About Helene Miller
Hello travelers! We found our property on Capri Drive in 2001 when it was only a sandy road. There are cousins that live all around us and that is how we learned about it. We spent most of our lives together in Springfield, PA where Charlie was a sporting goods store owner supplying the surrounding public and private schools, swim teams, club sports, etc with sports uniforms, equipment, shoes and everything in between. He made a dramatic career change in 2009 and went back to his alma mater Villanova University to become an English and Social Studies teacher. We moved to our cottage by the sea for a while where he taught high school in Flagler County but we were missing our 4 children and 15 grandchildren back in the Philadelphia area. So back we came where Charlie is now teaching in an urban school. We live in the West Powelton section of the city and love the urban life. I was a Jazzercise instructor for 25 glorious years until I went to a full time job while Charlie was back in school as well as being a full time mom, grandmom and caregiver for my own mother. Need I say more? I work part time also in the Philadelphia School District as an assistant in the younger grade classrooms and love it. We always miss our cottage by the sea when we are not there but are thrilled to share it with others and delight in hearing about your own experiences there if you like to share.
Helene Miller purchased this House in 2012
Why Helene Miller chose Avalon By Sea
We simply love Ormond by the Sea and, in fact, our little subdivision of 3 streets (Capri, Avalon and Via Madrid) is actually called Avalon by the Sea. It is peaceful and lovely there, a simple beach life not sullied by loud bars and boardwalk noises. Our home is positioned 300 yards from the ocean and 200 yards from the river and, in the quiet evenings, you can hear the ocean crashing onto the shore as you sit and relax in the breezeway. We named our home Somewhere Beyond the Sea because my mother just loved Bobby Darin and that was one of his signature songs. I just love having family within walking distance of us and, when we vacation there, we spend a lot of time together.
What makes this House unique
Our area is not crowded. It is an "Old Florida" feel-laid back, lots of open area with many areas designated as state lands and therefore cannot be built upon. We have a thriving community of activists who assist during the annual sea turtle migrations. The house is approximately 1.5 hours from Disney World and other Orlando attractions. Daytona Beach and the famous Speedway is a 15-20 minute drive, St. Augustine and New Smyrna Beach are both about 40 minutes drive (in opposite directions!). You can walk to the Lagerhead Restaurant at the top of the road for nightly music, happy hour, lunch, dinner and weekend breakfasts. The new Tanger shopping mall is opened in Daytona Beach right off of I-95. We designed our home to truly be a beach house. You will get that feeling as soon as you walk in. The house inspires relaxation and fun! The house has colored cement floors except for the master bedroom which has a high end wood tone laminate. Inside the showers is also a rustic cement. We simply love the breezeway and spend a lot of time there eating, relaxing, reading, etc. There is even a shower in the breezeway perfect for rinsing off after coming in from the beach. We call it the "inside-outside shower" :-) We love to cook and we have stocked the kitchen with that in mind. Whether you cook, grill on the propane/charcoal grill out back, order pizza or eat out, you will find everything you need in the kitchen.

We loved this beach house. It had everything we needed and was a short, convenient walk to the beach. The only complaint was the wi fi, which only worked about half the time. Other than that, everything was wonderful. We would definitely return!
Perfect Cottage by the Sea
This property provided the perfect respite for a month of exploring the Florida coastline. Charming cottage with lots of space and amenities. Located on a quite street that leads straight to the beach. Can't wait to plan the next stay...
Thank you so much, Rebecca! We really appreciate the review but, more importantly, are very happy that you enjoyed Somewhere Beyond the Sea. You definitely take the prize for longest distance traveled (You beat out Hawaii by a few miles!!) What an adventurous
family you all are. Please do come again. The Florida coastline needs more exploring ;-)

There are so many more items I could have checked off here that are within 1/2 hour of our home but Homeaway default is 15 minutes. The drive along A1A is pleasant, never a chore and we are not far from I-95 which gets you almost anywhere.
There are a number of fresh water springs to enjoy and go tubing. Blue Springs is the closest but I prefer Kelly Park in Apopka.
This gorgeous area has so much to offer. I can give you insights into so many wonderful restaurants, music and things to do. We have a wonderful world class science museum in Daytona called the Museum of Arts and Sciences. Within the last couple of years they opened the Cici and Hyatt Brown Museum of Art on the same premises which emphasizes the art of Florida artists. Small art festivals abound!
The Daytona Boardwalk offers free concerts at the Bandshell often with a fireworks show following.
Fishing, kayaking and manatee watching are huge here if that's what you like and there are many rental places and excursions available.
We provide fishing rods mounted in the garage and only ask that you clean and hang them back up when you leave.
If you like antiquing, you're in luck! Renningers in Mt. Dora is a gigantic indoor/outdoor antiques market with a few yearly events. Mt. Dora itself is a wonderfully quaint little place with lots of shops and restaurants. I can offer suggestions for this type of shopping if you are not into traveling too far from home base.
Daytona's world famous International Speedway is fabulous even if you are not into auto racing!! Great tours, opportunities to drive your own race car, see replicas of the greats. Right across the street is the brand new and super exciting One Daytona Shoppes featuring a gigantic Bass Pro Shop, Rockbottom restaurant and brewery, P.F. Changs, Cobb Luxury Theatres, and many, many more. The brand new Tanger Outlets are "mostly" open and many more will be coming there soon.
The beach, after all, is our favorite place to be and it is never crowded. Sometimes you have it all to yourself. Being only 300 yards from our house, it is so easy to just walk down for a quick swim then back for something to eat or take one of the coolers with you to spend the day.
