The Villa (5 beds) is located in the countryside of Siena, approximately 15 minutes walk from the famous 'Piazza del Campo' in Siena. It is located atop a hill, together with a private swimming pool and tennis court, offers splendid views over the city and surrounding countryside. It is nestled in a large family estate, with avenues of cypress trees, gardens, olive trees, where it is not unusual to see deer, pheasants and even rabbits.
The villa, which overlooks an old brick yard, offering: large porch furnished with sofa and armchairs and a table for outdoor dining, air conditioning, wireless Internet, safes, DVD, satellite TV, CD player, radio, fireplace , dishwasher, oven and microwave, barbecue, washing machine, iron and ironing board, hairdryer, baby cot. Supermarket and bus stop at about 50 m. Not require a car.
Since the whole family (me, my husband and two girls 6 and8) were staying two weeks we decided to splurge a little bit for comfort- and it was totally worth it! The owner greeted us with a spread of local deliciousness, and it just got better from there. If we decided to stay in we could swim, and then lounge under the awning on our patio on the super comfortable outdoor furniture. Or we could walk to the center of town in less than 15 minutes. We often took the little bus back (pollicino), since it leaves frequently from the Piazza del Mercato. The house itself is extremely comfortable- there's even air conditioning in the bedrooms, which is highly unusual in italy. I hope we can stay there again!
We enjoyed a very comfortable stay for a family of 5 with adult children. A nice welcome from the host with some local produce laid out for us. The villa is well equipped and was spotlessly clean. The views from the estate are fantastic - views of sienna from the house, and views over Tuscany from the beautiful pool. The location is ideal - to be staying in such a pretty place and yet within easy walking distance of the centre of Siena was perfect. We enjoyed many meals in Siena, and the recommendations from our host were well worth a visit. The villa is close enough to Siena to make it manageable without a car, but there is easy access to the road network and we enjoyed exploring the wider area also. I can't imagine a better base for our holiday, and we would come back without hesitation.
We had a wonderful time at Le Tortore. When we arrived we were greeted by Andrea and a large and delicious basket of fruit, salami and bread. The house was very well appointed -- great kitchen and bathrooms -- with plenty of space for the 5 of us. The grounds were very well maintained. The pool was very relaxing. The location was great -- the perfect combination of tranquil relaxation just outside the Siena city walls where we could easily walk to the center of town for exploring and great restaurants. Would highly recommend this house for anyone looking to explore Tuscany!
Everything in the description was accurate and the charming host Antonio was responsive and receptive to our needs and questions. The best thing about this villa is its location on the fringes of beautiful Siena. It's a 15-minute walk into the centre yet is just beyond the city walls and in a serene location. The house itself was perfect for our family of four, and we very much enjoyed eating breakfast on the terrace and adopting the estate cats. We mostly used the house as a base for day trips around Tuscany and for relaxing by the pool upon our return in the afternoon. We failed to find a poor restaurant in 10 days in Italy - all our random picks in Siena worked out. The location allows you to see Siena without the hoards, by getting in early or visiting in the evening when most of the visitors have departed. That gives you a chance to enjoy a more intimate Siena experience. The supermarket on the walk into town is excellent. If you have a car, take an early dinner in the nearby quaint village of Monteriggioni as the sun sets.
Our best holiday ever. 'Le Tortore' is an oasis of quiet comfort in an exquisite setting atop a hill of olive groves and shade trees. If it were miles from anywhere, it would still be a wonderful holiday home, but the fact that it is a 10-minute walk from the historic centre of Siena makes it the stuff of dreams. Our hire car sat un-needed for 5 days out of 7- a huge bonus for the 'designated driver'. Andrea and Thiago are generous, friendly hosts. The property is immaculate inside and out-the kitchen in particular is well-stocked with proper utensils, unlike many self-catering lets. The pool is gorgeous, and plenty large enough that sharing it is not any problem. The panoramic views are breathtaking. There are shy wild deer amongst the olive trees.
A couple of practicalities- a previous review had helpful details about local food shopping. The Conad on via Romana is excellent but accessible only on foot. The enormous and wonderfully-stocked Coop near the station is a 10 minute drive away but is not usually open on Sundays- so if arriving on Saturday afternoon it would be a good idea to head straight there to stock up. And you need cash for the breakage deposit.
Our only problem was our extreme reluctance to leave. Our return next year is already being planned.
Just 15 minutes walk from the famous 'Piazza del Campo', near the ancient city walls, 'Porta Romana'. The house is set in a large property, surrounded by greenery, surrounded by cypresses, olive groves and gardens, as well as pool (01/06-30/09) and tennis court. On the crest of a hill offers fine views over the city of Siena and the surrounding countryside. History, culture, sports and relaxation.
