Booking this property was really simple and host Francis gave great direction for us to find. On arrival we couldn't have been more pleased as the house itself is laid out and finished better than even the pictures can show. The garden is huge and private with swings, trampoline, slide and climbing frame for children which our toddler (and his parents) enjoyed over our stay. There is even a games room with table football, doll's houses and mini trikes and cars that we got great use out across the week. Inside is so spacious yet homely with areas and snugs to enjoy a god book or relax and listen to some music. They kitchen had all mod cons and laid out that really brings the family together as it's so open plan with huge table that would allow you to entertain if the desire was there. A private sitting room with TV, Sky, DVD player and huge stereo is also at your disposal and more DVDs and choice than we could even attempt to get through. The location is superb with Duncannon, Arthurstown, Hook Head, Feathard-On-Sea all a short drive away. Dunbrody house is a must for foodies and they even accommodated our 2yr old which was for us all to enjoy. This house really is perfect for a chilled relaxing break, for large family get together or simply for group of friends to catch up and enjoy the surrounding area. Host Francis was very pleasant and we are already considering another week here towards the end of the year to enjoy yet more walks on the beach, the beauty of wexford and the pure enjoyment of staying here.
We rented this house to accommodate 5 adults, 1 teen and 1 child. It suited our needs with plenty of space for getting together and staying apart! The separate TV room was great for the kids as was the games room. Well stocked with everything you need, the house was as described and in the perfect location for exploring the beautiful countryside of the Hook peninsula and beyond. We did the three "Ws" - Wexford, Waterford and Wicklow and found several good restaurants to eat in. The Hollow just down the road, (walking but not staggering distance!) served a good seafood menu and steaks for those who are not fond of fish. We had a slight problem with the complicated heating/hot water system which was dealt with immediately by the pleasant and helpful owner. We would love to visit in the summer to take advantage of the beautiful Dollar Bay beach although the weather we experienced in April was dry and sunnier than we expected. If you are looking for a family sized property in a great location, look no further.
This is a large, very comfortable warm cosy house, that is as attractive as it looks in the pictures. There was loads of room for two families, a lovely garden, and its well stocked with equipment for self catering. The beds are very comfortable and there is also a pull out bed downstairs, which the kids would have loved had we found it before we were about to leave.
There is a lovely sunny deck with a barbecue, a great playroom with football, pool and croquet set. Loads of room outside for soccer and water fights!
We cooked most evenings in the house, and the appliances are very good quality and there is lots of room in the kitchen to store your supplies. The Centra in Ramsgrange is very good for anything you might need.
The house is very centrally located, we visited the sand sculpting in Duncannon (3km away) but preferred Baginbun beach which we went to a few days. It's not an Irish summer unless you've hidden from a rain shower under your picnic blanket on the beach. Once the sun came back out the kids (and we) had a fun afternoon jelly fishing and catching crabs and shrimp at low tide.
We all loved the lighthouse at Hook Head, its well worth a visit, and even the kids enjoyed it. Tintern Abbey is also worth a visit, and has lovely walks and gardens. Loftus House, as a reputed haunted house was fun, and not too scary, the kids enjoyed being spooked and it was an interesting tour from a historic perspective as well. If you have teenagers there is a great adventure centre at Sheilbeggan, which looked brilliant, cliff jumping, kayaking etc.
We managed to get away for an evening at Dunbrody House, a nearby gastronomic country house, which offers both a reasonable bar menu in the main house before 7, or a full menu in the restaurant. We also had a lovely meal in the Strand bar in Duncannon and lovely chips eaten in the wind sitting on the beach wall (another Irish tradition) from Off The Hook in Duncannon. Finally and probably most importantly on the food side, the kids voted the Centra in Ramsgrange best for icecream, although Henrys in Campile and Off The Hook in Duncannon were close seconds.
We found that our week went by so quickly, we would have been very happy to stay on, but we will definitely return to this house, it was a real find! We would highly recommend.
