The Cottage By the Creek isn’t just an alternative to a hotel/motel, but rather a truly wonderful experience when you visit our lovely town of Chico.
I decided to rent the cottage as a bed and kitchen property when my mother left her and my father’s home to move to the medical center where my father was suddenly a permanent resident due to multiple strokes. Many of their furnishings were too beautiful to part with, but too large for her new, one-bedroom apartment, so she shipped them to Chico in hopes that I could use them myself, or sell them for her. Well, selling her pieces was not an option in this economy, and there was no room at the main house in which to store them. While looking for cheap storage alternatives for her many things, the long-term renter in the cottage gave notice. Suddenly, there was my solution...furnish the cottage and make it available to those adventurous travelers seeking a different kind of experience.
Comfortable and cute, the cottage comes fully furnished: kitchen with Dansk dishes, silverware, cutting knives, Kitchen Aid Mixer, Cuisinart, blender, coffee maker, Keurig style also available, pots, pans, mixing bowls...gas stove; whatever you may need, it should be there. Extra rolls of paper towels and new sponges are provided as are any cleaning supplies you may need. Dish soap and liquid hand soap are also stocked.
The wall unit is both air conditioning and heat and can be operated via remote control. There is a ceiling fan in the living room and bedroom plus portable fans for additional air circulation in the summer time.
Handmade quilts by my mother grace the bed and sofa. Soaps, towels, razors, hand lotion, puzzle books and pencils are stashed in the bathroom along with extra t.p. and Kleenex.
There is also a stacked washer/dryer with laundry soap provided, built-in ironing board (I know, who irons?), iron, spray starch, queen sized bed (additional inflatable bed)… dog treats. I provide snacks, drinks, bread, eggs, and seasonal fruit upon your arrival, and am also happy to pick up specific items you may want. There is also coffee, tea, and coca, mix for hot drinks.
The T.V. is set up for local channels, Netflix (basic subscription) and Hulu plus. There is also a DVD and VCR player if you care to bring your own tapes. The apple box for the Netflix/Hulu options has the HDMI cord, which you can plug into your laptop if you want to stream from that. And, yes, that would mean there is WIFI! I know I can’t live without my computer, and I wouldn’t expect you to live without yours either! There is also a pretty nice stereo in the living room with CD, cassette and AM/FM. I didn’t think the CD part worked, but one of the guests said it did… I keep forgetting to test it… so it might. But the FM/cassette is great for sure!
There are two bicycles with locks and helmets (I usually use one during nice weather to commute to work with), tennis courts (rather new and only a short 10 minute walk or 3-minute bike ride away), outdoor dining with furnishings, water feature right outside your door for a relaxing atmosphere and a place for your dog to cool his/her feet. Outdoor kitchen (BBQ), mini hot tub, and pool (lounge chairs and towels provided). The area is well-lit at night, and there are tiki torches you can also light if there is little to no breeze.
Your large covered deck looks out onto the digging grounds for my dachshunds. My hope is that someday they will actually catch a gopher! The garden is also here and guests may helps themselves to whatever is ripe.
Competing for your attention will be Cooper, Mem (short for Agamemnon), and Obi-Wan. They are particularly fond of the treats in the cottage. Feed them, they’re yours! Doesn’t work with Bean – my oldest - he’s all about the ball – but if you throw his ball in the pool on a hot day - that will be treat-like enough!
If you are bringing a dog, we will work out a system to have yours out and mine in and visa versa. This works well, and during the week mine are used to their outdoor kennel which is where they stay. They do not need access to the yard during the day. If you leave your dog in the cottage while you are away, please crate your dog. Also, Chico has fleas, so make sure your dog has been treated for fleas before arrival. If you forget, I have extra - please notify me and we will get him/her treated.
The heart of Chico is our downtown and it is a mere 5 minutes drive from the Cottage (exactly one-mile). Chico State is also very close and is easier to visit by foot or by bike. The area where I live fronts Big Chico Creek and is a haven for walking, jogging, and biking.
With the addition of instant booking the check-in and check-out times are not always flexible. If no one is scheduled to check in the cottage the day you leave, then you can leave as late as you like, however, if someone is coming in, then check out will be 11 a.m., however, you can store your belongings in the main house for as long as you like.
No maid service unless prearranged.
So there you have it… not a cheap alternative to a motel/hotel, but a comparable one, with way more amenities… and the chance to experience Chico as if you lived here! I work Mon-Fri, so the backyard (pool) is completely yours all day.
