Photos and Description of this 1 bedroom holiday apartment in Florence Historic Centre - Casa Giardino

Santo Spirito-Piazza Pitti apartment with garden sleeps 2/4

Santo Spirito-Piazza Pitti apartment with garden sleeps 2/4This newly-renovated apartment is located on the first floor of an old building 50 metres from Piazza Pitti. It is about 45 square metres and has the rare feature of a beautiful walled garden which, being at the back of the building, is a haven of peace and birdsong in the centre of the city.

The living room has a mezzanine floor with a double bed. On the lower level is a comfortable sofa bed and seating area, large wardrobe, desk and work area with internet connection and large window overlooking the garden.

The spacious, brand new kitchen has a traditional marble-topped table that seats four comfortably, an armchair corner and a door leading out onto the garden.

The bathroom is done out in pale stone with slate grey tiling on the floor: it is contemporary and chic and really quite large for an apartment of this size. There is a small storage room too.

There are oak floors throughout.

The garden has jasmine and antique roses climbing the walls and fresh herbs for use in your Tuscan cooking: a table and chairs provide a perfect spot for al fresco meals and aperitivi.

Although we are at present renting this apartment out, we have deliberately restored it with a view to using it as our own pied-a-terre in Florence one day, so we have not cut corners!

About Nicky Swallow

Why Nicky Swallow chose Florence Historic Centre

A garden, even a small one, is a dream in the centre of Florence: we couldn't resist!

What makes this apartment unique

The location of Casa Giardino is perfect: the Oltrano is the most interesting area of Florence, removed from the worst of the tourist crowds yet within easy walking distance of all the main sights and monuments. The combination of this location and the fact of having a garden to retreat to after a hard days' sightseeing is unique.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Drop whatever you're doing and book this apartment RIGHT NOW. If you are heading to Florence and only want one of the most charming places to land, this is the place for you. Among other things Casa Giardino has the most quaint garden that looks upon the observatory where Galileo made his observations. GALILEO. IN THE 1500's! Nicky (absolutely charming) was waiting for us, a chilled bottle of Prosecco in the fridge and gave us instructions. She showed us the loft sleeping area and double bed, the downstairs living area, the eat-in kitchen bath and the all important air-conditioning. Everything was very well appointed, clean and neat, warm and inviting. The location was across the river from the hordes of tourists and the sites and this suited us perfectly. The city is easily walkable and we enjoyed the stroll into town. To its every credit this is not a hotel. It is a real slice of life lived in Italy, you are separated from the hotel with its monogrammed everything, you are home. So yeah, my review is all exclamation points and such because I was blown away. Shortcomings? Not worth mentioning, nit-picky. Besides, you'll spend most of your time out in the streets. IN ITALY!

A jewel of a place in Florence

  • 5 of 5

I am not a tourist in Florence as I have lived there, right in the same area of this little jewel, for many, many years. I therefore know the position and area very well. As I do not live permanently in Florence any more, I stay in this apartment when I visit Florence.

This apartment is very clean and beautifully decorated with a soft and sophisticated color scheme of very pale green, off white and white. It is wonderfully equipped with all necessities throughout: nice clean sets of plates, cutlery and pans; lovely linens, a nicely stocked library, and a good selection of CDs and DVDs. A good pile of magazines provide cultural information about Italy and Florence, some written by the travel writer owner.

The location couldn't be better. Just steps away from the Pitti Palace and Piazza S. Spirito, where daily markets provide fresh produce and clothing to organic bread, as well as organic breads and cheeses once a month. The Ponte Vecchio, the Boboli Gardens, and the Arno River are just a 5 minute walk in either direction. A 15 minute walk gets you straight to the Duomo.

I love this apartment and would stay in it any time I had the chance, I absolutely recommend it, with no hesitation, to anyone traveling in one or two persons.

Perfection in Firenze

  • 5 of 5

We have lived in Florence on prior occasions and gravitated always to the Santo Spirito area which is alive with good people, coffee, wine and food. This apartment could not be more perfectly situated at the head of Via Romana and the gateway to the Pitti Palace and Santo Spirito proper and we could not have chosed a better location for a shorter stay.

