Overview

About the property

The house is beautiful, bright and spacious. It an old family house in the centre of Reykjavik.

It has five bedrooms and two bathrooms, private entrance and private parking. The location is superb- right in the heart of the city centre.

There are five bedrooms and two bathrooms. A cozy back garden as well as a private parking space if you decide to rent a car.

Three of the bedrooms and one bathroom are on the upper floor. There is a washing machine in the upstairs bathroom as well as a dryer. Two of the upstairs bedrooms have a double bed and the third one two singles.

One bedroom downstairs has a double bed and the other has two single beds. The bathroom downstairs has a shower.

The kitchen is on the lower floor. It is open plan and very spacious, designed for a chef - by a chef, fully equipped with a gas hob, two large ovens, fridge/freezer and a dishwasher.

There is a large dining table with 8 dining chairs (extra can be added if needed), and the living room is adjacent, with two sofas.

The stairs to the upper floor might be a challenge to older or younger guests.

The house is historic and once belonged to Iceland´s most famous composer Jón Leifs and plays an important role in the city´s history. It has been carefully restored over the last few years where the focus has been on replacing as little as possible, paying homage to its historical and cultural significance

The house is currently being renovated on the outside so there are scaffolds around it but renovations are scheduled to finish in spring. The renovations do not affect our guests at all and scaffolding only covers the side of the house facing the street - not the garden.

The house is really well located, right in the centre of Reykjavik. All the best restaurants are within 2-10 min walking distance. There are lots of attractions in a short walking distance and only a few steps and you are on Laugarvegur, the main shopping street in Reykjavik, with it´s buzzing caffées, shops and restaurants, as well as the main shopping street, Laugarvegur, with nice shops and cafés, and Skólavörðustígur, with art galleries and nice little shops.

Our street, Bókhlöðustígur, is a beautiful part of the old town. The houses were built in the 18th century (our house was built in 1887), which is VERY old in Icelandic terms as our buildings were constructed of such poor material that they didn't survive until modern days. Our house is among the oldest in Reykjavik and is preserved. The basement of our house is built from leftover stone that was used to build Althingi (parliament).

The house is also close to all the necessary amenities, such as grocery shop, bakery, swimming pool, bank, post office. The main bus station is also just a five minute walk from the house.

Please note that this is a family home. We welcome families and groups but please note that parties are not allowed. Even though the house is located in the heart of the city it´s still surrounded by families and we want to respect that.

Other Things to Note:

There are a lot of public parking spaces around the house and in the streets near the house. There is also a supermarket just up the corner with a lot of public parking spaces. The charge is around 100 ISK per hour, from 9 AM - 6 PM, free on Sundays.

About Thora Sigurdardottir

My name is Thora and I´m a journalist/writer/traveller/mother/wife. Me and my husband, who is a chef, bought the house in 2011 after relocating to Iceland after a living in the Bahamas for a few years. We love renovating and this house is our passion.

Why Thora Sigurdardottir chose Downtown

For me it was love at first sight. It looked terrible since it had been vacant for almost ten years but you could sense the quality and the pride. It was originally built in 1882 by a congressman and the basement is made of the same stone as the parliament building. The wood came from a shipwreck... there was a ship called Jamestown that was transporting high quality wood from Maine, USA to Liverpool, UK. To make a long story short it ended up in Iceland and the precious wood was used to build houses - including mine.

The house is incredible and we´ve tried to stay as true to the origin as possible. It is 98% completed on the inside and this last summer we changed the roof so we are almost there. I plan to grow old in this house but in the meantime I welcome guests from all over the world that want to visit Iceland and have a vacation of a lifetime.

What makes this house unique

The location is fantastic. You are litterally downtown and everyting is within a walking distance.

Beautiful visit in Reykjavik!

  • 5 of 5

We were visiting Reykjavik to attend a music festival at Harpa and to bring in the New Year. Our stay at Thora's house could not have been better. The house is warm , lovely and decorated as though we chose every item (felt like home)! Thora and her husband could not have been more accommodating, warm and helpful. There were three couples in our party and we were all very comfortable. The location is perfect. We walked everywhere and could not have been happier!

Birthday stay

  • 5 of 5

Daughter took me to Iceland for my birthday. A friend of hers and her Mother (who also had a birthday at that time) came too. We loved the house. Plenty of room, great location, could see the Ocean from my bedroom. Both restaurants that we went to at night were close by, bakery and plenty of things to see within walking distance. We had no idea at the time who we were renting from but it became apparent that it was the renowned Chef of Iceland. Blizzard came out of nowhere but it made our trip that much more memorable. Thanks for the memory!!
