Very nice house in an exellent location

  • 5 of 5

The location of the house is really very good. The first 3 days we used public transport but after that we took the two bikes to get around Tokyo. Much nicer and easier than public transport. The main street leads straight into Tokyo, past Akihabara, Tokyo Central station, the Imperial Palace, Ginza etc.The house is a bit off the main street so no noise from cars and busses.

The house was clean and the beds were comfortable. The information provided up front was excellent and we got a very warm welcome upon arrival. Highly recommended. We will visit Tokyo again and we will try to book this house again.

Great stay in Tokyo

  • 5 of 5

I stayed in the house for almost 2 weeks in November.

Easy to get to the house from the Nippori train stop, I took a taxi the night I arrived, and walked the day I left. I really felt like I was part of a real neighborhood. The house is not near a lot of hotels, but still walking distance to Ueno. Multiple convenience stores, liquor stores and drugstores nearby for supplies. I liked 7-11 (so very different from North American version) and the Drugstore Papas. All kinds of restaurants, bakeries, and little shops all around. Safe area, women and kids walking and biking around by themselves. All ages of people in the area.

Kitchen was stocked with basic spices, dishes and supplies. I especially liked the pour over coffee dripper and the microwave that is also a toaster, a grill and an oven. Clothes washer was super convenient.

Nice Japanese style toilet (including heated seats for those cold winter nights). Top floor bedroom stayed warm at night with heat on. Beds were comfy. I noticed the internet signal does not reach the 3rd floor.

Host was responsive, friendly and professional. Had no problems with the self check in or check out. Very helpful book in the house that explains all appliances and the garbage/recycling procedures.

Would recommend to anyone traveling to Tokyo.

Perfect Accommodation in Near Ueno

  • 5 of 5

My daughters and I had a perfect stay at this home. When we arrived, Hisae met us at the property exactly when she said she would, and estimated perfectly how long it would take us to travel from Narita airport to this home. We purchased 7-day JR Line passes, which were great, and took the JR Line from Narita to the Ueno station when we arrived. The walk from Ueno station to the home was about 20 to 25 minutes , but we could have taken a brief taxi ride or used the non-JR Line subway at Tokyo station and gotten off at the Sendagi station (I believe Suica is a good prepaid subway card; we just bought subway tickets as needed, but next time, we will likely get a Suica card along with a JR Line pass). Two bicycles are provided with the home, and we used them daily to ride to the Ueno station, and then took adventures by train throughout Japan. The beds were very comfortable, and the location was excellent. There was a local grocery store, a 7-11 for the ATM and quick items, cute restaurants, and a nail salon for my daughters. We would definitely stay her again in the future. Thank you Hisae!

Perfect location to start your Tokyo adventures

  • 5 of 5

Thank you Hisae for your hospitality and making us feel so welcome! Otome was the perfect for our family of four and a great location to explore Tokyo and beyond. It is maybe a three minute walk to the Sendagi station which was very convenient to get anywhere to need to go. There is an amazing fruit/veggie market right up the street as well as a fully stocked grocery store with incredibly friendly people willing to help you. You will find the bank across the street if you need to exchange money and several cafes with fantastic coffee and baked goods all within a short walking distance. What I liked most about Otome was the fact that even though it was close to all the areas of Tokyo you will want to visit, it was in a quiet neighborhood, away from the hustle and bustle. It was nice to retreat to the quiet house after a busy day of sight seeing. Thank you again Hisae! I couldn't think of a better place to stay while visiting Japan!

What a great apartment and wonderful, gracious host, Hisae. We are a family of 4 that stayed here for 6 nights and we absolutely loved it. Our first impression was, hmm, nice, steep stairs and well, not sure if we will actually cook in such a small kitchen. This couldn't have been further from our experience. We quickly got used to the steep stairs----use them like a ladder, don't go down them fast or in the middle of the night without lights (btw, there are automatic lights on the stairs). In spite of the great food around us, we had some of our favorite meals in this kitchen----coffee and full breakfasts every morning and a few really great dinners. We felt so happy to come home to our cozy abode and did I mention the neighborhood? Wonderful and charming; narrow, stone paved streets filled with boutiques and cafes and small businesses. You need to do a little exploring as these are not on the main street but on the back streets behind the Bento Box. Why "Bento Box"? Because if you took a bento box with its dividers and turn it on it's side, you have the Ottome house.

My only suggestion would be to offer 2 pillows per bed as I noticed this was a reoccuring comment in the guest book and something we took issue to as well. Hisae was quick to bring us extra pillow, but if everyone is and has been asking for them, why not offer them in the beginning.

Other than that our stay was PERFECT!! We loved it and miss it and want to return as soon as possible!!!

Great House in Real Tokyo Neighborhood

  • 5 of 5

This was a perfect place for our family of five. The house is located down a quiet street near convenience stores, small restaurants and a bank branch that will change your money. You won't see many other tourists here, but the subway stop is close to get you to the busier parts of Tokyo. Hisae met us the house, which was clean and comfortable as described. Small by western standards (with steep stairs!) but very livable. Highly recommended.

Car: not necessary

Yanesen is the collective name for the Yanaka, Nezu, and Sendagi neighbourhoods. It’s a great area to explore on foot and see the remnants of the shitamachi atmosphere of good old Tokyo—the traditional Japanese townscape and the friendliness and hospitality of the residents living there—all in the heart of the metropolis. This course takes a stroll through the classic shopping street, the symbolic mud wall of Kannon-ji Temple, and a famous shrine and gardens.
