Fantastic Family Apartment with Indoor/Outdoor Pools & Gardens, Secure Parking

Bedrooms 2
Space 570 sq. ft.
Property type apartment
Minimum Stay 1 - 7 nights

About the property

2 bed. 2 bath apartment to sleep 4 close to shops, restaurants and beach

This property has a tourist licence issued by the Junta de Andalucia.

Based on the small community of Al Andalus Hills, this first floor apartment is fantastically appointed with everything for a comfortable holiday. The community is a 50/50 split between Spanish and English ownership which makes a secure and friendly base for your holiday. The community benefits from the use of a heated indoor pool in the winter, or a large outdoor pool and smaller children's pool set in beautiful gardens in the summer. This apartment has balcony views of Mojacar Pueblo.

We have many friends on Al Andalus Hills, so if you wish to visit in a group or with extended family, we would be happy to find other apartments so that you can have your own space, but enjoy a group holiday.

There is a good bus service to the nearby towns of Garrucha, Mojacar Playa and Vera Town. There are shops, restaurants & cafes and a supermarket within walking distance. The beach is about 15 minutes walk away. There is a traditional Spanish market in a local village most days of the week.

Almeria airport is a 45 minute drive, and Murcia is 1 hour 15 mins. Both airports are served well by budget airlines.

Golf Locally: The local courses are:

Desert Springs in Palomares, which is very friendly to visitors and have an open tee off on Weds am

Valle D'Este at Vera

But hubby likes Aguilon in Pulpi. Challenging, friendly and the pro (Victor) speaks great English.

About Karen Griffin

Dave and I live in the lovely South of England, with our adult children pinging back during Uni terms, but it does mean we can travel more as they are usually happy to house/dog sit for us. Whereas holidays used to be Spain and more Spain (just cannot get enough of the area!), we are venturing further afield in our middle age, enjoying Sri Lanka, Finland and Peru recently. We have made so many friends on Al Andalus Hills that there is always a reason to go back - especially for Dave who loves the golf!

We are both self employed. David in computers and I run a sign writing and wall art company. So taking a holiday means a drop in income. Owning our own property does allow us to take a number of breaks throughout the year at a lower outlay than booking standard holidays would.

Karen Griffin purchased this apartment in 2006

Why Karen Griffin chose Playas de Vera

Initially it was an investment. Somewhere that would be ours, that was good to travel to with young children. Spain ticked all the boxes in terms of journey time, accessibility, aided by the fact I speak some Spanish and have worked in the Murcia area in the past. We liked the idea of a property on a community with shared facilities (more security, less maintenance) and we were attracted to the Moorish design of the Al Andalus properties. We took the keys in May 2006, just as I was recovering from a nasty accident that would see me on crutches for the best part of 8 months. The children (then aged 11 and 9) and I moved out to Spain for the whole of the six weeks holiday, with a series of friends coming to look after me. It meant we were one of the first to move onto the complex and one of the first to get it full of fittings and turn it into the home it is today. We had six weeks to meet people and explore the area. It was the real upside of that dreadful year and there is no doubt the daily swimming was the best physio ever.

What makes this apartment unique

David chose our particular apartment off plan. We liked the south facing balcony and the fact we had views of the mountains and Mojacar Pueblo as well as the interior of the complex. One of the few properties to offer this and that view maintains its hold on us today.

The indoor pool offers a fantastic opportunity for those like me who feel the benefit of daily non-weight bearing exercise for rehabilitation, whatever the season.

We hope that all who visit enjoy the warm atmosphere of this still very typically Spanish area and enjoy coming back to our family apartment at the end of a lovely day.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Amicalement Sarah

Nice apartment in a disappointing area!

  • 2 of 5

We stayed in the apartment for almost a fortnight and were happy with the apartment itself. It was clean when we arrived, with lots of clean towels and spare bedding for the duration of our stay. It is a spacious two bedroomed apartment, which is plenty big for 4, but would have been a little cosy to have any more than that.

