A rare find. This homey Spanish two bedroom cottage has high ceilings and old wooden beams. It is set in tropical gardens with a pergola overlooking the beach. The living room has two sofas, one converts into a double sleep sofa, allowing this property to sleep 5 people. For entertainment and relaxation there is a small library, TV with radio + DVD player + free Internet. The master bedroom has a queen bed and the second has standard single bunk beds (2). The cottage also has a dining room, kitchen, tiled bathroom with shower, and BBQ on the private covered terrace overlooking the sea with seating for 6+. The property has air-conditioning/heating as well as a wood stove. Choose hypoallergenic and/or down bedding. Both bath and beach towels are provided. There is a washing machine and iron+board for guests use.
Our unique BEACH COTTAGE sleeps 4 (3 beds), SEA VIEW COTTAGE sleeps 5 (3 beds + sleep sofa)
Both are set in a tropical garden with glorious sea views and a pergola-covered patio. The sea laps at the pebbly beach on secluded Charco Bay, where we snorkel and swim. A Moorish lookout tower is at the tip of our cove. Both rentals have two bedrooms, a bathroom with shower, a kitchen & living/dining room, plus separate terraces equipped for al fresco dining and sunbathing. Rent both for a large family or a group of friends, or rent separately. Good trekking options start from the cove, lead to adjacent villages with magnificent Mediterranean views. There's good fossil hunting along local trails that wind through Moorish terraced agricultural lands where artichokes and almonds used to be cultivated. The skyline of Alicante, 25 kilometres south on the coast, is visible from the property. The cultural town of Altea, once the haunt of Picasso and Miró, is approximately 20 kilometres north. You can fly to Alicante or take the AVE (bullet) train from Madrid which takes 2.5 hours. If you are here for any length of time, Valencia is a wonderful destination, only 1.5 hours away by car.
Betsy is tri-lingual thanks to her Norwegian father, American mother and having lived in Spain since she was 2. Betsy studied and worked abroad for 8 years in places far and wide, including Madrid, Oslo, London, Aix-en-Provence and Boston before she settled at Charco in 2001.
Betsy Floistad purchased this cottage in 1966
This place is unique. It is absolutely one of the last untouched enclaves along the Costa Blanca coast.
We accept pets and kids. The property is fenced. Free parking. Private access to the beach (just 50-60 metres away). You won't believe how nice it is here. Bring your kayak, your mountain bike or just your hiking shoes to take advantage of the region. Don't forget your water shoes for the rocky beach.
3 uger i december i 2016.

Oh my goodness, where to start? I knew I was going to have a lovely holiday from the first communication with Betsy. A perfect hostess who goes out of her way to make you feel comfortable and at home.
I have stayed in many places all over the World but can truly say that this has been one of my absolute favourites.
The grounds are gorgeous and my two little dogs had a wonderful time exploring and I was able to relax as the area is perfectly secure although they did enjoy teasing me by going a bit too close to one slightly steep bit behind a hedge.
The house is charming and beautifully furnished and had EVERYTHING one could possibly want.
Everything was of a lovely high standard including an extremely comfy bed, good bedding and wonderful pillows.
The gardens are beautifully maintained and the artistic touches added by Lise make them a joy to explore. My absolute favourite spot was the little table with the two red chairs overlooking the sea that was quickly named Cava Corner and was used every day for this purpose.
In summary, a perfect property in a stunning location with two of the loveliest hostesses one could hope to find and I cannot wait to come back.
My wife and I had a wonderful stay at Betsy's villa with our 16 month old daughter, Matilda.
We are new to Homes Away but from the outset Betsy was quick to respond and clear to communicate with, alleviating any anxieties we had about the process and making the booking process, and travel planning, a breeze.
Knowing that the turning for the villa is tricky to spot from the road the first time, we kept in contact by text and Betsy was kind enough to meet us on the main road to guide us in. The road down is a little bumpy, but nothing that our little higher car couldn't deal with. There are two adjoined villas in the large grounds of Betsy’s house. We stayed at the one furthest from the sea but that still has a lovely view, including of the sea, from it’s own private terrace.
The villa is beautifully decorated, spacious and very well equipped with everything you need to make the stay very comfortable, including cooking utensils and crockery.
Overall, the location is pleasantly secluded on a raised outcrop above the small pebbly beach. While the beach isn’t private, the wider grounds of the property and pergola right at the edge of the path down to the beach, make and it feel a bit like your own private beach.
