Oceanfront Classic in Harpswell
About Thomas Lunde
I am a professional painter and photographer. I race competitively on a New York 32, a 45 foot wooden boat, and day sail my Dark Harbor 17 1/2 (26 foot) gaff rigged sloop. I also own a 38 foot ocean worthy S&S Loki yawl. I worked and lived in New York City's Soho district but have moved my studio to Maine. We rent the house when we are traveling or racing.
Thomas Lunde purchased this House in 1984
Why Thomas Lunde chose Orr's Island
I was working in New York as design director of Newsweek Magazine and was looking for a second place out of the city. My sister managed the 19 Pabst trusts and told me about a home they wanted to sell. I drove to look at in February in '84 and when we drove up the driveway the Atlantic Ocean was revealed and I bought on the spot. It was a spectacular find as these houses are rarely for sale.
What makes this House unique
The location is ideal with 180 degree views to the East and South. From the western windows you can overlook the Cribstone Bridge-the only one of its kind in the world. It is almost like living on a boat but with bedrooms instead of berths, bathrooms instead of a head, and a kitchen (set into a Lord and Burnham greenhouse) instead of a galley. We've kept most of the mid-century furniture but updated the plumbing, heating, and appliances. There was an open porch when we bought it that we closed in with a wall of windows making it sunny and snug.
