Almyrida is considered to be one of the finest holiday destinations in Greece. Almyrida situated 22 kilometres far from Chania, at the East, within a cove at the mouth of the Souda bay. Almyrida is a small beautiful village by the sea, with 133 permanent residents. Almyrida has two sandy beaches, fully organised with umbrellas, loungers and a lifeguard, while there is also a third beach with pebbles just before the village.The beaches of Almyrida are awarded with a Blue Flag every year, showing that the sea is clean and that the beach provides the necessary safety features and customer service facilities.

Panos apartment is located next to Almyrida sandy beach, only 10 metres away, with fantastic sea view. The apartment is full-furnished: 3 air-conditions, Wi-Fi Internet, Satellite TV, DVD-CD player and a small selection of books are available to you. Also food seat and cot are available for babies. It is consisted from 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, the living room with fantastic sea view, the sitting-room, a fully equipped kitchen with crockery, cooking and eating utensils and a backside balcony with mountain view. From summer 2016, a NEW ROOF GARDEN 75 sq.metres was built with fantastic sea view, mountain view and Almyrida village view!!

Next to the apartment, there is "UCPA" company for water sport facilities. Wind-surfing and other extreme sports can be found in abundance at UCPA company. Also, mountain bikes can be hired from UCPA. At 'Francoise cafe', the most famous cafe in Almyrida, you should taste the delicious breakfast! In the village there are a couple of mini markets, pharmacy, cafe, bars, restaurants with fantastic Cretan food, gifts shops, grocery and bakeries stores. There is also a small taxi rank and a daily bus service to Chania.

There are many places to visit nearby such as Kalives (3km), Gavalochori (4 km) and Plaka (1 km). Kalives is a working village as well as being a tourist destination. So in addition to the beaches, tavernas, bars & tourist shops there are local shops plus a good-sized supermarket. Banking, post office and petrol station are available.

However, most people seem to totally relax into the calm of this delightful Apokoronas village. About 25 minutes away from Almyrida you will find Lake Kourna, the only natural lake in Crete, an idyllic place to enjoy a day out.

Chania - a cosmopolitan city voted the most beautiful on Crete. With the White Mountains as a backdrop, its Venetian harbour, museums, fascinating indoor market & an old quarter of narrow streets packed with interesting shops, Chania offers something for most visitors. Chania is 25 kilometres away from Almirida village.

Crete has much to offer, sightseeing, archaeological sites, the lovely beaches of Falassarna, Elafonissi and Balos which are all within easy driving distance. The famous Samaria Gorge, and many other wonderful Gorges & walks in the countryside are another option.

FLIGHTS NEWS: Chania has an international airport with scheduled flights year round and abundant charter flights serving much of Europe. Low cost Flights with Ryanair from Frankfurt, Glasgow, Roma, Brussels (Charleroi), Dusseldorf, East Midlands, Leeds (Bradford), London (Stanseed), Milan, Oslo, Pisa, Paphos, Stockholm, Wroclaw etc. to Chania airport and with Easyjet from London Gatwick to Chania airport. Also Low cost Flights with Condor from Dusseldorf, Frankfurt Int, Munich, Stutgard to Chania airport. For the remainder of the winter moths it is possible to fly via Athens or Thessaloniki, with daily flights throughout the year to and from Athens operated by: AEGEAN AIRLINES to both Heraklion and Chania RYANAIR between Athens and Chania/Thessaloniki and Chania.

You can take the bus from the airport to Chania city or the taxi. Ferries sail to and from Athens (Pireas) daily - the port for ferries for Chania is at Souda, a few kilometres away. When the ferry arrives, if you manage to scamper onto the bus in time, this will take you to Chania.

CAR NOT ESSENTIAL - beach is only 10 metres walking distance. A car is only essential if you would like to explore the Island. Almyrida has everything to offer for fantastic holidays!

we enjoyed staying in the appartment in Almirida very much. Frequently we sat behind the window - protected from the windy weather - and enjoyed the sea view. We also liked this small and silent place Almirida.



