About Stefan Bala

My wife and I have lived in Iznajar, Andalucia for 8 years and spent 6 of those lovingly restoring this abandoned olive mill.

We have 3 children, all of whom attend the local primary school and feel supremely lucky that we found this stunning spot.

Stefan Bala purchased this chateau / country house in 2001

Why Stefan Bala chose Iznájar

We knew we wanted to leave London and wanted a little adventure. We spent 5 years or so travelling all over Spain and France but something just felt right when we saw this huge building that offered plenty of possibilities. It was just one of those cases when something you see just feels right.

What makes this chateau / country house unique

The size and location. I wanted somewhere where i could turn up the radio on Sunday mornings and no one would complain.

Also the Spanish people. I have never met a more friendly and inclusive bunch of people and have made some of my best friends here in Iznajar.

Guestbook comments from the owner

The villa is beautiful and was perfect for the weekend. The rooms were set up perfectly just as we requested. We were greeted by Andres from the moment we got there and he took care of all of our needs. The alcohol was all ordered and set out, the fire was burning in the main dining room, which was amazing. The arrangements of the band and chef were all sorted to perfection and I had nothing to worry about the whole weekend.

The chef was amazing, the food was delicious and everyone was so impressed. The transfers and transport was sorted and timed to a tee! Manolo, our coach driver was fantastic.

The breakfast was amazing and so impressive - completely exceeded our expectations and the staff at the villa are a credit to you.

I hope the villa was not in too much of a mess, we did try and clear up most of the hen related items!! Im sure Andre will fill you in on what they were!!

The whole weekend was arranged to perfection, thank you so much for making it what it was and helping me with the arrangements from the start. Thanks also to Andre who couldn't do enough to help us.

It will be an unforgettable experience!

We intend on returning to the villa - hopefully during the summer -I will contact you shortly for a quote - i know all of the girls thought the same thing - and a reunion is probably on the cards.

Again - thanks so much to ALL at the Cortijo.

Location

Car: necessary

Cortijo Andalus is perfectly placed to take in all the major sites of Andalucia being just an hour from Granada (the Alhambra), Cordoba (the Mezquita) and Malaga (and the coast) and an hour and a half from Seville and from the ski slopes of the Sierra Nevada.

Closer to hand (about 40 minutes away) is Antequerra and Iznajar and Rute are just 5 minutes drive away. These 2 villages provide supermarkets, banks, reataurants and bars.

Iznajar is a beautiful white washed village that is perched on a mountain and surrounded by the largest lake in Andalucia. It is a beautiful place for walking, cycling, fishing and bird watching.

As well as being able to organise airport transits, chefs, musicians (from jazz to Flamenco), massage and yoga therapists (see links page) to visit the cortijo we can also arrange for some spectacular days out. These include deep sea fishing for groups of between 6 and 24 and activity days (horse riding, quad biking, paint balling and kayaking)

Relaxation oasis

  • 5 of 5

Amazing is the best word to describe this house. Having our wedding there it was magic, almost fairytale like. I can say it was one of the best holidays ever for all our family and our friends. Perfect place to just relax and forget about crowded and noisy cities, surrounded only by olive trees and wild birds. Plenty of beautiful little towns and cities to visit just 1h-1h1/2 away(car it's a must). A few little village restaurants in the area with amazing food and surprisingly cheap (recommend El Charcon).

Many thanks to Bruno and Stefan, much appreciated all their efforts to make our stay such enjoyable.

A+ for the overall experience.

