The Skiing

You can ski over to Les Arcs via the Vanoise Cable Car .

I would estimate that from my apartment , it would take a proficient skier 1 Hour 15 minutes to be in Les Arcs as long as you know the way !

About La Plagne & its Surroundings

A fantastic choice for all abilities, with 425km of piste ranging from pretty tree lined areas to high altitude glaciers.

This extensive ski area is in the Tarentaise valley of the French Alps - a fantastic choice for all abilities, with 425km of piste ranging from pretty tree-lined areas to high altitude glaciers. Its two main resorts are linked by the impressive 200-plus-capacity Vanoise Express gondola which crosses from one resort to another in just 7-10 minutes, bringing a host of activities within reach.

La Plagne is made up of 6 high altitude resorts located in the Tarentaise area of the Northern Alps: Aime la Plagne (2100m), Belle Plagne (2050m), Plagne Villages/Soleil (2050m), Plagne Bellecôte (1930m), Plagne Centre (1970m) and Plagne 1800 (1800m).

The Paradiski ski area spans both the picturesque Les Arcs and La Plagne, so is an ideal destination for particularly families, but also skiers of all abilities. This makes for a great family holiday together where the kids can learn at their own speed and be kept active and entertained whilst parents and adults sample some of the fantastic village-style resorts and the superb skiing Paradiski has to offer. There's an array of après activities to keep you entertained throughout the week too for when the night falls.

All 6 villages are linked by free public transport between 8am and midnight.

La Plagne has a top lift on a snowsure glacier at 3,250m and pistes that go all the way down to 1,250m. It has 225km of marked runs of its own and a double-decker cable car link to another 200km in and around neighbouring Les Arcs, together forming the giant Paradiski area, served by 132 lifts.

La Plagne is made up of no less than 10 separate villages scattered across a giant and largely gentle plateau alongside a steep mountain.

The ski area best suits lower intermediates and families looking for plenty of wide and gentle slopes, It’s not ideal for experts but still has sufficient off piste, steep couloirs and 1,000m-plus descents to lure a number of daredevils.

Much of La Plagne's local ski area is on a gentle plateau made up of wide, undemanding slopes way above the treeline. As these descend into the forest on the south and north faces, they become steeper.

Towering over this largely beginner and intermediate playground is the 3,417m summit of Bellecôte, the starting point for some difficult couloirs and long off-piste descents. Add to this the spectacular cable car link to Les Arcs, the Vanoise Express that spans a valley 1,800m wide and 384 deep, built at a cost of €15 million and opened in 2002, and you have the enormous Paradiski area.

La Plagne's most distant outcrop is Champagny-en-Vanoise. It's possible to travel from here across half a dozen valleys all the way to the outskirts of Villaroger at the far end of the Les Arcs area. However, it's not worth the frustratingly long time spent on lifts rather than actual slopes. If on a week's holiday it makes sense to make just a single day's foray to Les Arcs and instead concentrate on the substantial amount of slopes La Plagne has to offer.

Experts will head immediately for the 2,700m Roche de Mio and the Bellecôte Glacier beyond. The south face has the easier terrain, a warm-up for the stomach-churning traverses and couloirs of the north face. The services of a guide are absolutely essential here.

The resort has two snowparks: the one at Belle Plagne has two separate zones for different levels of skill. Le Petit Park, reached by the Col de Forcle button lift is for novices while Le Grand Park, at the top of Belle Plagne, has four routes with around 20 rails and tables as well as an air-bag and a boardercross course.

The resort has an extra-curricular draw of a 1,500m long Olympic bob run with 19 bends which you can take a ride down on a taxi or racing bob for a modest fee (la-plagne.com for info).

Apres Ski

The fragmented nature of the resort limits the nightlife and a large percentage of family guests means La Plagne is not famed for its après. Belle Plagne is the liveliest of the villages.

In Plagne 1800, La Mine Bar is a traditional English pub – but with a mining theme, complete with lamps and old mining tools on display. There are DJs and regular live music, as well as live sport on tv.

Le Saloon (lesaloonbelleplagne.fr) bar, pub and club in Belle Plagne is Wild West themed and the resort's late-night disco (open until 5am) – in fact it's the only venue La Plagne has to offer that comes close a club.

Igloo Igloo, inside Galérie du Pelvoux in Plagne Centre, is a funky little bar with DJs, live bands and a good choice of homemade cocktails. The white seats are draped with fur rugs inside the igloo-shaped room, and there are(half life-sized) polar bears and penguins on display to complete the icy theme.

Mountain Biking (MTB/VTT) in La Plagne

Les Arcs and La Plagne are two of the best downhill mountain biking sites in Europe. The riding is challenging, the views are spectacular and the long tracks just keep flowing! Probably a resort best suited to intermediate/advanced riders, you’ll find plenty of demanding technical trails and steep downhill plummets. (NB: In French, mountain biking is called VTT. (Vélo tout-terrain!))

