This is a 46 m2 newly renovated family owned cottage ideally located in South Iceland. This unit will not be rented out 2015
We, Þuríður (Thury) and Sigurdur (Siggi) are a married couple for 49 years, have four girls and 9 grandchildren, we are born 1945 and 1949. We are partly retired. Our land property is 140 hectares = 345 acres. We bought the property 17 years ago and started to build a summer cottage. We have now build a living house and are staying here all year round.
Our land is 50% naturally grown woodland of wild Icelandic willow and mountain birch. In the other half we have planted more than 100.000 tree seedlings, mostly Alaska Pine, Alaska Spruce, Siberian Larch, Icelandic birch and Rowan.
Sigurdur Olafsson purchased this cottage in 1995
We are very found of our land, in our eyes it is the most beautiful spot in the world. It is sheltered but have great view over a beautiful Icelandic countryside. If we take a walk few hundred meters up on the hill above us we have a panorama view inland and of the two big glaciers in the south; Mýrdalsjökull and Vatnajökull.
Our property is ideally located if you like to explore south east Iceland. West boundaries of Vatnajökull National Park is only 30 km to the north of us and stretches more than 300 km to the east. Bus stops only few hundred meters away every morning, driving the mountain trail to Eldgjá and Landmannalaugar and comes back same evening. All major attractions in the south east are within 1 1/2 hour drive from us.
This is a great place to stop on the way around Iceland, or if you want to be away from it al for some days. It is less great if you want to go to Skaftafjell for several days, as it really takes some time to go back and forth (more than what you'd think from the map). Beautiful new cabins, very clean and with all amenities - everything was very lovely and 5 stars for this! However, the cabins are priced high for something that is so remote. Check the link in the email is sent to you! We did not, as we just read the instructions in the email saying they are off road 704 something (I can't recall). We did not realize it would be several roads in from the ring road. There is not even a sign (just signs for other cottages). We had a very hard time and spent 2 hours at night going back and forth on the ring road, trying to locate them. Had to stop at a hotel who tried to help us. The GPS location we received from the owner sent us into the Atlantic! Finally, my advice to the owners: Set up a PayPal account so that it's much easier to pay you. I explored paying them over some American transfer link that they sent, but this requires you setting up an account, providing passport information over the web, which is too cumbersome, and I don't want to have to send copies of my passport online to some American firm. Bringing cash was a huge hassle, as I had to take out cash at home over several days, and then pay to have it exchanged. If you run a business, please make it easier for your customers to pay and find you. :)
Giljaland is a wonderful escape and Siggi is the most perfect host.
The cabin (G42) was wonderfully cosy, clean and homely - It had everything we needed for a relaxing stay.
Our children loved wondering around the site, playing with Siggi's dog, meeting the horses and the chickens.
There are numerous activities and wonderful places to visit in the area and a 4x4 opens up a world of possibilities.
We would love to come again!!!
We stayed at the cabin for a week and found it very beautiful and cosy. As an FYI: when you come off route 1, read the blue maps and follow the road to Skaftatunga. The road is a gravel road and can be quite bumpy, and full of big holes (as are a lot of roads in Iceland!) so a you will need a big-ish car (not the city sprinter we had!)
We stayed in the largest cabin on site, it has three bedrooms (two with a double bed, one with a bunk) as well as the sofa and a couple of single Z beds. We were just the two of us and found it just enough space for us two but we do like a lot of room to spread out. There’s a good sized wardrobe in one of the bedrooms, bedside tables and cupboards in the others. As with all Scandinavian countries, there are two smaller duvets instead of sharing one larger one (it’s a lot more comfortable) and there are plenty of spare cushions, blankets etc. The blinds are – mercifully – black out. The bathroom is lovely with a powerful shower. The living space is very comfortable – with a large sofa and dining table area. The TV is a good size and a few DVDs and books are available. The kitchen consists of a fridge with a freezer compartment (although it’s not suitable for storing food), an electric hob and microwave. We found this ample for our cooking which we did at the cabin nearly every evening (and we cook mostly from scratch). The terrace has stunning views over towards the east, with views of lots of little waterfalls going into a large river and you can also see parts of the glacier on top. Unfortunately, the wi-fi is not terribly good so only one device can access the internet at any time and it is very slow. To be fair we weren’t there for that so it wasn’t a big problem. However, in the bad weather neither the wi-fi nor the TV worked so we were stuck with playing cross-words and reading books. It would have been nice if there were some board games there too.
You can also take a walk from the cabin up to a weather station on a small peak (takes about an hour or so) where you can see the glacier very well and the valley in between the two plateaus of the national parks. The views are spectacular up there. The family horses might also visit!
The cabin is well located if you want to experience the glaciers at either Ejyafellajokull (1 hour drive) or Vatnajokull (2/3 hour drive), the waterfalls at Selfoss/Seljalandfoss (45 min drive) and everything else the South has to offer. It is easy to pick up hiking trails from here.
We stayed two nights in Giljaland 46 and it was such a nice place to relax after a long day of exploring! The photos capture the cottage really well. It was impeccably clean. The views out of the windows and from the property in general are breathtaking! The owners house is nearby but the cottage is situated so that there is lots of privacy. We initially had a problem connecting the Wifi and so walked over to their house. Sigurour was in Reykjavik at the time and Pury wasn't able to assist with that so she got Sigurour on the phone and we had it worked out very quickly! While there, we explored Vatnjokull National Park and hiked out to Skaftafell. We had it all to ourselves. We also drove out to the Glacier Lagoon and arranged for a guided tour for our family on Vatnjokull Glacier. If and when we ever are able to return to this part of Iceland, we would definitely stay here again and would highly recommend it for anyone exploring the South Coast!
We had a very great week at Giljaland. The farm itself is very calm and situated in a nice valley right in the central of south-east iceland. It's a perfect place to start nice walks just right away from the house. Also the highlands are quite nearby and accessible by the highland bus who passes right at the farm.
Walking up the little hill behind the house you can see Myrdalsjökull (Glacier) and the Laki ridge with the Eldgja canyon behind it. If you interested in the vulcanic history of this region I recommend the short video (available in different languages) about the eruption in the 18th century at the tourist information at Kirkjubaejarklaustur. But also all the other main important places are within a 1.5 hourse drive: Vik with its impressive cliffs (we saw a lot of sea birds and also the lovely puffins) and Myrdalskökull, Kirkjubaejarklaustur, Skaftafell national park and Vatnajökull, Jökulsarlon (glacier lake with iceberg) (boat trip is nice; visit the sea side - impressive, we saw seals; recommend the closeby Fjallsarlon which is not so busy).
The house itself is equipped with nearly everthing you need except an oven ;-). But Thuri and Sigi are always very helpful (e.x. laundry, suggestions for excursions, etc.). Even an internet access is available which is suitable to check and send emails.
Also we loved all the other farm "residents": Birta the family friendly sheep dog who accompanied us on our walks, the iceland horses (especially Bobo and Hamlet - takk fyrir again to Sigi for letting our daughter Josefine ride on Bobo), the sheeps, the chicken - thank you for the eggs.
Thanks again to Thuri and Sigi to share their dream with us.
Greetings from Germany from Jan, Nina & Josefine
