sun. We took the wise (gastronomically and economically) option to have delicious home-cooked Tuscan food prepared for us. The only risk with Buralla is that one sacrifices "improving" tourism for the dolce vita at home. It's one of those places where you immediately relax and feel at ease. Strongly recommended and hoping to return soon.

Lucca is a jewel of a city, strategically placed between Florence and Pisa, but smaller, safer and perfect for walking. Aristocratic renaissance families built majestic palaces in the hills north of Lucca to benefit from the close proximity to the cities and the gentle breezes coming from the coast. Buralla overlooks perhaps the most stunning example of these palaces, Villa Torrigiani, which is well worth a visit. (See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Villa_Torrigiani). On your way back pick up some wild boar sausages for the BBQ. This region is packed with things to enjoy: Florence and its treasures are 55 mins away; Pisa, 45 mins; music, opera, architecture, gastronomy in Lucca (whose most famous son is Puccini); thermal spas and golf in Montecatini; beaches and fashion in Forte dei Marmi; marble and sculpture in Carrara and Pietrasanta; mountains and forests in the Garfagnana; and beautiful walks, biking, food, wine and world famous olive oil right outside the door.

Other Activities: Opera, music, art, wine and olive-oil tasting

Golf: Montecatini - winds through olive groves; very charming, and a good walk. Buggies a good option.

Le Pavoniere - top class Arnold Palmer design near Prato. No bad holes, several over water. Lovely views all around. Really good condition.

Versilia - Luxurious club house and very good course.

Cosmopolitan, near Pisa. Similar to Versilia plus water holes.

Tirrenia, beautiful 9 holes which winds through the pine forest next door to Cosmopolitan.

Ugolino, south of Florence - old style hill side course with great charm, and very welcoming. Take a buggy in high summer, because it gets hot!

Ski: Abetone is a small resort about 90 minutes away. While not a major destination for international ski tourism, it has spawned several italian champions over the years and makes a great day out.
