About Fiona Davis (Stephenson)

Paul and I grew up close to London and have travelled around the world extensively. My husband Paul is an eminent architect. Me, I am a passionate about creating exceptional gardens. When it comes to 'projects' together we make an exciting team. This is our tenth year improving this property. We love it, care about it, stay in it when we can. If you choose to stay here, we hope it will fulfil your expectations in the way that it fulfils ours.

Fiona Davis (Stephenson) purchased this chateau / country house in 2003

Why Fiona Davis (Stephenson) chose Tarn-et-Garonne

It was love at first sight! From the moment we set foot in the courtyard and admired the views as well as the sheltered nature of the site we were falling in love with it.

Peering through the letter box, we could see the original stone floors of the hall and elegant stairs winding to the first floor. The solidity of the stone walls and generous proportions of the rooms within the house was such a refreshing change from all the other properties we viewed, many of which were poor quality conversions.

We chose the region because we both love France and fell in love with the friendliness, space and rolling, unspoilt countryside of the South West. The peace and tranquility as well as the ancient bastide towns from the middle ages, still in abundance drew us to this historic region.

We decided to hunt for properties in the middle of December, in order not to be seduced by lovely weather! After a week of searching we came across this one, it stole our hearts from the word go.

What makes this chateau / country house unique

The setting - views, each different, from all different rooms in the house, and all different areas of the gardens. So many of them. A south facing courtyard. Many outdoor facilities in the barns surrounding the main house.

The additional housekeeping service and optional excellent catering facilities.

The sunsets, when the clouds are on the heavy side of wispy at dusk, the sunsets can be gloriously breathtaking.

The swimming pool, open from late May to mid October. 16.5 metres long means 3 lengths = 50 metres for keen swimmers. Widening to 7 metres and 1.35 metres deep throughout makes it ideal for pool games. Security gate and walls with generous lounging areas within.

The gardens, extensive, inviting and absolutely full of flowers from March to November. We have developed around 10 gardens around the property, from intimate spaces to sweeping meadows, each with its own character and each inviting itself to be enjoyed.

The location, in a hamlet with a few other house, with villages each way within a couple of kilometres, several bigger towns with weekly markets within 15 minutes drive and cities within 45 minutes.

The elegance of the house, the rooms, how it is now furnished, the gardens, the pool areas, the outdoor rooms.

Beautiful house in fabulous surroundings

  • 5 of 5

We visited Cambou to celebrate my 70th birthday, all 19 of us,10 adults and 9 children from 10 years down to 5 months.Everyone had a fantastic time. The children loved the grounds and of course the pool as did the adults but we were able to escape the noise if necessary in the wonderful gardens and surrounding countryside. The house itself coped with everyone without us feeling cramped in any way. It was beautifully kept by "The Hoppies" who could not have been more friendly and helpful. The Gaillac wine festival was a great hit with some of us where we were able to buy and taste wines recommended by Paul and Fiona.

As we left there were requests to return another year. Overall wonderful experience. Than you.

Fabulous french farmhouse in the country.

  • 5 of 5

This generously luxurious french farmhouse, barn and pigeonier have been restored and equipped to a high standard. The gardens, grounds, sculptures and orangery provide plenty of space to be peaceful and enjoy the warm country air. Many thoughtful extras such as games, local information, kitchen equipment, pool robes etc all made for a smooth and stress free holiday. The crisp white bed linen and fluffy towels all added to the comfort. There are some great places to explore nearby with markets, restaurants, scenery and sports. We especially loved kayaking in the gorge and the live jazz at the bistro in the local village. On arrival, we were welcomed by Terri, who provided a basket of local food and wine and a candlelit house and garden. It was just what we needed after a long journey with small children. The attention to every small detail made us feel very well looked after. We really appreciated the books, DVD's and music collection and the logs for the fire. The property exceeded our expectations in its facilities, cleanliness and location. Although the photographs are accurate, the reality is such a wonderful surprise. We would definitely recommend this property to others, especially for a large family holiday like ours. It offers something for everyone.

