About Louise Allen

We are an Anglo/Italian family with 2 children living in London, UK. The property was bought as a holiday home for the extended family living in Rome and London. We are particularly fond of the warm climate, beautiful coast line and countryside, and the fine food and wines of Puglia.

Louise Allen purchased this apartment in 2005

Why Louise Allen chose Monopoli

This property was bought as a holiday home for our Anglo/Italian family living in London and Rome. The older generation are from Monopoli and learnt to swim in the local coves. This particular property has proven to be a 'real find' because of the lateral space it provides and the central location, so close to the sea. The large roof terrace is perfect for outdoor dining in the evenings and observing the typical Italian 'passegiata' Although a car is useful to explore further afield, there is enough on the doorstep to enjoy the delights of Puglia.

Please note that free parking is available is available in the port car park 200 metres from the apartment. Only residents are allowed to park in the centro storico but you may drive through for unloading if necessary.

What makes this apartment unique

It is wonderful to be in the heart of the historic centre of a typical Puglian town with so many restaurants serving authentic Italian cuisine. The active fishing port and blue flag beaches are walking distance whilst there within half hour drive are many historic Puglian towns including Alberobello famous for its 'trulli',

One of nicest apartments we have stayed in in Europe

  • 5 of 5

Loved the spacious, uncluttered clean lines and high ceilings of the apartment. Everything worked. Wish we had stayed longer than a week. The surrounding area was full of life in the evenings and the train station is only 15 mins walk away for excursions. Having a rental car would not have been a very good idea from a parking perspective.

Owner's Response: We are so glad you loved the apartment and enjoyed your time in Monopoli. As the town is becoming much more popular with visitors, parking is a problem so we are going to try to get a parking permit which home owners in the 'centro storico' are entitled to.

Monopoli: A Holiday Highlight!!!

  • 5 of 5

We cannot adequately express our total pleasure with the apartment in Monopoli and Monopoli itself. Louise's apartment afforded us plenty of space. The rooms were very large and comfortable. The kitchen/dining area was particularly wonderful. We also had the outside area with plants, lounge chairs and a room that had a second refrigerator and a washing machine. The location was perfect. When we walked downstairs we were immediately in the flow of the old city. If we walked about 10 minutes, we could be in the more contemporary city. Parking seemed tricky at first, but we were able to use the parking area in the harbor. For us, this was the most genuine Italian experience we have ever had in our years of exploring Italy. We loved Monopoli and we hope we might visit this wonderful town again in the future.

beautiful and practical flat with a great terrace

  • 5 of 5

I stayed for the second time in this flat as it is new, clean, spacious and with the direct entrance to the big terrace from the kitchen (very rare in Monopoli, you typically have to take very steep stairs to access the terrace). Communication with Louise is easy and fast, the local girl waited for us as agreed and let us in the flat at 11am which was very convenient. As we love Monopoli and this flat is our favourite, we are definitely coming back again.

Delightful historic apartment

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in Louise's apartment, Casa San Pietro, for 5 days in August - sensational location in Centro Storico of Monopoli, terrific renovation of grand old building, everything we needed at our fingertips and close to lots of beaches plus easy access to other towns for day trips! Lovely restaurants locally too ! Wish we could have stayed longer!

Loved this apartment and Monopoli

  • 4 of 5

My friend and I chose Monopoli and this great apartment as our base to explore Puglia. Unfortunately, we had many rainy days during our 2-week stay, which was unusual for May 9-23. So we were unable to enjoy the very large, well equipped rooftop terrace as much as we would have liked, which, particularly at night, offered lovely views over the rooftops. The 2-bedrooms/2-baths at opposite ends of the apartment were perfect for us. We enjoyed our own space and privacy when needed, coming together in the well-supplied large kitchen/dining area, to enjoy meals, snacks, wine. We enjoyed our coffee/breakfast in the apartment each morning as we finalized the day's plans. We made use of the laundry facilities, which was a big plus when you're traveling light. This apartment could accommodate a larger group quite comfortably.

Kudos to Angela Saracino... we had pre-arranged for Angela to pick us up at the airport. After parking her car just outside the old walls next to the port, we walked with our bags into Piazza Garibaldi... it was like entering a movie set... and became our home away from home. Angela was an incredible resource of information, from where to eat the best pizza, to where to experience an off-the-tourist path dinner in a nearby town. The apartment is conveniently located, very clean with lots of light and space. It is walking distance to everything you could need or want (be mindful there are quite a few stairs).

As a base to explore surrounding Puglia, this apartment was perfect. One can leave in the morning to catch a train or bus to Polignano al Mare, Ostuni, Lecce, Alberobello, Locorotondo, Bari... all of which we visited during our stay... and have a comfy place at the end of the day to relax, have a glass of wine, and choose to either cook at home, or simply pick one of the many great choices in or near Piazza Garibaldi.

I feel compelled to promote a little business called "Apulia, la finestra sul mare," which is located on the way to Piazza Garibaldi. Owned by two sisters, Antonella and Paola, we rented bikes from them one day (an 8+ mile ride south to the little fishing port of Savelletri... recommended... rewarded with great lunch at Luna Rossa). Another day we booked a bike tour of 3 masserie in the countryside, led by Antonella, who is just so knowledgeable, warm and lovely. It was just the two of us and an incredible value. Do check out their charming shop!

Two big thumbs up for this apartment!

Monopoli is a vibrant fishing port. The old town with its castle, cathedral and churches offers a treasure trove of typical Puglian architectural styles, where the locals still far outnumber the tourists. Its local restaurants serve the gastronomic delights that Puglia is famous for; all within a 2 km promontory surrounded by crystal clear, bright blue sea. Monopoli's coastline is rugged with numerous rocky coves and small sandy bays whilst the long sandy beaches of Capitolo with its chic lidos are just a 15-min drive. A short trip through Puglia's olive groves dotted with 'trulli' leads to Alberobello, Cisternino, Lororotondo, Ostuni and the famous Castellana caves. Bari and Brinidisi are within an hour's drive and Lecce, 'capital of baroque', Matera with its renowned sassi, Trani, the 'pearl of Puglia', Grotaglie famous for ceramics and Castel del Monte are just over an hour away. The 18-hole San Domenico golf course and Fasano safari park are only 20 mins by car.