Betsy was a great help settling us in and she has lots of great local knowledge of the best beaches, restaurants and bars and shops. She really understood the needs we had with being on holiday with a toddler and had plenty of suggestions to make the holiday as relaxing as possible.
We developed a very enjoyable routine during our five day stay; stroll down for a pre-breakfast swim in the sea, a lazy mornings followed by lunch at a beachfront restaurant in Villajoyosa before heading back to the villa for BBQ dinner on our private terrace.
All in all it was a very relaxing and easy holiday and we look forward to hopefully returning with our extended family – booking both villas side by side - next year!
Having read all the wonderful reviews of Charco Cottages I had very high expectations for the short break we had planned and we were not disappointed. From the first message I sent to Betsy when booking she could not have been more warm, helpful and efficient. We arrived after dark and could hear the waves lapping at the shore but had to wait until morning to confirm that ...yes it is even more beautiful than the photographs!
Sea View cottage was ideal for us. The bunk beds might be more suited to children but we (4 adults) were so comfortable we decided not to use the sofa-bed. As a holiday rental manager myself I am very fussy with accommodation for myself and was delighted to find that the cottage was so spotlessly clean and well equipped. The provision of both dishwasher and washing machine was an extra bonus.
The 'off road' track down to the cottages was not a problem for us, our small rental car coped fine, although we were so grateful that Betsy met us on the main road on arrival to help us negotiate it the first time in the dark! It all added to the adventure with the additional advantage of discouraging all but the most intrepid beach-goers from discovering what feels like a private cove. It's hard to know what to add to the contributions from previous reviewers who have so eloquently described the magic of Betsy's very special place. All I can do is endorse the previous comments. For us visiting my daughter who was studying in Alicante we could not believe our luck to find such an amazing place so close to the city.
Betsy is a fantastic host, nothing is too much trouble and she struck the perfect balance between making sure we had everything we needed and giving us our privacy.
The only negative was that 4 days was not enough!!.. Hope to be able to return and stay for longer.
If you love well cared for places off the beaten track and right on the ocean then this is the cottage for you. The photos are very accurate and one can tell that there is pride in how the cottage is maintained, right down to the little bouquets of fresh flowers in every room. We were greeted by Betsy and given an orientation to the property and the surrounding trails. I love being able to walk on trails right from a place where I am staying and there are numerous paths along the coast with vistas out to the Meditteranean. Betsy was kind and welcoming and went an extra mile to assist us when one of us lost a tooth. She is a generous and caring person. Her sister Lise is an artist and also a warm and authentic person who took time to talk to our children. The cottage has a picturesque tea house looking out to the sea and I was able to practice yoga at dawn every morning while listening to the turtle doves and other birds. There is also access to the bay and our kids spent hours skipping the flat round pebbles on the beach. The climate was more arid than I had expected and it was neat to see the cacti and other succulents, some of which were in bloom. It happened to be cool and rainy a few days we were there, which is unusual, but we were snug in the cottage with its heaters in every room. The cottage is very close to the sandy beach at Villajoyosa. We purchased groceries in town and cooked almost all our meals at the cottage or on the little charcoal BBQ outside. In the evening we enjoyed meals outside in the sun protected from the sea wind. Thank you so much Betsy and Lise for sharing your little corner of paradise with us.
Le logement est un peu à l'écart du village (piste de 200m pour y arriver), et ensuite aucun bruit, sauf celui de la mer...
Superbe vue avec terrasse où l'on peut manger en regardant la mer. Bref un séjour très reposant.
Our two cottages are a 20 minute drive to Alicante, a 5 minute drive to golden sandy beaches in El Campello or the ancient fishing town of Villajoyosa with its Thursday outdoor market, bodegas, restaurants of all cuisines as well as supermarkets for everyday needs. The Costa Blanca offers a variety of water and mountain sports. The lively resort of Benidorm is 10 minutes away. Charco Bay, protected by magnificent cliffs that frame the deep blue Mediterranean sea, provides an idyllic location for the ultimate relaxing holiday in either or both of our two charming cottages. Set in a lush tropical garden the cottages share private access to the beach and are havens of peace and tranquility. Al fresco dining on private terraces or in the shady pergola at the edge of the gardens offer unparalleled views of Charco Bay and its Moorish Tower. Amenities include flatscreen TV's with built-in radios & DVD players, free Internet, there's a satellite dish and dishwashers. The Sea View Cottage has a working wood stove.
