About the property

Santo Spirito-Piazza Pitti apartment with garden sleeps 2/4

Santo Spirito-Piazza Pitti apartment with garden sleeps 2/4This newly-renovated apartment is located on the first floor of an old building 50 metres from Piazza Pitti. It is about 45 square metres and has the rare feature of a beautiful walled garden which, being at the back of the building, is a haven of peace and birdsong in the centre of the city.

The living room has a mezzanine floor with a double bed. On the lower level is a comfortable sofa bed and seating area, large wardrobe, desk and work area with internet connection and large window overlooking the garden.

The spacious, brand new kitchen has a traditional marble-topped table that seats four comfortably, an armchair corner and a door leading out onto the garden.

The bathroom is done out in pale stone with slate grey tiling on the floor: it is contemporary and chic and really quite large for an apartment of this size. There is a small storage room too.

There are oak floors throughout.

The garden has jasmine and antique roses climbing the walls and fresh herbs for use in your Tuscan cooking: a table and chairs provide a perfect spot for al fresco meals and aperitivi.

Although we are at present renting this apartment out, we have deliberately restored it with a view to using it as our own pied-a-terre in Florence one day, so we have not cut corners!

About Nicky Swallow

I am English and Luca is Florentine: I have lived in Florence since 1981. We live around the corner from the apartment just off Piazza Santo Spirito and would not want to live anywhere else. We will always be on hand to help out with any practical problems and to make sure you get the most from your stay in this beautiful city.

Nicky Swallow purchased this apartment in 2012

Why Nicky Swallow chose Oltrarno

A garden, even a small one, is a dream in the centre of Florence: we couldn't resist!

What makes this apartment unique

The location of Casa Giardino is perfect: the Oltrano is the most interesting area of Florence, removed from the worst of the tourist crowds yet within easy walking distance of all the main sights and monuments. The combination of this location and the fact of having a garden to retreat to after a hard days' sightseeing is unique.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Drop whatever you're doing and book this apartment RIGHT NOW. If you are heading to Florence and only want one of the most charming places to land, this is the place for you. Among other things Casa Giardino has the most quaint garden that looks upon the observatory where Galileo made his observations. GALILEO. IN THE 1500's! Nicky (absolutely charming) was waiting for us, a chilled bottle of Prosecco in the fridge and gave us instructions. She showed us the loft sleeping area and double bed, the downstairs living area, the eat-in kitchen bath and the all important air-conditioning. Everything was very well appointed, clean and neat, warm and inviting. The location was across the river from the hordes of tourists and the sites and this suited us perfectly. The city is easily walkable and we enjoyed the stroll into town. To its every credit this is not a hotel. It is a real slice of life lived in Italy, you are separated from the hotel with its monogrammed everything, you are home. So yeah, my review is all exclamation points and such because I was blown away. Shortcomings? Not worth mentioning, nit-picky. Besides, you'll spend most of your time out in the streets. IN ITALY!

Serene , secluded and secret by Pitti Palace.

  • 5 of 5

We have longed to stay at this 'secret' little apartment for ages and have just had a whole glorious week there. Hard to know where to start in praise of it.

Perfect location, very close to Pitti Palace. Absolutely spotlessly clean and beautifully appointed, everything works! The bathroom is one of the best that we have ever had in these circumstances and the addition of washing machine, iron and ironing board is a real bonus when away from home for longer periods.

The garden is a complete delight, a courtyard, beautifully planted with a selection of herbs as well as climbing roses, an abundance of jasmine and hydrangeas. This sanctuary, overlooked by Galileo's tower is a perfect spot to relax at days end and in the cool early mornings and a complete delight and surprise in this part of Florence.

Communication with the owner was very quick and check in/ check out, very straight forward, Nicky is incredibly generous too with her knowledge of the area both geographically and historically. There is a well presented folder which details everything from how to work the washing machine to where to eat....very helpful, thank you.

The bed was very comfortable, good quality linen etc, and the apartment is quiet with a very peaceful atmosphere, a haven from the frenetic energy that exudes in Florence.

We LOVED simply everything and long to stay again.

Thank you so much. We can’t recommend highly enough.

Airy apartment & great garden tucked away from the noise & crowds of Florence!

