The very pretty fishing port of Ayamonte on the Spanish/Portuguese border is lined with street cafes, restaurants, tapas bars and nice boutiques. It's picturesque squares and park with small zoo are typical of an Andalucian town. Andalucia is renouned throughout Spain for it's flamenco, all year round fiestas and it's food and drink - notably seafood, tapas and sherry - The freshly caught fish and seafood in the restaurants at Isla Canela and Ayamonte is a must! Other nearby places of interest are Huelva, from where Columbus first sailed to the New World; El Rocio famous for it's annual pilgrimage; and Andalucian capital Seville (90 minutes drive), home of tapas, flamenco, Moorish architecture and so much more. For younger family members, on the road into Cartaya (approx 30 mins) you will find Kartodromo de Cartaya (Karting) open year round, and the very popular Aquapolis water park which opens normally the middle of June until first week in September.
The eastern end of the Portuguese Algarve is also worth a day trip or two. It is a beautiful and largely unspoilt region with lovely long sandy beaches, small fishing ports and villages. A little ferry from Ayamonte, or by car over a beautiful bridge, will take you across the Guadiana River, which separates Spain from the Algarve and Portugal. The 10 minute Ferry trip will take you to Villa Real de San Antonio (famous for pottery, linen & towels.) You can drive up to Alcoutim and enjoy lunch at this picturesque village. Monte Gordo is further into Portugal and numerous other villages follow. The attractive, historic town of Tavira is only 40 mins drive away and has a lovely square next to the river with a hilltop castle/gardens, churches and other ancient buildings. It is also lined with street cafes and restaurants. 45 mins over the border into Portugal, near to Faro, you will find the Aqualand water park and not far from there you will get a full day out at Zoo Marine.
The long pristine sandy beaches right on Isla Canela provide a base from which to enjoy the watersports for which the area is famous. If you do not want to try it yourself, you can just relax on the beach and enjoy the skillful gymnastics of the kite surfers and windsurfers. The beach bars all serve delicious food for lunch so you can easily stay for the whole day. There are marinas at Isla Canela & Isla Cristina where sailors of all abilities can hire boats to enjoy the Atlantic Coastline. You can also book Ocean and River cruises. The Andalucian area is a wildlife haven from the Marismas at Isla Canela to the National Park at Donana (45 mins drive). A little nearer (approx. 25 minutes) you will find the Crocodile Park (Terra Exotica) at Isla Cristina - a reptile breeding farm and sanctuary. Europe´s largest (Over 2000 reptiles) collection of Crocodiles, aquatic turtles and land tortoises, snakes and lizards are kept in breeding projects here.
We stayed at this apartment for 2 weeks in June 2012 and the location couldn't have been better. We thought we might need A/C but the place was always nice and cool due to it being shaded until about 2:30pm, and the total black out shutters are a great advantage too. There was only one night when we needed to use the fan and it worked a treat.
Apartment is well supplied in every department. Plenty of kids' games, cards, dvd player and tv. There's an ample sized kitchen with everything you need pretty much, and there's a separate area with a washing machine which came in quite handy towards the end of the holiday.
One great advantage of this cosy apartment is the balcony. It's a proper sun trap from mid-afternoon to sundown. Gardens are very well maintained and the area is quiet. Also very secure as the complex is gated. Pool is lovely. Great size with a life guard always on duty. Beach second to none, with numerous chilled out beachside bars and cafes.
One thing we would recommend is hiring bicycles, especially if you have a toddler, like us. We got them from a small tourist office beside the roundabout fairly inexpensively (7 euro for 2 bikes for 2 hours, I Think) and would cycle into Ayamonte one day, down to the marina the next. Cycle paths take you about 3 miles in each direction. Oh, and the free outdoor zoo in Ayamonte, just next to Supersol is worth a visit. Our wee one loved it!
For takeaway food, when we didn't fancy cooking, we picked up tapas and pizzas from the Atlantis bar at the front. Very cheap and tasty. Staff are so friendly.
Hoping to come back in Feb 13.

My wife and I and my two children went to this wonderful apartment in Isla canela.
It is as it looks in the pictures. You have the sun in the early afternoon all the way until it disapears at night so if you want to sunbathe on the balcony you have hours of that precious sun. All I can say is you will be delighted staying in this apartment. It was very clean and very tidy, bathroom and kitchen superb, the apartment makes you feel at home it,s so lovely and quiet.Big bedrooms too.
The people that were on the complex in other apartments are very friendly and helpful, the swimming pool has a guard all day long, the gardens maintained daily, tennis courts are ace.
There is a shop or mini market and has enough food for a short stay a week or so!
The main town has bigger shops only 20mins by bus and buses are regular.
A few excellent bars and resturants around food for all ages and most Spanish people speak english. The beach well if there were 6 stars out of 5,the beach the sand and the sea great, swimming the sea, sunbathing brilliant 10 out of 10. We will go again next year...Amazing Place.........
We had a fantastic holiday when staying at this appartment. The appartment itself was spotless and had everything you need on a holiday. It was very comfortable as well and couldn't be faulted. The terrace area was ideal for sitting out watching the evening sunset. The fact the appartment is just across the road from the beach is another wee bonus.
The complex it was in was very peaceful and had superb facilities. The pool area was great with plenty of loungers and a large pool. There is also a full size tennis court for when it is not too hot.
The town had everything you need with a good choice of restaurants and a few bars and there was a really good feel to the place. As for during the day the beach is just breathtaking and so large it never felt too busy either. There are also plenty of different places nearby if you fancy a change one night but there never really felt the need!
All in all a really relaxing, great holiday in a lovely appartment in a great place. We have been back since our first visit and hopefully be back again soon!
We were here in April 2010 with friends and had a great time. The apartment has everything that you could possibly need on holiday even down to the selection in games and books. The balcony gets the afternoon and evening sun which is great. It overlooks the tennis courts, play area and lovely well maintained gardens. It is wihin a few minutes walk to a lovely big sandy beach and some really nice restaurants and bars.
Handy for the town of Ayamonte and from there you can take the quick ferry ride over the river to Portugal to another lovely little town.
Would certainly book again.
I enjoyed staying in this appartment as it is in a secure complex with a
tennis court and large swimming pool and it is very near to the beautiful wide sandy beach. There is a good variety of restaurants
close by and the town of Ayamonte is a short car or bus journey away
where there are many cafes bars and restaurants and shops and from Ayamonte a ferry can take you across to Portugal. The area is
very flat which is ideal for cycling and cycles can be hired at the marina. I have stayed here at least twice a year since I have discovered this location.
Apartamento muito bem localizado, a cerca de 30m da praia, em condominio fechado com piscina e campo de ténis. Próximo de vários restaurantes de praia / "Chiringuitos".
Optimo para férias tranquilas.
Isla Canela is located in the beautiful and unspoilt Costa De La Luz in the south west of Spain near the Portuguese border in the area known as the Spanish Algarve. It is 50 minutes from Faro airport and 90 minutes from Seville airport, both of which are well served by UK airports. The area has 5 miles of sandy beaches, a marina, an 18 hole golf course, 4 star hotels, and a selection of restaurants all within a exceptional setting. It also has a climate that boasts 3,000 hours of sunshine a year. The local town of Ayamonte is the ideal place to discover the real Spain.