The apartment was very comfortable furnished. It was a good service that you changed towels and bedclothes after one week. It was also comfortable to have available dish liquid, soap, toilet tissue, paper towels in the kitchen and additional towels and bedclothes.For two people the apartment seemed to be perfect.

You must stay here!!

We had a fabulous 7 night stay in this beautiful apartment. It was so well equipped, in a perfect location, and Panos was the ultimate host.

The apartment is situated right in the middle of Almyrida and as close as you could possibly get to the sea. It had everything we needed and more and was extremely comfortable. Panos was there to greet us (and also to bid us farewell when it was time to leave) and left us with lots of essential provisions and some treats including a bottle of Raki and some of his delicious home produced Olive Oil to take home with us! He also remained in contact throughout the week, regularly checking that all was well.

The view from the large sitting room window is amazing, but the icing on the cake is the amazing roof terrace where we spent a lot of our time soaking up the sun and admiring the stunning landscape. As well as sun beds and a lovely shaded seating area, there is a BBQ and kitchen so great for al fresco cooking and eating, and the outdoor shower helped to keep us cool.

The apartment was spotlessly clean and we were left with spare sets of bed linen and towels.

The location simply couldn't be better. The apartment is above the lovely Cafe Francoise who do great breakfasts and right next to a friendly water sports business where we hired a pedalo. Several small supermarkets are only minutes away on foot, selling everything we needed, and the local bakery was fabulous for fresh bread, delicious Greek pastries and iced coffees!

Almyrida is lined with lots of lovely restaurants, we were really spoilt for choice, and most of them have first class views of the sea and even tables on the beach!

The sea was so beautifully warm and clear and a real pleasure to swim in, and so safe for children as it remains shallow until quite far out.

A bus runs regularly in to Chania and there is an excellent taxi business in the village, so we had no need to hire a car.

Thank you Panos for a first class holiday - we can't wait to return!

Great village location

Visited Panos' apartment for 7 days with my partner and 2 Girls, 12 and 9.

Really pleased with what we saw. Fantastic location right in the heart of the village. The roof terrace was our favourite part of the apartment for the way it is styled and the great sea views.

Inside the apartment itself has everything you need for a self catering style holiday .

We ate out every night as plenty of reasturants within the village to chose from.

We didn't hire a car and found everything we needed in terms of grocceries within walking distance of the apartment.

Nice beaches, very safe for children and families.

Panos was extremely helpful throughout our stay which was very much appreciated by us all. We wish him well and hope to return again next year.

Meets every requirement

Fantastic holiday in Alymidra, the apartment meets all requirements, with the roof terrace being the icing on the cake. We spent most of our time on the terrace, the view is brilliant and the sunset phenomenal. Panos is a great host, we will definitely be back, Highly recommend.

Stunning roof terrace and views

We stayed for one week in Panos’ apartment in the village of Almyrida which had a perfectly quiet and laid-back atmosphere from 23 May. Firstly thanks to Panos for all his help in the booking stages. All questions answered timeously and he organised our transport to/from Chania Airport approx. 30 mins. Panos’ apartment is situated in the middle of the village 10 m from the beach. It was two smaller apartments very cleverly knocked into one . Two bedrooms and two bathrooms, with the addition of a sofa-bed and a very welcome arrival pack of bread, milk, fruit, wine, beer, croissants, tea, coffee, water. We had breakfast every morning beside a very large window which overlooked the beach restaurants and bay. The roof terrace however was simply stunning and very well designed with fantastic views over Souda bay , sun beds, a place to eat, a barbecue with sink and an outdoor shower. There was also a canopy to allow shelter from the sun if needed and we spent a lot of time there. Panos, thanks again for all your help and as I write this we are making use of the olive oil that you gave us as a parting gift. would definitely stay again if back in Crete.

