Photos and Description of this 3 bedroom holiday cottage in Kyle - Saraig

A cottage with exquisite views accompanied by the timeless sounds of the sea.

Set on the edge of Ratagan Forest on the shores of Loch Duich, this delightful cottage is one of two forester's cottages standing in isolation and accessed by a single track road four miles from the A87. Saraig enjoys the best of both worlds basking in peace and quiet yards away from the water's edge, yet is only 25 minutes from the Kyle of Lochalsh which has a supermarket, medical centre, swimming pool and train station. Within easy driving distance are a couple of restaurants, a welcoming bar and Kintail Crafts, a delightful Aladdin's Cave of a shop.

Surrounded by mountains, forest, and loch, the ever-changing views from this cottage are truly spectacular making it a perfect retreat for those who want to get away from it all. On a clear night, the milky way is visible and in the distance, far enough away not to cause light pollution, the illuminated Eilean Donan Castle shimmers in the dark.

With 22 Munros in the area and miles of coastline, Saraig is perfect for hillwalking and rambling. It is also ideal for cycling, sailing, wildlife enthusiasts (we have a pine martens who regularly visit the back garden) and those who like to fish. Loch Duich is a sea loch and permission to fish it is not needed. Boats can be hired from nearby Letterfearn.

There is so much to see and do in the area a week is hardly long enough. Within easy reach is Eilean Donan Castle, the iron age brochs of Glenelg, Attadale and Armadale gardens, the dramatic Falls of Glomach, plus boat trips galore including a glass-bottomed boat trip and Calum's seal trips. At certain times of the year there are also whalewatching trips. There is a wide variety of walks from the challenging Five Sisters of Kintail and Saddle to a gentle stroll along the shores of Loch Duich right outside the front gate. Wander through deserted glens, alongside bubbling burns, through dense forest, past cascading waterfalls (numerous after heavy rainfall). The township road Saraig stands on is a very quiet road which gradually peters out, the only traffic being cars accessing the cottages along the lochside. It is a lovely walk with stunning views, lapping waves and the chance of spotting otters and seals. Herons frequent the area and from time to time eagles, deer and dolphins can be seen.

The interior of this cottage is charming with a log burning stove at its heart. This spacious yet cosy cottage sleeps 6 people over 3 bedrooms - 2 king and 1 twin, two bathrooms, lounge, dining room, kitchen and utility room. The beds are wonderfully comfortable with good quality bedding. All bedrooms enjoy views of the loch. All in all if you want a relaxing, tranquil holiday then Saraig is ideal for your needs; if you want a holiday packed full of outdoor activities then Saraig is perfect for the job; if you want to visit castles, historic sites, gardens, and tour much of the northwest highlands and islands, then Saraig is the base for you. All the photos are of, or taken from, Saraig.

One last note - it is possible to get married anywhere in Scotland including on the beach, and this is precisely what two of Saraig's guests did. With a piper piping the bride from the cottage, it was a fairytale wedding as the sound of the bagpipes echoed around the mountains. The bride herself described it as magical.

About Paula Reynolds

With over 15 years' experience in the self-catering business, Saraig is my newest venture. As a fellow holiday-maker, it is very important to me that guests have a wonderful holiday. Therefore, I have done everything I can to ensure guests have the best time possible. For added security for both of us, please telephone me after my email response and if you decide to book; it is a good way to verify that I am the owner.

Paula Reynolds purchased this cottage in 2013

Why Paula Reynolds chose Scottish Highlands & Islands

I love the Glenshiel/Loch Duich area and have been holidaying there regularly for the past 29 years. When I first saw Saraig standing just a few yards from the water's edge in breath-taking surrounds, I fell in love with it even before I ventured inside. Once inside I made up my mind there and then to buy it. It is a property with bags of character, a very homely atmosphere, and incredible views.

What makes this cottage unique

Saraig ticks so many boxes for the holiday-maker; it's in a remote, peaceful location yet not far from the town of Kyle: it's in an area of 22 Munro mountains and countless walks covering all degrees of difficulty: it's sea-lochside, yards from the beach (not a sandy one): it's on the edge of a forest with lots of trails for the mountain biker: it's great for wildlife enthusiasts: it has breath-taking views. Last but not least, it is close to Skye, Plockton, Glenelg, Applecross, Loch Ness and other places too numerous to mention. As mentioned in the description, it is also perfect for small weddings!

Our hearts are still there.

Having carefully read the reviews we hoped that Saraig would be the perfect destination for us to tie-the-knot and I'm thrilled to say it made all our dreams come true. Getting married lock side with the mountains and forest as our backdrop left nothing for us to do but get swept up in the romance of it all. We stayed for a week with our two witnesses, so there was ample space and big cosy big beds to choose from. The idea that we might catch a glimpse of pine martens was so exciting and when they emerged on day three and tucked into our peanut butter sandwiches it knocked our socks off. The otter put in a stella appearance on the final night and was bathed in golden light as the sun disappeared. Glenshiel and Glenelg are stunning. There's no need to go on long journeys to find beautiful locations because you're slap-bang in the middle of one. Coming back to the cottage to a lovely fire is bliss and watching the mountains opposite change colour with the ever changing weather is truly a sight that captivates; who needs tele? Both Paula and Saraig are wonderfully welcoming and we couldn't have asked for more. I just hope it all remains a secret so that we can book in again soon. P.S. Paula you're the best, thanks for being our honorary guest and taking such cracking photos! We owe you big time! xx

Owner's Response: It was very much my pleasure. Your wedding was magical. To see you being piped out of the cottage by a wonderful piper and watch you marry on the beach with the mountains and loch as a backdrop all to the strains of the bagpipes was breathtaking. Thank you so much for that experience. I look forward to your next visit. Thanks for taking the time to leave this review and best wishes for a happy future, Paula

lovely homely and relaxing stay for a week in May. Paula and Rob very helpful - even let me use their BT Sports link to watch a football match! several visits from house martins and badger, though only managed to see him on one occasion.