Couldn't have been better, honestly

  • 5 of 5

I simply didn't want to leave! The house, the scenery, the local food and markets were pitch perfect for a relaxing holiday. I 'won' this week at a charity auction, wish shows the generosity of spirit the owners have, they couldn't have been more accommodating.

I would recommend this villa without hesitation. I would also recommend the caterer, food was superb on the three evenings we booked.

A massive thank you!

  • 5 of 5

We arrived in Cambou and were instantly taken aback by the house. Pictures do not do the place justice.

The decor looked beautiful and authentic, you could tell the owners have poured a lot of time and effort in to ensuring that guests enjoy their time. Spending mornings by the pool was an absolute delight and the living areas were ample for our party of 12.

Only a 15 minute drive from the town, the house is perfectly situated and is in easy driving distance from shops and restaurants.

Would definitely come back again and highly recommend for anyone interested in taking a break in one of the most peaceful areas in France.

Thank you again!

We could not have been better pleased with our holiday. Domaine de Cambou matched our expectations in every way. It is beautiful, homely house with a charming barn and pigeonnier and an exquisite garden. It suited our party of 14, three generations of one family perfectly, with plenty of space to enjoy being together, while allowing all of us to do our own thing. We were made welcome when we arrived and were shown where everything was and how it worked. The few things that went wrong during our stay were dealt with promptly. A note of caution might be that the property can sleep 18 people, provided that the party can be accommodated in 5 double beds, 1 double and I single beds in one room, 2 single beds in one room and 2 bunk beds but we could only seat 14 comfortably round the largest table outside. Having precise locations of ATM, the Carrefour supermarket and petrol stations would have been helpful as well, but it is a beautiful place. We had a lovely time and we would be delighted to return.

Beautiful France but poor customer service

  • 1 of 5

Property and area were as described and a beautiful setting for a large group.

We encountered some serious summer storms that resulted in a shattered window in one of the single pane windows.the ground staff promptly came and made the repairs which was great.

Our only issue pertained to the rental agreement which took a substantial deposit which was never returned. Our hypothesis is that this is from the window but there has been no followup from the owner as to why our deposit was not returned.

Owner's Response: Included below is our response letter to this guest - we were very sorry not to get back to them sooner. The damaged hammock proved to be difficult to repair (it was only bought the year before) and, in fact, is still out of action. We deducted only a small amount for the damage. However the delay in responding was not helpful on our part. We have since changed the way we work out the deposit repayments, making it much faster. It is within two weeks if there is no damage. It can take longer if quotes are needed to quantify costs of damage experienced. One thing we do do, is minimise the costs passed on to guests, making repairs the most cost effective we can. In this way, it is better by far, on both sides, if any damage is reported before departure. With regards to the delays in responding, we had moved out of our house - which was being demolished and rebuilt in the UK - and we were just not on top of paperwork - especially where the resolves and cost was less easy to find. A lesson learned by us, we are happier with our new system - as are our guests. Response letter: Deepest apologies for not getting back to you sooner in regards to your damage deposit refund. We haven't found a replacement for the hammock yet so have agreed to charge 30 euros for replacing the hammock fabric. That would leave 470 euros to return. Please could you advise on how you would like to be paid: bank details, currency etc and we will arrange this for you asap.

The property can be rented as a self catering let (as priced) or, you can book for meals to be provided. We recommend very high quality chef who will cook for you at the house. A wonderful gazebo set on the edge of the meadow on the south side of the house provides an alternative outdoor space for relaxing, painting, eating, general chilling out; a large stretch of mown grass provides running space for (supervised) children. The gardens are beautifully planted in bold drifts presenting a flower show all through the year. The orchard is stocked with many fruits which you can use in the kitchens during your visit. We open the pool in May and close it in September. We eat outside often from March onwards. In autumn it usually stays warm in spells until December. In spring and summer gardens and local walks in the environs are full of wild flowers, wild orchids, and myriads of bees, butterflies and birds.