What to Expect Mountain-biking in La Plagne

La Plagne itself has over 200km of dedicated MTB trails comprised of 18 different routes, the longest of which offers a 22km descent from the top of the Roche de Mio (2700m) all the way down to Monchavin/Les Coches (1250m). In total there are 8 downhill trails, 6 endro and 4 cross-country routes and if you're thinking of including Les Arcs in your trip, then you'll find even more downhill, cross-country and single track routes over there.

Monchavin and Montalbert have 3 enduro trails each and you can also use the Télécabine de Champagny to access more MTB routes on that side. From the top of the cable car you will find 3 tracks leading down through the Piste des Bois to Champagny, either in the direction of the Col de Forcle or Mont de la Guerre. There are also a number of trails alongside the Doron river, ranging from 'do-able by all' to a greater challenge for the more hardcore biker.

The following lifts are open to bikers during the summer:

•Télésiège de la Roche

•Télécabine de la Roche de Mio

•Funiplagne Grande Rochette

•Télésiège de Montchavin

•Télésiège de Plan Bois

•Télésiège de Montalbert

•Télésiège du Fornelet

•Télécabine de Champagny

•Vanoise Express

Great for Mountain Biking out of Ski Season

Our 2nd Home

  • 5 of 5

As a family we have a rule that the world is too big to go back to the same place twice! Failed miserably on this place, this was our 5th stay in this apartment, and strongly suspect it won’t be our last. We love the place. Great communications from Harvey the owner, and brilliant service from Audrey in the resort.

December week at Cret Cote

  • 5 of 5

Lovely apartment at Crete Cote. Near bus stop, experts can ski to and from the hamlet in favourable snow conditions.

There's a warm ski room at the entrance.

The striking feature of the apartment is the large balcony with amazing views over the valley.

The apartment is accessed from a steepish roadway up from the bus stop, and then down steel stairs past the ski room and into a hall, then downstairs to the apartment. In December the bus up and down is hourly.

The ski room and the front door are accessed via a combination keypad lock.

There is a separate w/c room and a bathroom with shower and bath. There is also a small washing machine which is very useful for a longer stay.

The heating is by electric room heaters which respond quickly to ensure a cosy living space.

There is satellite TV and a music centre.

There is a wide twin bedroom off the lounge and a narrow double bunk bedroom off the hall.

La Plagne has amazing skiing for all abilities. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay.

Owner's Response: Many thanks for reviewing your recent stay at my property. I am please to hear that it met all your expectations and although you didn't mention the kitchen in your review, from our conversation, I believe you found the kitchen with its full size cooker and oven, fridge/freezer, microwave, dishwasher and all the equipment needed to produce good homemade food to be of equally high standard

Excellent, spacious and comfortable. Would revisit

  • 5 of 5

Everything one needs (we self catered a lot). Comfy beds - even the sofa bed pull out, which I used. Noisy clock (I took the batteries out) and hopeless cutlery holder that traps knives are the only things i found at fault. We had good snow conditions (big dump the week before we went) and so could ski in and out to the chalet (some tricky pathways for the unadventurous skier). Loved it and will almost certainly go again. Resort has lots of blues but some reds/blacks to challenge. A couple of bottlenecks are a bit frustrating at busy times but did not prevent us enjoying the skiing immensely.

Beautiful Tranquil Alpine location (Nr. La Plagne)

  • 5 of 5

I spent a week in this chalet over the Easter Holiday, the quality of the accommodation was very good. Modern bathroom, well finished with plenty of hot-water (great for reviving sore muscles after a hard day on the slopes). Cosy feel, reasonably sized kitchen & wonderful views from the large balcony, overall very comfortable.

A real home from home

  • 5 of 5

We had all the information and help we needed. The directions we're spot on to the door. As we were arriving very late, the manager, Kate was in contact all the way.

My first impression of the apartment was good, it was clean and roomy. It was not until we woke the next day we realised how nice the place was. We've stayed in quite a few places and this was one of the best, especially on our budget, great value for money. The kitchen very usable, unlike the normal, two ring, tiny kitchen, can't cook for four or more type. Plenty of room for us to move about. Free wifi worked great. Digital TV was worked great but didn't use it much as the snow was fantastic especially for that time of year. The access to the slopes is about one minutes walk to s track leading to the bottom of a red run. So maybe not so good for novices but next to the entrance to the track is a bus stop with regular stops, always on time. About 10 mins to the centre. Overall the apartment was perfect, great location and view , suiting our needs. A real home from home.

Warm and comfortable.

  • 5 of 5

The apartment at Crete Cote was perfect for our needs and in a beautiful location. It was warm and comfortable with plenty of hot water and a proper kitchen area with full size oven and dishwasher. Sadly I can't vouch for the view as we didn't have the best weather but I know it was out there somewhere!

Harvey and Kate were very helpful, responding immediately to any communication.

The shuttle bus is free and runs every hour but we just took our car up to Plagne Centre each day which made getting around very easy.

Would highly recommend if you are looking for somewhere with space and facilities and don't mind being able a little bit out of the resort.
