Ahhh...The Cabin Just A 10 Minute Walk To The Pristine Smith River!

Bedrooms 2
Space 864 sq ft
Property type cabin
Minimum Stay 2 nights

About the property

2 Bed/2 Bath Cabin In The Woods

Surrounded by the beauty of California's northern forests, and the sounds of Smith River echoing through the landscape (during winter) this cabin is the perfect getaway to nature and seclusion. And it's only a 10 minute walk or 2 minute drive to the pristine Smith River! Inside is a smoke free environment and pets are considered. Up to six happy guests can be accommodated here on almost an acre of land, with a pond, and completely fenced for your privacy. Offering two bedrooms, one with a king-sized bed and a 39" flat screen TV, and the other with a twin-over-queen bunk bed set (top bed has a 150 pound weight limit). The living room also boasts a queen-sized sleeper sofa, and there are additionally two bathrooms.

The living room is a great spot in which to unwind, with a large flat-screen television with DVD/VHS player and comfy seating. A range of books, games, DVDs/VHS and Sirius radio are provided for entertainment. A fully-equipped kitchen (no dishwasher) allows guests to self-cater in style, with complimentary gourmet coffee, tea and hot chocolate. Outside, a spacious wrap-around deck is the perfect place to gaze over the forests full of local flora, with an outdoor grill for alfresco dining and cooking. The host provides many pantry items such as olive oil and spices.

Air conditioning and heating are featured throughout the cabin, which, along with a wood-burning stove, will keep things cozy in every season. AND we supply the wood! A washing machine and dryer will make even longer stays comfortable, and guests will also have access to a two car garage. All linens and towels are provided by the host, as well as shampoo, body wash and laundry detergent.

The Cabin is in a remote area so cell phone reception is variable depending on your service provider and phone. There is a land-line available.

There are many times when it's foggy at the coast but it's sunny at The Cabin! It's just a 10 minute walk or 2 minute drive to the pristine Smith River. It’s the largest free-flowing (no dams) river in the state, producing the largest Steelhead and Chinook salmon.

Dogs considered, please tell me how many, how old and how large/small. No cats please.

From The Cabin it’s just 11 miles on scenic Hwy 199 to Redwood National Park and Jedediah Smith Redwood State Park. Some of the tallest trees in the world reside here and there are many trails to explore. Drive or bike through Redwood National Park on unpaved Howland Hill Rd. There are massive Redwood trees!

Like the ocean? We’re only 22 miles away as you drive through the Redwoods and Crescent City. In Crescent City there is Battery Point Lighthouse. In fact, there are many lighthouses along the coast. There is a great view from these lighthouses to do some whale watching. Gray whales migrate from December through May. You may also see Orcas and Humpback whales. Northern California and Oregon have some of the most beautiful coastlines. Yet, on those foggy coastal days, Gasquet is usually in the sunshine.

Great Fishing -- Along with Steelhead and Chinook, the Smith also has runs of Silver salmon, Coho and sea-run cutthroat trout. The Chinook runs start in late August, going through late December, with its peak in November. Steelhead starts their runs in early December and goes through March, with their peak in January. The Smith River flows through some of the most beautiful scenery in California. From Six Rivers National Forest through Jedediah State Park, people say that it’s hard to decide which is better, the scenery or the fishing.

About Diane Moller

I grew up in New York, Diane grew up in L.A. We both moved to the general area because we both love the mountains, the ocean and the many rivers that run through here. When we decided to get married we had to get more property for Diane's horses. So I had to leave this beautiful property...but now we get to visit it!

Diane Moller purchased this cabin in 1995

Why Diane Moller chose Gasquet

I was renting a place in Crescent City but I wanted to own my own house. Even though I worked in Crescent City it was too expensive to buy there. So I checked out other possibilities and came across The Cabin. After buying it and living here, I realized what a gem I had. I can take my Jeep on the many logging roads and get the views of the snow covered mountains and the ocean. I can walk to the Smith River. Then there's the massive Redwoods just minutes away and of course the coast. And when Crescent City is fogged in The Cabin is usually in the sunshine!

What makes this cabin unique

I drove to Crescent City to work 5 days a week and when it was foggy at the coast, I would just drive into the sunshine when I came to Gasquet. Then I could relax on the large deck in the woods overlooking the little rejuvenating!

Trip Cs....Cozy, cute, and charming!

  • 5 of 5

Owner is very communicative and gave detailed instructions. We were a group of young professionals from the SF Bay Area. When we first drove in, we were impressed with the private lot, deck and the surroundings. The cabin is VERY well-maintained. It looked fairly new or recently renovated. The first thing we did was try out the wood-stove (with free wood!) The layout of the cabin is perfect for cooking and entertaining. The kitchen is FULLY stocked with seasonings/pots/pans/dishes. There are even movies and cds in the TV cabinet. Nothing like coming back after a long-hike in the Redwoods to a wood-stove and wine!! (we brought the wine)

We all wished we had planned an extra night. Wish it was closer than 7hrs away so we can visit often. It's such a fantastic value. Great for families and people seeking an escape from technology!

Beautiful place secluded in the woods. Wonderful trails close to all the old growth. Beautiful hikes and nice drives. Home owner provided way more then needed. We would highly recommend this for a peaceful getaway. Our kids had a blast playing in the back yard little pond.

We loved Diane's place. Quiet street able to jump across the highway to visit Smith River and also to take a run. Perfect central location for visiting the Redwoods! We were able to get off early to hike to Boy Scout Tree and had an amazing day!

Cabin in the Woods

We enjoyed our stay. The cabin was well stocked. The yard was great for the dogs. Our stay was short, but we still saw some beautiful territory and had a sunshine day.

National Scenic Hwy 199 follows the Smith River. There are many pull-offs along the Hwy where you can park and take the trails that go down to the river. The Smith River offers swimming, fishing, rafting or kayaking. The best part is, since there are so many places, is that you can find a place to have all to yourself!

There's a nice auto tour route through Redwood National Park on Howland Hill Rd. We enjoy this road most in the winter when there's less people and all the trees are fresh and clean from the rain. If you like hiking, the trails are marked and well groomed. One of our favorite hikes is the Boy Scout Tree trail. It's 5.8 miles round trip through the redwoods to get to the impressive 2,000 year old Boy Scout Tree. You can also bike along this road, it's quite spectacular! Next stop if your headed towards Crescent City is the Elk Valley Casino.

If you like hiking, the Pacific Coast Trail is also spectacular! Our favorite beaches are between Harris Beach and Whaleshead in Oregon. Many of the sunsets are worth waiting for.