We stayed in November, which is when it should be at its quietest, but it was unbearably noisy at night time. This is a first floor apartment and you can hear everything that goes on upstairs. We heard entire conversations, every step that was taken and when their alarm went off in the morning, it woke everyone in our apartment! The walls are paper thin! This was the most disappointing aspect of our stay, as we began to count down the days until we left and got a decent nights sleep! That is not what should happen on a holiday!

We weren't made aware, until we were in Spain, that the usual process for lets is that the keys will be posted to your U.K. address. As this wasn't appropriate for us, we had to pay €20 for the caretaker to come out with the keys! An unexpected cost that should be mentioned on the listing.

The resort itself is unfinished. Building work stopped abruptly when the recession hit and so there are a lot of uncompleted blocks and a lot of waste ground around the complex. There is a great road network, with amazing pavements and cycle paths all around the complex, but the weeds are so large in places that you are forced to walk on the road side. It looks like no maintenance is done out with the complex to the infrastructure which was put in place. There are also not many services locally. Perhaps a dozen restaurants as well as a large Consum and Mercadona supermarkets. Eating out in the resort must be challenging in the summer months. You really need a car to stay here, as even the closest supermarket is a mile away.

We were disappointed that the boules playing area right outside the complex was so overgrown with weeds it was impossible to use. It was certainly not in the same condition as the photograph on the listing.

There was no communication from the owner during our stay. In all other holiday rentals we have stayed in, we have been contacted on our second day to ask if everything was alright. We had the contact number for the caretaker but didn't use it as we didn't want another charge!

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your feedback. It really does help other people decide where to stay to hear from a traveller. Therefore, I hope you don't mind me correcting a few misunderstandings. You are absolutely correct in saying that this area of Spain, like so many others, has suffered during the financial crisis. To be fair to the local Vera Town Hall, the area was absolutely immaculate and weed free in May, when there were some protests about the lack of communal work despite us all paying our taxes. Like many things, the one clear up has not continued, and we cannot keep updating our photographs, but our community do regularly ask the Town Hall to do their bit and tidy up the municipal areas. The €20 charge was because you wouldn't pay a deposit through this website. I cover the cost for my caretaker to meet you and give you the keys. Most guests leave the keys in the apartment at the end of their visit so there is no need for her to visit a second time until cleaning, but she needed to see you out to repay your cash deposit. It isn't on the listing as it is advised to pay the deposit on the website for visitors' own security. It is held by HomeAway in a secure account, not given to the owners and is a much safer system for everyone than paying it in cash. Al Andalus Hills is a completed community and has been for 10 years. The site next door was to be a municipal basketball/playground but Vera Ayuntamiento have never actioned their planning. As Owners on the neighbouring community there is little we can do about this. I am sorry you didn't find the welcome pack in the apartment. There are directions to the 20 or so eateries within a 15 minute walk of the apartment. Whilst not all will be open in November, there would be a wide range of different cuisines to choose from, and no car would be needed. Karen

Comfy, well quipped apartment but need a car to do anything

  • 3 of 5

We were given a warm welcome to Andalus Hills & shown everything to do with the apartment which a little old fashioned but was very well equipped and reasonably comfortable.

The place felt very safe being behind remote controlled security gates & there was plenty of parking

There is a lovely pool with grass surrounding it but so many restrictions, makes it boring for kids - no inflatables, no diving, no food around the pool etc etc.

The apartment block is set up about 25 minutes walk from the Vera Playa beach (big naturist resort, including people walking along the streets naked too!!).

Nothing much else going on in Vera Playa if you're looking for a choice of bars & restaurants.

There is a great supermarket with the best seafood & fish counter & very inexpensive wines.

To summarise, it wasn't ideal for us but if you enjoy walking or are happy to go everywhere by car, then you'll enjoy it.

Owner's Response: Don't forget the local bus. Just €1 gets you into Mojacar Playa or Vera Town. Fantastic twice hourly service throughout the year, that runs 24/7 during the peak season.

Great apartment

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay. The apartment was great value and well equipped.

