The quaint hamlet of Kambia has magnificent uninterrupted views of Souda Bay, olive and pine covered hills and valleys, and the White Mountains. The Sunset Villas, Villa Eleni and Villa Sarah, are located at the highest point in Kambia with one of the most enviable vantage points on Crete. Nestled on a terrace cut into the mountainside, the land drops away below the villas which allows for an exceptional setting for the entire property. The last 250m of the access road is winding and steep in places but the dramatic views and glorious sunsets make it more than worthwhile.
The Sunset Villas have been carefully furnished and equipped to a high specification as quality second homes for their English owners, and are therefore not a typical “holiday let”. The quality and comfort will appeal to the escapists amongst you who are looking for a rural retreat with panoramic views, yet only 6 minutes by car to an excellent selection of tavernas, shops and sandy beaches.
The interior of Villa Eleni is just as lovely as the outside surroundings and every effort has been made to ensure that you have a relaxing and comfortable holiday. The light and airy living room and master bedroom suite each have double doors that open out onto the pool and dining terraces. Magical views are revealed when the shutters are opened in the morning. A traditional stone archway leads though from the living room and dining area into the very well equipped modern kitchen, which in turn leads up a small flight of stairs to a hallway with doors to the bedrooms and main bathroom. The elegant décor throughout is predominantly pale cream coloured wood and wrought iron furniture with pretty pale green and cream accessories including candles, cushions, hurricane lamps, and bedding.
On the long, hot summer days that Crete is famous for the pool terrace at Villa Eleni often enjoys a much needed cooling breeze thanks to its elevated position, and it has been furnished with sun-beds and umbrellas, poolside drinks tables, and a barbecue. Adjacent to the pool terrace is the dining area which is equipped with a wrought iron and mosaic tiled dining table and matching cushioned chairs. Shaded by a cypress wood pergola, this is the perfect place for al-fresco dining whilst looking out over the sparkling blue bay during the day or the twinkling lights from the coastline below at night. In keeping with the gorgeous location, apart from a number of flower beds and clay pots planted with bougainvillea, yucca palms, chrysanthemums, bottle brush plants, Hottentot fig, cyclamen, margarita daisies and lemon and nectarine trees,, the land surrounding the villas has been left in its natural state with rocky outcrops, almond and olive trees, and an infusion of wild flowers in Spring
Villa Argiro is exclusively booked by Frankie Miles. Frankie runs Villas Crete Holidays which is a registered Tourist Office, based in Hampshire, England and Almyrida, Crete. Whilst most travel companies cover many different countries and/or areas of Greece and Crete, we at Villas Crete Holidays only work in the North West of Crete and we specialise in the Apokoranas region, just east of the historic Venetian town of Chania. The Apokoronas (including the villages of Almyrida, Kalives, Kokkino Horio, Plaka and Gavalohori) has long been a popular destination for holiday makers seeking a typically Greek seaside resort area that has many amenities, but is far removed from brash tourism. The area is renowned for its sandy beaches, crystal clear turquoise water, stunning views of Souda Bay and The White Mountains, excellent tavernas, and archaeological sites.
Frankie is very hands-on at Villas Crete Holiday. She has worked with rental villas on Crete for more than 18 years and has written the best selling guide book "Crete on the Road". The book includes detailed directions and information to all the major tourist attractions, as well as many hidden sites. Also in the book is the only existing map of the National Highway showing all of the entrances/exits and distances. Frankie’s unrivalled knowledge, love of the island, and attention to detail is now being fully put to use to guarantee a fantastic holiday for our guests. Before Crete, Frankie lived all over the world. She initially came to Crete for 1 season after 12 hectic years in New York working various jobs including: office manager for the band Simply Red; production assistant to the singer Paul Simon; and booking bands such as Guns N’ Roses for The Limelight nightclub. All of this was no match, however, to the fantastic weather and food, the warmth of the Cretan people, and the unrivalled natural beauty of Crete. When (very occasionally) not working, Frankie spends time helping the stray animals on Crete.
Located at the top of a hill Villa Eleni has the best views that you will find anywhere. In addition is beautifully furnished and immaculately kept.
The amenities are excellent and with only one close neighbour the privacy is pretty good.
Only a few minutes by car to the tavernas and mini markets in Plaka, and the beaches, shops, and tavernas in the family friendly village of Almyrida.
Villas Crete Holidays truly are the Apokoronas Specialists as unlike other offices, 3 of the 4 members of our expert team live and work here all year round which enables us to always have completely up-to-date information about the villas, local facilities, and tourist attractions. We can help you with all aspects of your holiday including good value, reliable car hire, airport transfers, local information about shops, beaches, tavernas etc, detailed driving directions or walking directions for many routes. We can also arrange private boat hire, private boat trips, private sight-seeing flights, horse riding, water-skiing, big game fishing, guided walking, and guided coach excursions. Our office staff speak English, Greek, and a little French, and have a vast list of local contacts, and our representative in resort also speaks some Italian.