Lovely apartment and terrace in friendly Almyrida

We stayed one week in Panos’ apartment in the beautiful village of Almyrida, approx 40 minutes east of Chania (by car). Almyrida offered a laid-back atmosphere in May, not too many tourists and the restaurants we tried were all very good. Panos’ apartment is situated in the middle of the village, 10 m from the beach. It was big, very clean and well equipped. Two separate bedrooms and two bathrooms, with the possibility to use a sofa-bed if you are more than four, a fantastic view from the living room. We really appreciated the newly built roof terrace with sun chairs, a place to eat, the possibility to have a barbecue and an outdoor shower. The terrace offers a breath-taking view over Souda bay and the White mountains (Lefka Oris) and we spent a lot of time there at different times. Panos is a very helpful and nice landlord who gave us information of what to do and where to go. He answered our mails very fast at all times. We will surely recommend Panos’ apartment .

Driving from Chania, a bit further east from Kalyves you arrive in Almyrida, with sandy beach and shallow waters. Almyrida offers sailing and windsurfing and has a little harbour, providing basic facilities for boats - and a good variety of shops.

Almyrida has a beautiful sheltered beach with Blue Flag status. There are a selection of tavernas. There is a 3-times-a-day bus service to Chania and local villages. Chania is the main town and is about 30 mins drive from Almirida. It is a good idea to hire a car so you can explore the area. Almirida has two hire car companies located in the centre.

Almyrida once a quiet fishing village rarely seen by travellers has turned during the last ten years into a holiday destination. The most important archeological sight of Almyrida is what remains of a three-aisled Basilica of the early Christian era (6th century AD), with its restored, extraordinary mosaic floors.

CRETAN FOOD

Olive oil: Crete has about 60 olive trees per inhabitant so olive oil (the only oil traditionally used in cooking) is one of the staple foods. Buy extra virgin oil, it will often be written in English on the labels. If you are considering buying some really good olive oil to take back with you, it is best to buy from a producer, not because it is cheaper but because you can find some really good oil. A place where you could look is the covered market in Hania: there are some good oils to be found there and you might be able to get a taste before buying. There are no big price differences between the best oils and poor quality ones.

Cheese: You will be able to find a reasonable variety of cheeses in the supermarkets but there are only a few types of Cretan cheeses, listed below:

Graviera: the name is a loose rendition of the word 'gruyere' and it is a little similar. This is the standard hard cheese and being of local production, there are many types and tastes. Taste before buying.

Myzitra: a fresh cheese made of ewe's milk. It can also be made of goats milk or mixed milk. This is the standard fresh cheese. A good goat's one will taste like these expensive French 'chèvre frais' that you can buy in good delis, at a fraction of the price.

Anthotiros: from the words 'anthos' and 'tiros' meaning 'flower' and 'cheese' it is a very mild, soft spring cheese made when the sheep pastures are still full of flowers. The closest cheese that I could compare it to is mozzarella although it is quite different.

Paximadi: It is an unusual staple food but it is not necessarily something that you would want to take back from your holiday as a present to someone: paximadi is the hard dry bread (it is baked, cut in slices and baked again) that peasants take to the fields and soften with a little water and olive oil.

Herbs: The first thing that always strikes me whenever I step off the plane on Crete is the smell of herbs, especially thyme, oregano and marjoram. The whole island smells of herbs and is covered in them. A few herbs are also found only on Crete, like 'diktamos' or Cretan dittany.

Honey: Crete has been an important honey producer for a good few thousand years and the honey is very good, especially the thyme honey. You can find honey in all the shops but it is better to buy it loose from a producer.

Meat: Not something that you would take back with you of course, but I would just like to mention that the meat here is supposed to be as good as it was in Northern Europe some decades ago, before industrial animal husbandry became the rule - this is according to an old German butcher who was here on holiday and told me so. Particularly noteworthy of course is lamb and goat's meat.

Fish: There is good fresh fish. The best place to buy it is in the covered market in Chania.

Local drinks: The local 'hard drink' is called 'raki' or 'tsikoudia' and is distilled from what is left over from pressing grapes. It is a pretty strong, pretty clean alcohol. Cretan wine is mainly home-made and rarely bottled.
