About Ginny Erwin

Hi, my grandparents bought and maintained this cabin for decades and my Dad, who's a builder, renovated it over a period of years and created the most wonderful place in which to relax and simply enjoy! Please come and 'take a load off' in this beautiful mountain cabin!

Ginny Erwin purchased this lodge in 1944

Why Ginny Erwin chose Burnsville

Family owned and managed. Sprawling yet cozy. Will accommodate huge groups. Situated in the gorgeous mountains of NC. "Away from it all", yet Asheville is an easy drive down 26, near the Blue Ridge Parkway, Mt. Mitchell: hiking and golf, close to Jonas Ridge Tubing, HVAC, Internet, DirectTV, Pool Table, Ping Pong, Treadmill, South Toe River, well stocked, Interesting atmosphere with an artistic combination of old and new, etc. Time slowly ticks up there; you'll unwind quickly, and have a wonderful time. Good sleep, hikes, fishing, fires, and food.

What makes this lodge unique

Incredibly well done with wonderful attention to detail, very well stocked and the home to many marvelous and happy vacations and reunions! You'll love it!

Guestbook comments from the owner

Hey, Erwins! We had a blast, yet again! The house is perfect for big groups; we had youth invite their families up the last day and the final count was 74 for dinner! Incredible house and grounds. We were bundled up all weekend, drank 4 boxes of hot chocolate, and still slept anyway! I always sleep so well up here! It's a wonderful place to spend time in the Word and study. The kids loved all the "nooks and crannies" and enjoyed the bridge to the island where they played "hide and go seek" and explored. We hope to return twice next year! Thanks and God bless you!

The perfect wedding retreat

  • 5 of 5

This cabin was absolutely perfect for our small wedding. We were looking for a place that had a lot of space and enough rooms/beds for our whole family to stay and this cabin sure did deliver. On top of being able to space out both inside and outside of the cabin there was a beautiful river (South Toe) in the back, after crossing the creek. We were fortunate to not have much rain on our trip but even with the little bit we saw there was an ample amount of space under the large covered decks. Ginny was so easy to work with and INCREDIBLY helpful while we were preparing for our stay. There are so many wonderful features about this cabin but I don't have the space in this comment to touch on them all. Just take our word for it-- this IS the hidden gem in Burnsville! <3

The best by far!

  • 5 of 5

We had a group of 8 adult couples - 7 of the 30-40 age group and 1 older couple. Children were left behind for this weekend, but what a great place to bring them back to sometime. Each couple had their own sleeping space which is something that we have had a hard time managing to find in the years that we have been taking this spring trip. The inside of the buildings were quite nice, but I think that it was the outdoor space that blew us away. So many chairs, rockers, hammocks, rope or wood chair swings. . . The covered area was huge and deck space amazing. We had a storm come through late one afternoon and it was so wonderful to be able to sit outside under shelter and just watch and listen to the sound of the thunder and the rain. The house was well stocked with necessities and lots of artwork on the walls of every room. The kitchen had an abundance of about everything you could need and the breakfast room was like eating in a little café with the five round tables and plenty of chairs for everyone. The detached game room was enjoyed by many of our group and there were plenty of options for entertainment that we just didn't have time to take advantage of.

The location of the cabin is terrific as well, being right at the base of Mt. Mitchell and the Black Mountain range. Stunning views all around and the South Toe River running by within earshot. Although not to the extent of Brevard area, there are a good number of beautiful and easily accessible waterfalls very nearby such as Crabtree Falls, Roaring Fork Falls, Setrock Creek Falls, Whiteoak Creek Falls, and Grassy Creek Falls - all well worth the time to visit. Burnsville and Spruce Pine (Bakersville too) aren't too close, but not too far away either and each has it's own charm. Linville Falls and gorge, Roan Mountain, and Grandfather Mountain are all an easy drive away and the beautiful Blue Ridge Parkway is just down the road. So many things to do and see and unfortunately for us/me, not enough time.

I'd be surprised if we didn't return to this wonderful getaway sometime very soon. After posting some photos of the place on Facebook, one of my daughters responded to a very positive comment by saying something to the effect that "we have stayed in a lot of different places, but this was by far the best!" That pretty much sums it up for us.

Beautiful cabin in the woods that helped us create memories that will last a lifetime!

  • 5 of 5

I stayed here with my six sisters, their families and my parents and we had an absolute blast! The weather was not what we were expecting (snow and rain) but the cabin was so vast, we never ran out of things to do or got cabin fever! We stayed busy cooking in the kitchen, playing in the game room, skipping stones on the creek, sitting next to the fire in the living room and on the spacious porch! So many precious memories made in just four short days. We cannot wait to return one day soon! Thank you, Ginny!