Both the company itself, and Frankie's book have been featured and recommended in articles in major British newspapers including the Sunday Mail and the Sunday Telegraph, as well as smaller publications such as Greece Magazine.
Most importantly, because we handle many villas, in the unlikely event that there is an unforeseen problem at your villa, we can usually offer you an alternative villa (although this cannot be guaranteed in high season).
We have many years experience working in tourism on Crete, and most importantly this experience is specifically related to villa rentals, which needs a very different area of expertise to other types of tourism such as walking holidays, or package holidays for the masses. We use all of our knowledge and local contacts to ensure that your holiday goes off smoothly from start to finish, from first booking the villa that is most suitable for you, to your arrival back home. When you are in resort, we are available during office hours for information, and 24 hours a day should you need medical assistance, yet we remain unobtrusive.
The organic taverna at the famous glass blowing workshop in Kokkino Horio is only 2.1km from The Sunset Villas and has sea and mountain views. During the day you can watch recycled glass being blown in the traditional manner into amazingly beautiful products including lampshades, ornaments, decanters, plates and bowls. 100m further into Kokkino Horio is the family-run taverna on the main square that is shaded by weeping willow trees, has delicious food, and very friendly owners (Zacharias and his son Yiannis) who know everything about the village and the surrounding area. During the summer months there are occasional live Cretan music nights at the taverna, which are a lot of fun. Kokkino Horio (“red village” in Greek) was the main village set for the film “Zorba the Greek”. There are little whitewashed houses and narrow streets that wind around the village centre. A third taverna with views has recently opened on the outskirts of the village. The main square in Plaka is still very much the focal point of village life. There are lovely shady mulberry trees under which the locals sit to watch the world go by whilst enjoying a delicious meal or even just an ice cold frappe. Plaka was one of the original village sets for the film “Zorba the Greek” and it still has quaint whitewashed houses and narrow streets leading off from the square. The modern outskirts of the village have expanded recently as have the facilities, which now include 6 tavernas, 2 well stocked mini markets, an Italian restaurant, a hair dresser, and 7 cafes.
The lovely village of Almyrida is only 8 minutes by car from Villa Eleni, and is built around a pretty crescent shaped sandy beach, with a small fishing harbour at the eastern end. The beach is very shallow and safe, which is good news if you have children or are not a strong swimmer. Lining the beach are 11 excellent tavernas, 6 cafés, 2 bars, 2 bakeries, a wonderful jewellery shop, 4 mini-markets, 6 gift shops, a pharmacy, an organic fruit and vegetable shop with a deli counter, an off-license, a butcher, a nail spa, a body wellness spa, a hairdresser, and 3 real estate offices. Also in Almyrida there is a scuba diving office, a water sports centre which rents out kayaks, windsurfers and catamarans, and Villas Crete Holidays for tourist information, boat trips, horse riding, guided walking tours, and guided coach excursions.
A few minutes by car from the villa, there are a huge variety of archaeological sites and traditional villages with wonderful tavernas. There is also an interesting selection of small craft centres and museums, including glass blowing in Kokkino Horio, lace makers in Gavalohori, and silk makers in Kalamitsi. For those of you looking for even more activity, the historic town of Chania is only 45 minutes away by car.
Cooking classes and wine tasting set at a local winery can be taken by those of you who are interested. Guided walks led by experts in mountaineering and/or flora and fauna can also be arranged. For those of you who prefer to venture out on your own, a copy of the guide book 'Crete on the Road' by Frankie Miles comes with every villa. The book contains detailed directions to many well known and hidden sites, opening times and prices for all attractions, taverna recommendations, and the only existing map of the National Highway showing the exits and entrances.
Crete has everything you that could possibly want from a holiday: soaring mountains that are snow capped from November to June, many great walking trails including Europe's deepest gorge, ancient archaeological sites and Minoan palaces, quaint villages, sparkling clear blue seas with tavernas serving freshly caught fish, golden beaches, glorious wild flowers in the Spring, and a variety of delicious foods which are all made from healthy home grown produce.
As incredible as the island is, it is the Cretan people who will make your holiday truly memorable. Descendants of the Minoan's, one of Europe's earliest civilizations, and shaped by centuries of struggle against oppression, the Cretans are as rugged as the mountains, fiercely independent but passionately friendly.
Villa Eleni is located in the heart of The Apokoronas Region just east of the beautiful town of Chania. With its stunning Venetian harbour, quayside bars and restaurants, what better place to relax and watch the world go by. In the narrow streets behind Chania's harbour you will find tavernas, bars, the famous covered market, and many local shops selling handicrafts, textiles, jewellery and hand made ceramics. Visit 'Leather Lane' for outstanding hand made leather bargains.
The climate of Crete is a temperate Mediterranean climate and the weather is characterized by long hot, dry summers and mild winters. The Spring can be warm and sunny during the day but still have cooler evenings and is perfect for walking, birdwatching and looking at the wild flowers. All in all Crete is absolutely perfect for your Villa holiday.
