About Peggy Cavanaugh

My husband and I have been using the cottage as our vacation home for the past twenty-five years waiting for the day we could retire permanently to Northport. That day arrived 2011 when we built our new home across the street from the cottage.

Peggy Cavanaugh purchased this chalet in 1985

Why Peggy Cavanaugh chose Northern Michigan

We fell in love with this area in 1985 and have been vacationing here ever since then. There is so much to see and do in this very beautiful peninsula, walking, biking, wineries, casino, swimming, boating, kayaking to name a few. Spring, summer, fall all the season's offer a beautiful landscape in which to gaze.

What makes this chalet unique

Our cottage is located in a very private wooded setting where you can view the birds and wildlife in their natural setting. Safe area for biking, hiking, swimming. Many wineries, restaurants, microbreweries, and shops. Close to Northport, Sutton's Bay and Leland.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We enjoyed our vacation in so many ways. You were great hosts, the cottage was clean and inviting. There were so many activities to do and things to see. We are looking forward to renting next year.

our stay at the Hummingbird Cottage

  • 3 of 5

We enjoyed our stay at the cottage. The location was good, but we thought we were to be much closer to the water/beach. We feel the inside of the cabin was dark and dated. A little fresh paint and current furniture would be recommended. WIFI was greatly missed. We enjoyed the Northport community and the friendly people. Thank you.

Owner's Response: The beach is a short walk about 1/2 block from the cottage. My cottage has many antiques that have been collected over the years hence the dated furniture. Wifi is available at the clubhouse by the beach area.

Quite, Relaxing Gem!

  • 5 of 5

Pictures and description of the cottage are spot on. We loved the wrap around deck sitting out having coffee and seeing hummingbirds zipping by and deer through the woods. We used the bikes provided as well as the kayaks down at the private beach, both made our trip enjoyable. Steve and Peggy were very responsive, flexible and are all around great hosts. The cottage is dated, as evident by the pictures, but it has an incredible sound system and speakers straight out the 70's ('80's?)!

Charming property with nice ammenities...

  • 3 of 5

Overall the property was nice/clean, however be prepared for musty smells that one would expect in a damp/wooded area. Beautiful wooded lot (bring bug spray), close to the state part with amenities such as kayaks, hiking, beach access... That said, there are notes posted throughout the neighborhood stating that the amenities are not for renters, so I felt uncomfortable using in fear of being scolded by local owners. Especially after speaking with the owner that there had been some conflicts between renters and others that live locally.

Owner's Response: The bylaws of Cherry Home Shores have always stated that an association member must be with the renters while using the amenities. I live directly across the street from the Hummingbird Cottage so I am able to be at the beach with them. The signs went up this year by an overzealous board member and are not well received by the community. We are currently working to get this issue resolved.

As advertised

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed staying at the Hummingbird Cottage. The cottage and community were clean and well maintained. We took advantage of the kayaks, bikes and shuffle board. It was quiet and serene with a wide variety of wild life surrounding the area.

Immaculate Cabin In Excellent Location To Enjoy Northport And All Of Leelanau Peninsula

  • 4 of 5

Spent 3 nights over Fourth Of July holiday. Cabin feels much more secluded in the woods than it really is with only a 2 or 3 minute walk to the association's private beach. A hiking trail starts just a short walk down the road. The people we encountered on our walks and at the beach were extremely friendly.

The cabin is immaculately maintained and is furnished with everything necessary for a short or extended stay. The enclosed wrap-around deck was perfect for our cockapoo family member to be outside without fear of him running after the almost tame deer that came up to the cabin.

We would definitely stay at the Hummingbird Cabin in future trips to the Leelanau Peninsula.

Quiet, wooded location, short walk to the beach, Perfect home base for exploring Leelanau Pennisula

  • 4 of 5

We loved our stay at the cottage. We stayed the first of June and enjoyed seeing baby fawns with their mothers walking in the neighborhood. The beach was very clean with a nice playground and bald eagles flying overhead.

We loved the town of Northport. Tucker's had great food and the cleanest bowling alley I have ever seen.

The cottage had plenty of room for our family of five. We would stay here again.

The Hummingbird Cottage is located in the Cherry Home Shores subdivision, six miles north of Northport and two miles south of the Grand Traverse Lighthouse and State Park. Cherry Home Shores offers four parks, 3 hiking trails, 2 beaches, and playscape. There are many wineries, restaurants, art galleries, and shops in nearby Northport.. A new nine-hole Golf Course opened in Northport in 2014. Tucker's is a new restaurant, bar, bowling alley, and arcade which also opened in 2014. The Mitten microbrewery opened in 2016 in Northport. Small villages such as Leland, Sutton's Bay and Glen Arbor and the Sleeping Bear Dunes dot the peninsula and are close enough for day excursions.