Amazing accommodations for large groups

  • 5 of 5

Our family spent a long weekend together celebrating two milestone birthdays. There was plenty of room for everyone to hang out together (especially by the outdoor fireplace, that is incredible!) and then there were plenty of quiet areas to escape to when needed. The kids enjoyed kick ball in the side yard and spent plenty of time exploring the woods by the river. We all enjoyed the slide (kids of all ages) and the game room was a great place for ping pong and pool. This property is awesome. We had a group of 18 and we had lots of space to spread out. We all left looking forward to an opportunity to visit again when our schedules will allow. Ginny is great to work with and has thought of everything to make your visit comfortable and relaxing. You can definitely see the love that has been put into this property!

This cabin has been in our family since the '40s and about 15 years ago, my dad who is a very gifted builder made this special place his priority. He artistically combined old and new and created a large cabin, that maintains a cozy and warm environment. Come get lost in 'The Ritz on the South Toe' and you'll understand what I'm failing to adequately describe.

The grounds are most beautiful in peak season (September, October and early November), but it's a nice place to unwind year round as fire places are tucked in throughout and make awesome blazes whether for warmth or ambiance, find a hammock and spend an afternoon dozing, decks are many and hummers are too, outside sleeping opportunities make for an awesome experience on clear nights, grilling on an open fire, sitting around enjoying serene settings, good food with friends and family, a night of darts, board and card games, hide and go seek, a fabulous slide, a sand box, pool table, ping pong, a climbing wall, treadmill, theater room, 5 TVs, horseshoes, football, Frisbee, warm reading nooks, beautiful strolls, strenuous hikes, perching in the river, floating the river.. My favorite thing to do in summer months, is to put tubes in at the Carolina Hemlock Campground which is about 5 miles down Highway 80, and spend a few hours floating to our river dock! There isn't a better way to enjoy a warm afternoon!

This home stole my heart ages ago, and I promise it'll steal yours, too!

For the more adventurous who want to get off the property -

- Hike to and enjoy waterfalls at the end of White Oak, and tackle a trail or two at Mt. Mitchell; nearby National Parks

- Kayak, Tube, Canoe, and Swim

- Bike and run Hannah Branch and Seven Mile Ridge, numerous nearby trails, or the Blue Ridge Parkway

- Fish, & return to our outdoor fireplace to grill what you catch!

If you like to explore neighboring towns, head into nearby Burnsville or Spruce Pine for an afternoon or evening.

- Farm Tours, Farmer's Markets & Agritourism of all kinds

- U-Pick Fruit - including heritage apples native to the area; there are also apple trees on our property, that you're welcome to pick in-season

- Shopping & Antiquing

- Wineries & Craft Breweries

- Visit Artist Studios & Galleries - Shop for Fine Craft; go on a hunt for quilt art

- Studio Tours (pottery, glass, basketry, metal, fibers and more!) - close to the house on Highway 80 is a great little studio, and there's another in Micaville that I recommend.

- Take a class at Penland ( 1 week, 2 week and intensive courses available)

- Visit Yancey Theater - $6 a person for a current movie in an old-style theater

- Festivals or outdoor concerts make for a fun afternoon or evening activity.

Locally - Burnsville is a quaint town just 12 miles from the cabin, and it's there that you'll find a myriad of beautiful sites, yummy restaurants, mom and pop shops, and nice people!

- My favorite stop is Snap Dragon, which is an awesome restaurant that boasts great atmosphere; go see for yourself. I definitely recommend going there for dinner and a cocktail or two while in the area.

- Bubba's has a good bowl of chili and great environment! I've watched many a ballgame from my table there.

- Pig and Grits is a new fav that I've recently discovered! You can get a little bit of everything there! Good ole home cookin'!

- Rio is excellent Mexican in an authentic and clean environment!

- Starbucks is a common stop for my crew!

Also close by is Spruce Pine, which is 1 of the best-kept secrets in the area; it was voted "One of the Coolest Small Towns Around" by Romantic Asheville! Spruce Pine is a small town feel, super friendly with beautiful scenery and lots of locally owned, family run businesses.

Just 15 miles away from the cabin, the historic downtown area is a place to which to retreat for a nostalgic walk through time. Aside from the typical small town experience, you can go to the park, which has a pool, playground, and a put-in for canoes and tubing. It's a great spot for playing, picnics, and fishing.

Some favorite dining stops include The Knife and Fork, Spoon, which is a gastro pub, Mountain View, The Pizza Shoppe, The Fox and the Fig, Lower Street Tavern, The City Drive-in, Foxfire Restaurant and Bar, Bonnie & Clyde's, DT's Java, etc!

- Rock Hounding for gems (area is known for emeralds) and minerals

- Visit the National Mineral Museum

- Sightseeing - Drive the Blue Ridge Parkway!