Thank you for taking the time to read this rather lengthy description… I look forward to meeting you…
I have lived in Chico since 1978 when I first attended Chico State. I love our town and the wonderful activity and diversity the University brings. I have 4 weiner dogs...they're a wonderful breed albeit a tad noisy at times...but they are great company and provide an excellent warning system! If you stay with us, you must like dogs! If you have a small dog - bring it - the yard is secure and a wonderful place for your four-legged friend to hang out.
Chico is a great place to experience small town life with big city choices. There's also a lot of recreational opportunities in the area, beginning with Bidwell Park...just 2 miles from my home.
Darcy Davis purchased this cottage in 1992
I love this part of town because it is old Chico. The Oak trees are enormous, there are chickens in the alley and the location is close to town and the park.
Bidwell Ave. is basically a one-lane street with lots of foot traffic and the occasional biker. Big Chico creek runs along the Avenue (approx. 3 miles long), and adds much beauty to this unique side of town.
Our stay was very comfortable and pleasant. We were pleased to have an outdoor lounging area, an outdoor cook station and a fire pit. Too bad it was too cool to use the pool. Darcy is so gracious and considerate. Everything was supplied--including shampoo and toiletries, paper towels--and even laundry detergent. She even provided dog treats so we could make friends with her little dogs. We shall return!
Yes, the property was as described, even better!
We arrived to a warm and welcoming cottage stocked with treats, fruit, coffee, tea and more! Our dog, Savannah, even had her own treat basket! Could not have felt more welcomed!
The gardens were beautiful and the house was a pleasant atmosphere to come home to at the end of a day of hiking and exploring.
Wonderful to sit on the porch sipping a glass of wine, visit and review the exceptional day we had had and plan the next.
Being a person who enjoys to cook I especially appreciated the kitchen and it's amenities.
Darcy could not have been nicer, more accommodating and helpful!
Many thanks! We look forward to our next stay!
You will appreciate all of the special touches this cottage offers: a very comfortable and spacious one bed room cottage that feels like a mountain chalet, babbling brook outside, busy bird feeders, porches, full use of the yard and pool (which I look forward to on my next trip), WiFi and entertainment. Darcy is very attentive and ensures you have all you need for your stay! The location is easy to access, close to all you would need and on a private road that follows a local park and creek (great dog walking down to the creek). A little slice of heaven in Chico! Enjoy! Anne
I cannot say enough good things about our weekend at the Cottage by the Creek. The house was clean and complete with all the amenities that we could possibly need. Darcy was a wonderful host and had the kitchen stocked with fresh fruit, eggs, bread, snacks and drinks upon our arrival. We were in town for a wedding and we stopped back at the cottage between the wedding and the reception with a few friends and we all enjoyed cocktails on the porch while our pup enjoyed the large backyard. The cottage is in a great location and was very close to all of our destinations over the weekend. We highly recommend this property to anyone who is traveling to Chico (especially those traveling with pups!).
We had such a nice stay at this VRBO. I was most impressed with all of the food that was left for us! Fresh bread, lots of snacks and chocolates...and the fridge was stocked with a few drinks, eggs, and peanut butter. The bed was super comfy...my husband's favorite part... My son was in heaven...between the fruit snacks and the doggies. ;-) A short walk to CSU Chico and downtown and lots of restaurants. We will definitely come back!
Cottage by the creek is a quirky little place with an eclectic interior and exterior. Despite being close to campus housing, it was very quiet. Everything that could possibly be provided was, including food in the fridge and snacks. Darcy and her "weiner dogs" could not have been more friendly. We had a wonderful stay.
The Cottage by the Creek is within walking distance to the Chico State baseball fields and graduation ceremonies and is exactly one mile to town (and 1-1/2 miles from Bidwell Park). The neighborhood is quiet and a mecca for biking and walking. Bidwell Avenue is fronted by Big Chico Creek.
The Saturday Farmer's market is a year-round event and a must do for all visitors. During the summer months there is also a Thursday night farmer's market downtown with added vendors for dinner.
Our downtown does not have a bad restaurant! We have all types of food, and a restaurant that isn't good will not last a month, so they are all fantastic!
Sierra Nevada Brewery is another popular attraction and is only a little further from town - probably 3 miles from the Cottage.
There are many wineries in the area and there is a special two-day tour of all of them sometime in April.
The Cottage has magazines, maps, and brochures depicting these attractions and more!
