LunaMia is situated in a sunny corner of Schwangau/Horn, the closest part of Schwangau to the Castles and to Fuessen. We are right on the famous cycling track from the Bodensee to the Koenigsee and on the Via Claudia Augusta (the ancient Roman road that led from the Po River lowlands and the Adriatic Sea all the way to Bavaria and the Danube). Our street, Frauenbergstraße has little traffic. The house and gardens are oriented south westwards. The castles Neuschwanstein & Hohenschwangau, the Alps and surrounding lakes sculpt our fairytale landscape in summer as in winter. The Allgaeu, especially Schwangau is visitor friendly all year around. The castles are our main attraction, just 3km away – a 20 minute walk across the Bavarian prairie or a 2 minute drive by car or bus. In summer, just a 5 minute walk or bike ride away from our house there is a choice of 3 lakes to swim or sail in.

Via Claudia Augusta: The Via Claudia Augusta has become a bridge joining and blending cultures, places and emotions. It is a symbolic route that spans three nations, each with its own diverse landscape and traditions, artistic treasures and culinary specialities, marked by a more approachable, youthful and ecologically sustainable tourism. The Bavarian itinerary of 160km invites us to leave our watches at home to explore places and landscapes from a fresh perspective, attentive to the colours, subtle nuances, fragrances and flavours of the history that permeates everything here.

The Forggensee, the Schwansee, the Bannwaldsee, the Hopfensee and the Weißensee are all in hiking and biking distance from LunaMia. There you can swim and sunbathe or ice-skate

The Zugspitze, the Wieskirche, the Castle Linderhof and the Abbey Ottobeuren are all worth a day trip.

Austria, Tirol is just a few kilometres away from Schwangau and offers many great day trip possibilities.

Huts & Cabins: The Drehhütte, once a log cabin for the lumberjacks in the area, now a great place to trek to with a super atmosphere and great Bavarian food. After strengthening oneself it’s a further ideal starting point for longer treks into the mountains nearby. In winter the trail back down into the valley is a great ride with the sledge!

The Bleckenau, my personal favourite! The hunting lodge of King Ludwig II., lies cradled in a lovely mountain valley, directly behind the Castle Neuschwanstein in the natural reserve of the Ammer mountains at 1167m above sea level. Although the Bleckenau lies in an alpine terrain, reaching it is not so difficult. We walk up there with our children several times a year (2hours) and if you tire on the way you can flag down the transfer van. It is also possible to reach the Bleckenau from the Tegelberg using the cable car and then walking down the back of the Tegelberg – absolutely flabbergasting views and all downhill.

50 sq.m a small independent house with its own herb garden & terrace and a free view towards the South West onto the mountains of Pfronten. 1 large bedroom upstairs with a King size bed & free standing shower in the bedroom, living room with a kitchenette, a large comfortable sofa (sleeps 2 more), bathroom with a & WC. Flat screen TV with Satellite connection with many international channels. The kitchenette has 2 electric cooking fields, toaster, coffee machine, a dishwasher, microwave and a refrigerator with freezer. The apartment has tiled floors with floor heating in soft earth colours downstairs and a natural bamboo floor upstairs.

The LunaMia Boutique Apartments, the only 5 Star property in Schwangau, are situated in a peaceful part of Schwangau, in a historical building, the garden has very old trees and wonderful panoramic views in all directions. The castles Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau are just a stone throw away. The Wallfahrtskirche St. Coloman, the old medieval town of Füssen with the cloister and castle as well as the church, 'Die Wies' are further places of historical interest to visit nearby.

The region fulfils any imaginable pastime, from visiting Castles Neuschwanstein & Hohenschwangau to downhill & cross country skiing, trekking and mountain biking, culture and culinary highlights. The hiking possibilities are vast, at all levels – either comfortable low risk tours in the plains at the skirts of the Bavarian Alps or serious mountaineering into the “Ammergebirge” with its exceptional views and challenging trails.

Other Activities: Canoeing, rafting

Ski: LunaMia is located in a perfect area to combine sport and culture within one holiday.

We have snow from the beginning of December until late March, there are small ski areas right on our doorstep, within 5 to 10 minute drives. These places have snow making possibilities, so snow is guaranteed and as they are not so well known; there are no long lines and crowded slopes!

Tegelberg Ski Arena & Nesselwang have night skiing, Hanenkamm in Tirol near Reutte, Tannheimer Tal with Grän and Füssener Jöchle, Breitenberg in Pfronten and Oberstdorf is just a 25minute drive away. Berwang & Ehrwald with the Zugsspitz Arena are also just 35minutes away.