The views were lovely from the balcony and we enjoyed breakfast and evening meals eating outside looking at the mountain views. The sunsets were fantastic over the mountains.

Karen was most helpful throughout the booking process. We would recommend this apartment / location and plan to come back soon.

Excellent Value

We booked the apartment as we were house hunting. Excellent value and spacious. Vera Playa is pretty much closed at this time of year but for our purposes it was great.

We have a very nice area, a very lovingly furnished house and a joyful couple caretaker encountered

  • 5 of 5

In the house we found everything we were looking for.

We can recommend this apartment to other guests at any time.

Perhaps we will come back again.

Something we must complain about: There is no WIFI or WLAN in the house. Therefore, we could not use the laptop brought along unfortunately. But only from the mobile expensive to go.

Unfortunately, due to the low season was not very busy. But that was not only in the plant but everywhere.

Best regards, Carmen Karger

Owner's Response: Thank you Carmen. We are trying to get WiFi installed in the apartment. In this area it is best by 'line of site' and we have been assured that there is a new antenna being installed on the Hills by Mojacar Pueblo which will give us 'line of site' from our balcony. We find it very frustrating too!

Classy place to stay,so comfortable, home from home

  • 5 of 5

Dealing with Karen, the owner, beforehand was a pleasure. She is so positive, and informative about the area, getting there etc. She has an amazing folder set up at the apartment with tips & recommendations, and a comment book that makes really interesting reading! The variety of things to do in the area is huge. However as sun-starved Irish we mainly craved the pool and beaches! Karen has everything ready made for a beach trip with seats, mats, umbrellas, beach towels etc. It was fab to just load up the car and go. Our favourite beach by a long shot was St Juan de la Torreos .We had some memorable meals in the region, best meal at night was at Bellavista, in Mojacar. Great food, unbelievable value, lovely owners who speak great english. The pool was a big draw too, with none of the usual vying for seats, as one has to bring chairs from the apartment themselves! Ingenious. Pool and adjoining area spotless. Met lovely people there too, a good mix of nationalities. Al Andalus Hills is a tastefully designed complex, where privacy is assured, the gardeners are working from morning til night to keep the area pristine! If I had to make a suggestion it would be to request the Spanish children and teenagers on site who congregate behind the apartment to hang out (all perfectly acceptable) to limit it to midnight perhaps...if I had sufficient spanish I would have spoken to them myself. However it was high summer and we took it on the chin, there was no rowdiness, just teenage banter.

Do yourself a favour and book Karen's apartment, its so well thought out, the en suite and separate bathroom with bath are ideal. We spent lots of time relaxing and eating on the balcony, the terrain is so different to home! The mini market is a short walk from the complex, with a bar and restaurant serving good food, made to order, by friendly staff. This place buzzed from morning until evening!

Close to the beach, Parque Acuatico, Supermarket of Consum, and restaurants, this two bedroom apartment makes an excellent base for a family holiday in the summer or a longer winter break. The south facing balcony overlooks Mojacar Pueblo. If you don't want to go the beach everyday, there is an indoor pool in the winter months, and a lovely outdoor pool set in well maintained gardens. There are lots of beaches within a 10 minute drive of the apartment, in addition to one long, natural sand beach in a 10 minute walk. The apartment has everything you would need for a family holiday - all the basic modern conveniences as well as pool toys, goggles and a wide range of English books. Your family will not be bored here! We struggle to drag our children away from the outdoor pool in the summer, but we love exploring the many local beaches, especially diving from rocks and snorkelling in the clear waters.

Other Activities: caving, waterpark, go karting

Golf: The apartment is only a few minutes drive from:

Cortijo Grande, Mojacar

Valle D'Este, Vera

Desert Springs, Palomares

All are very welcoming to non-members and Cortijo Grande does 'open Wednesdays' where individual players can turn up to tee off with others.

Ski: The Spanish Ski resort of Pradallano is a 2 hour drive away from the apartment, so it is possible to swim in the Med sea in the morning and ski in the afternoon. We recommend you take overnight gear, because we got snowed in!