Upon entering the apartment one is immediately struck at how clean and well appointed it is. A cozy sitting room, a modern and functional kitchen with actual high end pots, pans and everything you would need to cook at home. The back terrace is private and well kept and I especially loved to pick the fresh herbs which are well tended and a nice bonus. All appliances are new and top end including the oven and washing machine.

The bathroom is super modern and big, and there was never, ever a shortage of hot water in the spacious shower.

The loft bedroom has a very comfortable bed and high quality linens and pillows (rare for Italy). Importantly, this apartment is very, very quiet- in fact the street is almost a city block away out to the front and the terrace/courtyard in the back is serene. We never heard a thing from outside our whole stay. The stairs to the loft have a good safe railing (also not always the case to have a railing in Italy) and the stairs may be a drawback for those who cannot navigate but we had no problems (despite the consumption of vino!).

The hosts have stocked the bookshelves with guides to Florence for reference, phrase books, suggested venues to visit and travel magazines with articles written by the hostess herself. Despite having lived in Florence the access to this little library was also a nice touch in addition to good Wifi service.

Finally, back to the location. In our view there is no better epicenter than where this place is- mere minutes from the Ponte Vecchio, seconds away from Santo Spirito and with good access to grocery, meat, vegetable, bread and other shopping from good specialty stores with friendly butchers and green grocers.

We will definitely stay here again and left wishing that we could live in Florence again in this apartment. I can't think of a better compliment to give a place.

Splendid Flat! Nice cosy and indeed nearly private

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderfull time in Florence and can surely say because we rested in this cosy flat. Center located and nearly everything within reach of short foot walks. Even a bus stop is right next door. So we honestly can give a five star recommendation!

What a fantastic place

  • 5 of 5

It's been our first time to Florence and we're sure it wasn't the last!

The Apartment is perfectly located in a very nice area with a lot of restaurants and little nice italian shops. It isn't crowded with tourists, a lot of italian families are going out for dinner and drinks as well. The Palazzo de Pitti is just 2 minutes away, the Ponte Veccio just 5 minutes and the Duomo maybe 10 minutes to walk. Everything is very close!

The Apartment is perfect for 2 persons. As I like to have a coffee in the morning outside it is the perfect place to be. A nice terrace, very very quiet but when you leave the house you're in the middle of everything.

It is very clean, everything is decorated with love and taste. Everything you need is in the Apartment and all the things you might need in addition you can get in the supermarket just 5 minutes away.

We highly recommend this Apartment and we're very sure we will come back to Florence and Nicky's Aparment.

By the way: Nicky wasn't there during our stay but in the days before we came we had a very good contact, she gave us a lot of information about local restaurants and bars, which we have visited. They all were fantastic! Her friend welcomed us very nice and everything was so uncomplicated. We felt at home for these 4 days!

Thank you!

Stay in the heart of Florentine Life

  • 5 of 5

It felt like home from home, we were well received and given plenty of guidance on the local area. We followed the restaurant guide, even though I knew many of the recommendations it was evident that we would discover more culinary delights. The images on the web site are a true representation of the actual home, and both bed and sofà bed were extremely comfortable. Everything was spotless and couldn't have asked for more. I will return.

Our apartment is located in the Oltrarno area south of the river, a few metres from the Pitti Palace and also very close to lively Piazza Santo Spirito. This is one of the few neighbourhoods in Florence that still has a genuinely local feel. It is only metres from the tourist haunts of the Ponte Vecchio and Palazzo Pitti and yet farmers still sell produce daily in the piazza. Five minutes walk brings you to Ponte Santa Trinita across which lies chic Via Tornabuoni, the Duomo, the Uffizi gallery and Palazzo Vecchio. A five minute walk to the east through the newly-pedestrianised Piazza Pitti leads to the Ponte Vecchio. There are lots of bars, restaurants and shops of all types (from bakares to butchers to chic antique stores and quirky independent boutiques) in the area plus some of the city's most interesting sights. The Pitti museums are virtually on the doorstep, the back entrance to the Boboli gardens is just up the road, the delightful Specola museum of natural history is next door and the church of Santo Spirito, Brunelleschi's last work, is 50 metres away. There are banks, a post office, buses to the train station nearby. It's a great area to live in! This exceptional location plus the garden make our flat an ideal place for your Florence holiday.