We arrived at 3pm and although the villa wasn't quite ready for us, the cleaners where still there, we where able to use the pool area whilst we waited. In general the property is beautiful but it really needs some investment, some of the furniture was quite shabby, half the fans where broken and temperatures where hitting 45 during our stay so it was difficult to sleep at night. Only 3 sunbeds! we where a party of 19! we where told we could use the mattresses fro. the ground floor sitting room but they where heavy to shift & you could only lie them flat. Most of the outside seating was cast iron but had very insubstantial seat pads so not very comfy - particularly for our elderly relatives. The cooking facilities also need updating, the main kitchen had a large gas range cooker but you couldn't use the oven and the gas went out if you used more than a couple if the rings. There was a small electric oven but it took forever to cook & burnt or under cooked the food. In the downstairs 'suite' there was an awful sewage/drain smell that remained for the whole 10 days even though we complained. Bruno who was the site manager was completely lovely & did what he could to make our stay enjoyable but it's quite obvious that the villa has had little investment and is in desperate need of a refurb - 1 toaster worked out of the 4 kitchens, fridge door fell off, rat running across sideboard.....apart from that it's in a beautiful yet isolated (need a car) location & could be amazing with a bit of care & not too much money to rectify the problems.

Owner's Response: Hi Jennifer I am really sorry that your stay was spoilt by the inadequacy of the facilities at the cortijo. This, of course, should not be the case and i will be making a trip to the cortijo before the end of this year to make sure that all the things that you mentioned are put right. It was Brunos first season at the house and it sounds like there was lack of communication between myself, Bruno and the outgoing manager, who had been there for the last 5 years.

A wonderful family holiday in a superb property

  • 5 of 5

This property exceeded our expectations in many ways. It is a beautiful, tastefully converted olive mill set in spacious grounds. The separate apartments made it very easy for our different family groups to feel comfortable, whilst the large outdoor and indoor eating areas allowed us to eat together and socialise. The apartments are all large, beautifully decorated and very comfortable. The property was spotlessly clean and well looked after - a leaky shower was quickly dealt with by the lovely Andres, the property manager.

The owner, Stefan, who is the initial contact, was extremely helpful and the booking and payment was very efficient. Andres ensured that all the details we required to make our holiday perfect were instigated. I highly recommend the preordering of drinks from the wholesalers, the breakfasts we had provided by Francisco and the wonderful tapas meal provided by Francisco one evening.

The cortijo is set in the lovely Andalucian countryside but it is only a short drive to the pretty little town of Iznajar. The tour of the castle is interesting and worth doing. The vast lake dominates the area and the teenagers enjoyed the pedalos and kayaks on offer down at the beach.

Between our group of 19, we visited the cities of Cordoba, Granada and Marbella. They were all beautiful - the ancient walled city of Cordoba is well worth a visit as is the Alhambra in Granada.

We mainly ate in, with there being such a large group of us - barbecues on the 3 provided at the property. We ate out at Hotel Caserio one night which is on the edge of the lake with lovely views of the sun setting over Iznajar. The meal was very good and the setting fantastic. We also ate at Casa Juana which was of average quality.

Overall, this was an excellent holiday, in a wonderful property. Our family, ranging in age from 10 to 86, all agree that we would recommend this property to families of all ages and we have told all our friends what a great place it is.

Stunning villa in a gorgeous, unspoiled location

  • 5 of 5

This was our second stay at Cortijo Andalus with a group of our friends and as previously we were all incredibly impressed with the property. The owner is very helpful and the contact locally is always going out of his way to help in whatever way he can. The property is spacious, beautifully appointed, well equipped and somehow manages to strike a perfect balance between being authentic and child friendly. On both trips we have had the optional Tapas chef for a night and the food he prepares in simply delicious.

We cannot recommend this property highly enough!! Obviously we have booked again for next year!!

We had the most amazing week at this wonderful Villa in the heart of the beautiful Andalusian Countryside. Tucked away amongst the olive groves, it was everything we could have wished for and more. Great location, beautiful Villa & pool, space, privacy, well maintained. Our party was 22 people of ages 4 - 82 and everyone was happy ALL the time. Tons of space, plenty of comfort and Andreas was great at sorting us out. I had a wonderful party there for my Birthday and the chef was great (tapas & Paella - highly recommend). Andreas also helped stock our fridge before we arrived and was generally at hand to answer all our queries. We will most definitely be back ! Highly recommend
