The Hideout was recently remodeled; One flight of stairs takes you to our hillside home which offers four bedrooms and two full baths are on the second floor, one bedroom boasts a private deck. The main floor offers an open, sunny eat-in kitchen, half bath, large open family room, a lake view sitting room plus a cozy den. The expansive deck is directly off the kitchen with views of the lake, has an outdoor gas grill and is the perfect place for kids to play. The perfect vacation home for you and your family.
The owners are both in the entertainment industry and live in LA. He spent many years in Chicago, and his family owned the home next door. When presented with the opportunity to buy The Hideout for themselves, they jumped at the opportunity. They now own both homes and are now working on completely rehabbing the home next door (The Lookout- stay tuned...) to offer the opportunity for large groups to be able to stay close together.
Kerry Brown purchased this house in 2010
The homeowners love the feeling of stepping back in time when they come back. Enjoying summer like they did in their childhood when the days lasted forever and every day offered new, magical adventures...
Homemade root beer at Carlson's, the intimate Michigan City Zoo, building the ultimate sand castle, the lighthouse framing Chicago's skyline during beautiful sunsets, plus endless new opportunities!
This should not be labeled as a lake view/lake front property! It is 2 blocks to the beach, and you can only catch glimpses of the water from a few places on the property. There were a few maintenance issues with the house (door handle to porch, deck furniture, deck itself was sagging outside the kitchen door). Some of these were mentioned in other reviews but not addressed. This is not a house for the weak-hearted. There were many steps both from the parking in the back to the house, as well as from the house to the street. The rest of the house was fine, but we booked it because it said lake views. That was extremely disappointing!
We recently stayed at The Hideout for a week with friends and our five children aged 1-6. There were 9 of us in total and we had plenty of space. We had a fabulous time! We enjoyed the hot tub, the proximity to the beach, zoo and playgrounds. There was plenty of room inside and out for the kids to play and grown ups to relax. The house had everything we needed including much appreciated beach towels. The property manager responded quickly with the door code when we arrived. There are two spaces behind the property for parking. The exterior is weathered but that added to the charm and the interior well decorated and homely. With small children we fashioned some baby proofing blockades for the wrap around decking and steps and all was fine. We enjoyed the BBQ and outdoor eating area most nights too. The steps make this property inaccessible for wheelchair users but no problem for small children if you have hands for carrying little ones and a stroller if required. We really enjoyed our stay and would definitely recommend for other families looking for a city getaway.
Newly renovated house just a block from the beach. We rented this along with the Lookout for overflow sleeping. The deck and hot tub were nice after a day at the beach.
The location is a block and a half to the beach area where you climb a sand dune to reach the gorgeous beach. The view of the water is very little but you can see the water. The inside of the house is beautiful, the bedrooms very clean and neat. The living areas were comfortable and beachy. In the kitchen you will find what you need to prepare meals but you need to bring every grocery to make your meals.
My biggest disappointment and the reason for 4 stars was the outdoor areas. They are not well kept or clean. I would expect that for a house in this price range.
The location is just a couple blocks from zoo, parks, lighthouse. We spent our evenings walking down to park area to enjoy the beautiful sunset. It was a wonderful vacation.
First the good things: The house was spacious, clean, and comfortable. Kitchen was well stocked, maybe add an extra roll of paper towels and toilet paper. Short easy walk to the beach. I love the "old house" feel with tasteful decor.
The things that could have been better:
1. Better communication. I had to email to ask for the code to get in when we were less than
24 hours away from being there.
2. The batteries were dead for the remotes for one of the t.v.s.
3. Only one of the outdoor lights worked. Bad bulbs? No lights at all on the patio. It's very
dark up there. Had to use phone lights when coming in and out.
4. Poison Ivy growing through the steps to the house.
5. Door to the patio is broken, or at least we couldn't make it work.
6. Patio (including table and chairs) had not been cleaned for quite some time.
7. Brush along drive needs trimmed back. Hard to get through without scratching the
vehicle. We got out and broke off some branches as we had a rental vehicle and couldn't
afford damage.
With all that being said, we did enjoy our stay. Like I said, it WAS very CLEAN and COMFORTABLE. We were there for my son's wedding and did not have time to call the property manager to get these things taken care of. It may of been quickly fixed, just didn't have time.
A great location and wonderful homelike setting. Highly recommended!
This beautiful, private property offers water and beach fun at your fingertips including jet skis delivered to your beach. The house is walking distance to Washington Park which offers a zoo, small water park, restaurants, art museum, marina, fishing and more. Outlet mall, casinos, lots of antiquing and great restaurants in the very near vicinity.
