I am a working musician. I grew up in Columbus, Ohio and currently live in Pennsylvania. I travel a lot for my work, and devote long hours to it, both in the studio and on the road.
Linda Bauer purchased this house in 2008
There is only one Lake Superior the largest freshwater lake in the world. As I drive to Grand Marais along the historic and scenic Highway 61 I am inspired by its panoramic views, coastal bluffs and craggy shores. I came up as a teenager and well into my 30's to go fishing with my step dad and fell in love with the area. When this property became available I grabbed it. The local people who come to visit can't believe we're within the city limits of Grand Marais. It feels like we're in the country. It really is 'nestled' in the woods.
So many of our guests at the sister to this house (McFarland House, see listing #355006) have identified 'location' as being one of the things they like best about the property. It is close enough to town that you can walk or bike into Grand Marais, yet far enough away that you feel like you live out of town. My step dad built this house - we designed it together, placing the windows to take advantage of the north light and views into the woods; putting a window seat into the master bedroom because I've always liked those. And the loft - I've always like spaces like those: closely tucked into the wood ceiling overlooking the great room to one side and the lake to the other. I decided on paint color and finishing touches and I especially love the quality of the light in the house. I feel I'll never get tired of watching the light and how it changes the house from dawn to dusk.
We stayed in this house for one week in August 2015. It was a perfect accommodation for my wife and I. The house is even nicer than depicted by the description and pictures. It's very new with beautiful wood floors and a fully equipped kitchen. The house is spacious, the bedroom has a very comfortable bed, the furnishings are great, and the loft would provide ample space for two or three children or a second couple if they don't mind not having a private bedroom. The location is a bit more than a mile from the business district - far enough to be away for quiet but walkable if you want some exercise.
The owners were excellent to work with. Lots of timely and thorough communication and very responsive to questions or needs. This was an excellent stay in all regards. Highly recommended!
I stayed at Charlie's Haven for one month this March 2015 while working in Grand Marais. The cabin is newly built on the same property as another older cabin that is also available for rent. Hardwood floors, large vaulted ceilings, new kitchen with stainless appliances. I didn't watch it but there is a nice television and DVD player. Master bedroom is spacious with a comfortable bed (queen). The upstairs portion of the cabin is a loft with some futons and I used it as a office space with desk - working every morning you can see the sun lift off of Lake Superior. There is a basement with laundry available and some garage space if you have bikes. Recycling and composting at the cabin. Even had a family of deer living in the back wooded area of the cabin while I was there - very charming!
The owner/manager, Linda was very helpful during my whole stay and communication was great. She has compiled a binder of Grand Marais sights and attractions. Just about one mile from the downtown area the location is great - about 15-20 minutes walk or just a couple minutes bike (trails the entire way).
Would recommend Charlie's Haven to anyone seeking a Grand Marais holiday!
I'm not sure when they built this place but it still looked & felt like new construction. I'm writing this like 9 months after we were there - just remembering now as I'm back on VRBO planning this summer's trip. Really full of light from white point and all the windows. Very clean. The house sits about a mile outside of town - we liked that bit of space & quiet - and able to get into Grand Marais in a couple minutes. When I looked at the pictures online I imagined there'd be ways to walk into the woods right out the back door, but no trail access there.
Charlie's Haven was a wonderful place to come home to after a day of skiing and winter adventure. The home had everything we needed for our winter family gathering. We made great meals in the extnsive kitchen and relaxed and shared time together inside, while the below zero temps outside raged on. We would stay again....
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Charlie's Haven. It is such a beautiful home that is close to town and yet it has a wooded site. It was our first visit to Grand Marais; this was a perfect place for us to stay and be able to tour the area. We especially enjoyed our visits to Grand Marais and the Gun Flint Trail drive. If you are looking for a place that feels like home, this home fits the bill. Clean, confortable, and modern upgrades.
I would highly recommend Charlies Haven. A beautiful home to stay in. The listing was exactly right on! It is about 1 mile from town, but yet nestled in the woods off the main highway. It was so clean and neat and had met all of our needs. The owner was so helpful and very informative before our arrival and during our stay. Loved the town of Grand Madrias and the harbor. Only about 40 min away from Canada, so we made a couple of trips there. Lots of hiking available and visiting the Falls was quite beautiful. It was a Grand Vacation!
The North Shore of Lake Superior is noted for both modest and spectacular waterfalls, lake vistas and cobble beaches. The Superior Hiking Trail is within easy access with many spur trails to places of unique natural beauty. The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) is 20 minutes away with an abundance of outfitters to set you up for a day trip or a week's camping experience. Horeseback riding is available close to town, as is Putt-Putt Golf, a recreation park with swimming pool, sauna and jacuzzi. The city of Grand Marais (pop. 1500) is a quaint harbor town. Summer pleasures include relaxing or strolling on the cobble beach, rock hunting (agates), guided fishing (coho salmon, herring and lake trout), day or evening trips aboard the Hjordis (a 2 masted schooner), sailing, kayaking, canoeing and by evening live music under the stars. Grand Marais hosts a number of summer festivals and is 35 miles from the Grand Portage Indian Reservation and the Canadian border. Museums and interpretive centers dot the shoreline. Spring is a great time to come up and see the many waterfalls. Winter visitors can enjoy easy access to cross country and downhill ski opportunities, snowmobile trails and snowshoeing. The Grand Marais Art Colony offers year-round programming ranging from various arts festivals, fused glass, pottery as well as the traditional painting and drawing classes. The North House Folk School hosts both a winter and summer solstice festival, UnPlugged Music Event and classes ranging from boat building to knitted silver jewelry. There's lots to see and do all year round, and each season has its own special allure.