Just got back from our first visit to Ireland; and what a wonderful home from home we chose to stay in. The house is so spacious, but still manages to be warm and welcoming. I went with my 4 children and my mother; and we could gather together for a game of 'risk' or 'trivial pursuit', or find a quiet corner to read a book. The garden is a kids paradise - lots of play equipment and room to kick a ball, but also secret wooded areas to make dens etc. When we got back from a day out, they couldn't wait to get outside and play! My eldest son (16) was very impressed with the tv room - literally 100's of films to choose from. I saw so many that i'd like to watch, but actually only managed 1 because most evenings we were making use of the selection of board games. The house was spotlessly clean when we arrived, and the caretaker popped in shortly after we arrived to check everything was ok. We were lucky with the weather most of the week, although it is still very cold everywhere; so we visited lots of the local attractions; our favourites being: Hook lighthouse (excellent café), Loftus Hall - newly opened, most haunted house in Ireland. We went on the house tour with one of the owners - very interesting and a little spooky! We also loved the JFK Arboretum and the Irish Heritage Park near Wexford. So much still to see though - we'll have to go back!
This was our second year to stay in this outstanding house in Wexford. The house and location more than live up to it's photos and description on the website. We had fantastic directions emailed to us by the owner and on arrival there was a really usefull folder with detailed information on the house and things to do in the area.
The house was of the highest standard, perfectly clean with a fantastic kitchen, equipped with all mod cons. The TV room housed a selection of 100's of movies which was great in the evenings for the kids. The garden was huge complete with bbq, trampoline, swings and the added bonus of a seperate games room.
There was plenty to do. The beautiful Dollar Bay was a few minutes drive away. Hook Head lighthouse is a must. After the tour the kids did an art workshop, you don't have to book, while we had a delicious bowl of chowder in the lighthouse coffee shop. JFK Park is a short drive away as well as the Dunbrody famine ship and the National Heritage Park.
We mainy cooked in as the house was so nice and there was a well stocked Centra store 5 mins drive from the house. However on a couple of occasions we had lovely bar food in Roches Bar Duncannon.
I would highly recommend this property and location. We had a fantastic holiday and will definitely be back.
Due to my extensive travel overseas, we decided for the first time in years to holiday in Ireland rather than get on a plane. Rather than head West ( where I was originally from) we decided to go South / Sout East.
On coming across the house on-line, it looked promising. The fact that it was a standalone house, with a big garden, space and quiet really appealed to me.
FIRST IMPRESSIONS: In actual fact, the house is even more spacious than the impression given on-line. It is new, clean with ample space to eat ( inside , outside), lie out or read a book, or watch the large collection of DVD's available.
FOOD: We like good food, so we split our time between eating at the nice restaurants, Bar-Restaurants nearbye and cooking ourselves using local produce. A Lady sells fish on Thurs / Fri and we got great value. There was advice on where to go in a book left in the house, and this was very helpful. The Kitchen was excellent, but we also used the Bar-B-Que most days as the weather was good.
ACCOMODATION: The beds were comfortable. I slept exceptionally well. The bay-window on the photo is a suntrap, so it was really nice to sit there in the late evening also.
PLACES TO SEE: Our highlight was the trip to the Saltee Islands. We made the mistake of thinking that it was just a boat tour and went completely unprepared. You actually get to land on a rubber dirigidible and wander for ~ 5 hrs to one of the biggest bird colonies in Ireland. Despite having no food, suncream, umbrella or water for 2 young lads and ourselves, it still was one of the highlights as we saw rare birds ( puffins, great black back gulls ) up close.
The local beaches varied in size and use. The best were the smaller ones,e.g Dollar beach. The one in Duncannon is better for a walk or windsurfing, but not swimming. Waterford is close too.
We had no need to contact the owner during the stay, and did meet them at the last day. All was exactly as described.
We loved our time, and would reccomend this house to a family, to a group of couples. You do need to have a car or bikes to get to the sea, but that is more than compensated by the excellence of the house and location.