  • 5 of 5

Nicky was waiting to welcome us and gave us a quick overview of the apartment. Our first impression was how lovely and homely it felt and the bonus of the garden was great. Everything was very clean. The bed was so comfortable and we both had the best sleep. Apart from occasional noise from neighbouring properties, it was very tranquil in both the apartment and the garden. This was certainly appreciated at the end of busy, hot days in the City. There are plenty of restaurants & shops on the doorstep and we found a great food market (and more restaurants) just around the corner. A short distance to the river, which then leads you to all the main attractions and sights. The railway station is about 25 mins walk and all on the flat.

A great apartment - thanks Nicky. We loved it!

an outside garden in Florence? oh my!

  • 5 of 5

Ms. Swallow is a delight and her flat is done very well. Great location near Pitti Palance and the Boboli Gardens. a nice restaurant for local upstairs at Maggiotore (10 meters to the right, go upstairs ask for Fabio to let you sit in garden in back)....but the fine dining at Osteria dell' Enoteca (200 meters to the left) is a mandatory experience!. Free walking tour with Giacomo was good. Walk up to the Piazza Michelangelo for a free and the best city view. No lift, but only up 2 stairways. Nicky very helpful. A+++

Perfect location and lovely apartment

  • 5 of 5

The location just down the street from the Ponte Vecchio was easy to find and just far enough away from the central part of Florence that you felt like you were living in a neighborhood.

The outdoor space was so romantic and everything about the apartment was very modern, super clean & comfortable. It was nice to have a washing machine but there is no dryer so you have to allow time for items to dry.

The bed was very comfortable and upon our return to the U.S., we bought a pillow just like the ones used in this apartment.

Would definitely stay here again!!

Beautiful and Great Location VRBO with a Great Hostess

  • 5 of 5

Nicky is one of the best hostesses ever! The vrbo is located close to the Pitti Palace, and is minutes away from anything and everything one would enjoy in Florence. The vrbo is spacious, with central heating and a beautiful little kitchen. The bed is super comfortable and solid. We were not able to use the garden since we visited in the cold months, but we imagine it to be a great place to hang out with a bottle of vino during the warmer season. There is a bar right downstairs to get your caffe or a panini, dozens of ristorante around, and historical sights within minutes of walking. You will not be disappointed.

As typical for Italian culture, the train workers decided to strike when we were leaving Florence. We explained our predicament with Nicky, and she gave us numbers to call in order to get more information about taxis, advice on taking other trains, and offered for us to stay another day should we need to. She accommodated us in our time of need, and for this we are forever grateful. We ended up being able to leave on schedule, so we did not have to stay the extra night. However, Nicky gave us peace of mind to at least have a place to stay. Grazie mille Nicky!

Darling apartment in the perfect location.

  • 5 of 5

We loved this apartment. It was the perfect size for just the two of us. We also loved the little garden area for enjoying a glass of wine and playing cards after a long day of exploring. the location was excellent, right next door to the Pitti Palace. Also very close to coffee shops and a grocery store for making a few light meals before heading to a local restaurant for a beautiful dinner. The owner, Nicky, met us when we arrived and made sure we had everything we needed. A great experience.

Our apartment is located in the Oltrarno area south of the river, a few metres from the Pitti Palace and also very close to lively Piazza Santo Spirito. This is one of the few neighbourhoods in Florence that still has a genuinely local feel. It is only metres from the tourist haunts of the Ponte Vecchio and Palazzo Pitti and yet farmers still sell produce daily in the piazza. Five minutes walk brings you to Ponte Santa Trinita across which lies chic Via Tornabuoni, the Duomo, the Uffizi gallery and Palazzo Vecchio. A five minute walk to the east through the newly-pedestrianised Piazza Pitti leads to the Ponte Vecchio. There are lots of bars, restaurants and shops of all types (from bakares to butchers to chic antique stores and quirky independent boutiques) in the area plus some of the city's most interesting sights. The Pitti museums are virtually on the doorstep, the back entrance to the Boboli gardens is just up the road, the delightful Specola museum of natural history is next door and the church of Santo Spirito, Brunelleschi's last work, is 50 metres away. There are banks, a post office, buses to the train station nearby. It's a great area to live in! This exceptional location plus the garden make our flat an ideal place for your Florence holiday.