Thanks Paula.

Wonderful cottage in superb location

  • 5 of 5

Where do I start? We have stayed in the area 5 times now in various properties and for facilities, general comfort and location this is the best property we have stayed in. We had superb weather for the whole week and this combined with the stunning outlook meant that on two separate days we were simply happy to stay on the loch side or use the garden. We visited Plockton, Glenelg and the wonderful Applecross. Sitting in the beer garden in Plockton and Glenelg enjoying a drink with such wonderful scenery is difficult to beat but Applecross yet again came out top as we sat outside on a beautiful sunny evening and enjoyed a lovely meal in a superb setting. This after finding a beautiful sandy beach 2 miles outside the village where for the majority of the time the 4 of us and 2 dogs were the only ones using it. Idyllic. Amongst others we ate at the Kintail Lodge which we would also recommend. As advised the Peanut Butter sandwiches worked a treat and brought daily visits from many birds and Mr P Martin. We were also lucky enough to see Seals at Glenelg and 4 Dolphins at the furthest point down the lane heading out to sea opposite Eilann Donan. The lane was very quiet and an ideal way to start and end the day by having a wander with the dogs. The cottage was well equipped, extremely comfortable and as mentioned the beds so comfortable a good nights sleep was guaranteed. We would not hesitate to recommend the property, our first experience of a property through Owners Direct. Paula it was great to meet you, thank you for the opportunity to stay in your wonderful cottage. Some fantastic memories and after being home for a couple of weeks a yearning to be back there in the peace and tranquility. A wonderful holiday we will remember for a long time. There is no doubt that you will be seeing us again in the not too distant future.

Stunning Location xx

  • 5 of 5

Just got back from an amazing week.

The cottage was fantastic, exactly as described. Quaint, characterful, dressed in keeping with its age, and spotlessly clean.

The beds were to die for at the end of a long day walking, so comfortable and relaxing, and the feather duvets. . . . . I need to know where they are from, amazing.

You could not ask for a better location, the views are stunning, and changeable with the weather, so you feel you see something new every day.

We would recommend the walk from Letterfern to Dun Totaig, the views of Eilean Donan castle are great, also the loch views.

We also took a trip to Plockton, well worth it.

Another must see was Glenelg, turquoise waters and sandy beaches make you think you're on a med holiday.

If you're up for a challenge, a trip up the mount directly across from the cottage is well recommended.

For the wildlife lovers, the pine marten visited everyday, I did spoil him/her a bit. We also had a badger visit on our first and last night too. The power of a peanut butter sandwich x

Paula, thank you so much for the opportunity to stay in your wonderful cottage and for making us feel welcome and completely at home xx

Fantastic Cottage in a beautiful Loch location

  • 5 of 5

I don't know where to start - but I will try! It was lovely and snuggly warm on arrival and spotlessly clean, there was everything in the cottage and much more than we expected Paula had thought of everything to make our stay very welcoming with all the special touches. When we managed to get ourselves out of the comfy high quality bed and bedding on the mornings , we had the most fantastic view of the loch and mountain range - some still with snow on, (whilst there we saw at least 7 rainbows on the loch fantastic) we where never disappointed with view always different at different times of day.

out and about:- walked down loch passed cottage - we where lucky enough to see golden eagle, deers on th A87 before eilean donan castle, (great day walking round castle) also the pine martins came to visit every evening in the back garden a delight. also plenty of different birds. Great drive over Ratagan Pass to Glenelg over to Syke on ferry - (skye , too much to mention too do - we have visited many times before). Applecross pass fantastic, Plockton village (boat trip fantastic and we saw seals !!) But Paula has thought of all this as well with a fantastic information sheet where to visit and eat etc. Thanks again Paula for a wonderful stay at a fantastic cottage in a super location for everything.

Wonderful cottage in stunning location

  • 5 of 5

Saraig is a beautiful cottage-so comfortable, well-equipped and full of character.

It was toasty warm and spotlessly clean on our arrival and we were able to make ourselves at home immediately. Paula obviously is an owner who cares a lot about her guest's comfort and experience- her attention to detail in the cottage is testament to that, as is the carefully put-together list of activities and facilities in the local area. The beds and bedding were of a really high quality, so much so it was it was somewhat of a struggle to get out of them in the morning! We did however manage to and were rewarded with the most stunning views of the loch and mountains, a view which looked different everyday we were there. We were fortunate enough to wake up to beautiful snow-capped mountains on one particular morning. We ventured out to explore everyday-there really is so much to do and see in the local area. The walking around the loch was superb-my boys enjoyed spotting seals and sea otters. Fabulous hill-walking and lots of cosy inns in the area. We will definitely return to Saraig. Thank you Paula.
