Family vacation at the peak of the mountain

  • 4 of 5

This awesome place served us well. We arrived late in the evening after a lengthy drive from San Jose and woke up to the most impressive view one can ask. The owners are very responsive and the handiman on place is ready to help in a short notice. The activities nearby include Hiking in the jungle, (recommend only with a guide), zip-line, hot springs all within 30-60 minutes drive from the place. Speaking about the drive...highly recommend to have 4X4. This amazing view is only possible from a high point and the last 40 minutes to the house is a dirt road that will put you car and your driving ability to the test. If you arrive at night, the last leg will take you from the lake to the top of the mountain in a 25 degrees slope. The owners did right and placed stones on the road to increase the traction, however, at 3/4 of the way there is a sharp left and the slope increases to about 35 degrees. At that point, in a dark night, your headlights will face the opposite mountain and you need to be careful making that turn. I highly recommend that a nice light reflected sign will point the way, if a lamp post is not available. Adding some guard rails at that point will be great.

The rooms are specious and the yard is spectacular. I wish there was a laundry machine too.

Overall- it is highly recommended.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for the lovely review. Just to be clear to other potential guests, the dirt road is only the last 7 km and is very easy to drive. It can be bumpy at times throughout the year, but was just recently graded, so is quite nice now. Grading is done several times a year. Actually, we are off the beaten path which is what makes this place so charming and special! It is also not difficult to drive up the road to the home and the S in the road is fine if you use bright lights. There is a laundry area centrally located next to the homes as well.

The pictures make this property look amazing, but don't do justice to the actual beauty once you arrive. The views from this property are amazing. I could have sat outside and just looked around the entire time, but there are so many activities to do nearby so we didn't. Be sure to have 4 wheel drive to get to the property.

Great place to unwind and bird watch after a day adventuring in lovely El Castillo .

  • 4 of 5

We had a wonderful time in El Castillo. We definitely recommend you spend more than just a few days there. There are so many things to do, it’s tough to fit them into fewer than 5 days. While it is not imperative that you rent your own vehicle (4x4), here is what you should understand: private shuttle from Liberia took 3 ½ hours on paved highways with a skilled driver. When you arrive at the entrance to the Arenal Rainforest, there is a dirt road full of large potholes which takes you to El Castillo. It's about a 5 mile drive that takes 45 min to an hour. Majestic Lodge is deep in the jungle. What's more, if you stay in any of the VRBO's such as "Pie in the Sky", these are all located at the top of a long, narrow, winding, and rocky driveway. Most shuttle vans cannot get up this driveway. There are many transportation options in town (regular shuttle service, private taxis, and if you get in good with the locals someone will usually give you a lift). Don't miss these things: La Mesa de la Mama is a perfect place for breakfast and has excellent WiFi; Michael owns the Hostel in town is a wealth of knowledge and very friendly; Benedict is the town chef and runs a couple restaurants such as Fusion; and La Ventanita de Kelly has incredible food and beverages. Here’s what we loved about Pie in the Sky: incredible birdwatching; the house is gorgeous and spacious; the town of El Castillo is full of very friendly and wonderful people; the best Zip Line in Costa Rica (Sky Trek) is less than 10 minutes away; the view of the volcano from the house is incredible; the pool is beautiful; Here are some things that would have made our trip even better: a welcome binder about the workings of the house including how to work the TV, coffee maker, and dish soap; brochures or phone numbers for local businesses and transportation options. It’s quite grueling to get to Pie in the Sky no matter how you come; a welcome basket would have been very appreciated. A few more kitchen staples such as salt and pepper, bug spray, and bag clips; guide or birding books in the house would be great. WiFi connection was intermittent. We were really only able to use our phones when we went into town. If we would have written this review after only a couple days there, I think our rating would have been lower. We were first-timers to Costa Rica and had much to learn. But Pie in the Sky, El Castillo, and Costa Rica grew on all of us. It is an amazing place. We would love to come back often.

Great place in Arenal

  • 5 of 5

This property is very nice, it has been made with good taste, in spite is a rustic place, you see all the details with very good materials, well finished. Beds are comfortable, and you are plenty of spaces. The spot is incredible, after been in this place you don´t need to move anywhere to check the lake or the volcan, you have both of them from the house.

Access, certainly is a little rough, I do not consider you need a 4 x 4, but a SUV or a car with enough power, mainly to access the main entrance, since has a short slope. You have a rustic road to get to the house for about 20 min, but for me is very nice since is part of the adventure, and the exclusivity you are looking for, the slope to get to the house, well... if you like panoramic view you need to be high!

The property is a group of few houses, about 4, so if you are a bigger group is perfect to stay all in the same place.

NAncy was very kind, and provide us with all the information we could need.

During our stay, there was a blackout, and was very nice get to our house and find we have electricity thank you to the power generator they have.

Definitelly I would stay next time, thank you Nancy!!

Great Family Stay at Majestic Lodge

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful stay at the Majestic Lodge! Two families of 5 with children from 10-16 years old for 3 nights. The Lodge is in a great location near all the events you would want to do in Arenal (hiking, ATV, Zip, Ecological, hot springs, Fortuna waterfall). Great CR breakfasts in the morning! The Lodge is about 3 hours from Liberia airport. Nancy was extremely helpful in coordinating all our activities and providing directions, info etc. We leased the whole B&B and it was very accommodating. Beautiful hard woods and we used 6 of the 7 bedrooms. Pool and the hot tub were nice after a long day of activities and to keep the kids at bay. Personal favorite was the beautiful and relaxing deck overlooking the lake. I was a little concerned about the directions but soon learned that CR is very undeveloped with few roads and directions are all driving towards cities/towns - it was pretty easy to get to Majestic from the airport and overall the roads in CR are better than I expected. The dirt and composite road the last few miles is a little rough but part of the adventure and you can just take it as fast or slow as you like - 4WD nice but not required. We did not see anywhere we would have rather stayed and we would DEFINITELY go back to Majestic!!! Thanks Nancy and Dan - Pura Vida!!!

A majestic beauty

  • 5 of 5

Pie in the sky was where our family of 6 comfortably stayed! What an awesome awesome place! 4 wheel drive is indeed a must...oh the roads! No car troubles for us though! It was suburb in every way imaginable! Yes and we had 2 of 3 days in the sun and clear majestic views too! We never personally met Nancy but she was fantastic to deal with! Thanks Nancy! Your staff was great our place was even greater! Only downsides I can think of was no washer and dryer yet I saw them? No heat in the pool..otherwise great great great.

Met one of the Majestic owners...Walt at Howlers bar one night...the town is small (do I say village?) and everyone knows each other..,from meeting Walter who owned some awesome pieces of real estate, to Michael, the volunteer waiter at Johns Pizza ( best ever! gotta go! Have cash though!) who owns the hostel to Leelander the awesome cowboy who took us on a sunny once in a lifetime wonderful trail on really great horses -apaloosos- to a waterfall and oh our delicious catered lunch meal by Nancy's daughter! We zip lined, did hot springs, went to the observatory area, (admission steep for our carload of 6) and ate in practically all the restaurants! I think trip advisor said there were 7 restaurants in EL Castillo! My family even walked to hotel Margot in the rain! We even ate a few breakfasts at home and grilled chicken at the house and yeah there was propane for the grill...all the comforts of home! (well maybe plusher towels back home!) it's not the USA but it's up there on my top lists of adventures! Be prepared with rain slickers squeaky shoes and weird bugs but also embrace the beauty of the lake and the volcano the locals and the free roaming cows and horses and the simple life!
