Photos and Description of this 2 bedroom holiday cottage in Digby - The Gardener's Cottage

2 bedroom cottage sleeps 6 on Digby Neck in Beautiful Nova Scotia

Located on Digby Neck, The Gardener's Cottage lies in the tranquil village of Little River between Digby and Long/Briar Islands. This turn of the century home has been beautifully renovated and includes a large oak dining Kitchen, spacious Living area, contemporary Bathroom, generous Master Bedroom, 2nd bedroom and extensive Deck with stunning views. Imagine relaxing on your deck enjoying pre-dinner drinks and taking in the scenery - Truly Wonderful!!

We're easy to get to; Halifax International Airport is only 168 miles away and the Bay Ferry terminal in Digby is less than a 30 minute drive.

All towels and linens are provided and our Cottage is equipped with everything you need to make your holiday memorable and enjoyable.

Please note that The Cottage has two bedrooms upstairs. The master bedroom with a large queen double and a separate twin. A blow up mattress is available to accommodate an additional 2 if required.

Whale Watching: Digby Neck is arguably the Whale Watching Capital of the World and guests to The Gardener's Cottage are spoilt for choice when it comes to Whale watching operators. The exciting Ocean Exploration Zodiac Whale Cruises, www.oceanexplorations.ca, describe themselves as 'Nova Scotia's most exciting and popular whale/sea bird cruises!' As repeat customers of Ocean Explorations we can vouch for their excellence and the Zodiac ride on it's own is a worthwhile experience. Tom Goodwin the Tour Director is a Marine Biologist and his knowledge and experience further enhance the enjoyment of your Whale watching Trip. There are of course other operators who depart from within a few miles of The Gardener's Cottage and whilst the boat ride may not be as 'fast and furious, the sheer magnificence of these wonderful marine mammals is not diminished.

The Town of Digby: The town of Digby is 20 miles or so from The Gardener's Cottage and is situated on the picturesque shores of The Annapolis Basin. Digby has a population of 2,311 and has a wonderful, quiet, tranquil feel to it. Residents are extremely friendly and welcoming and you'll enjoy visiting the many restaurants, cafes and shops. The Harbour is home to a working fishing fleet and Digby is famous, rightly so, for the delicious scallops harvested from the clean and clear local waters. Visitors to The Gardener's Cottage should make it a priority to try some Digby Scallops in one of the many local restaurants who are expert in preparing Scallop dishes.

In 1997 Canadian Living Magazine asked readers to nominate their home towns as the 'Best In Canada'. After reviewing all nominations the magazine announced Digby as the most romantic place in Canada!

We'll leave you to make up your own mind about that, but one thing's for sure, you'll enjoy a relaxing, energising break at The Gardener's Cottage.

Kejimkujik National Park: Kejimkujik National Park is the only inland park in Canada. Situated in the Maritimes this park is easily accessible to visitors of The Gardener's Cottage. Kejimkujik (or Keji for short!) features abundant lakes and rivers ideal for canoeing. The lush woodlands and rolling landscape are home to a variety of wildlife and visitors may enjoy historic canoe routes including portages as well as many beautiful hiking trails.

Parks Canada say that Kejimkujik provides the best canoeing country in Nova Scotia. You don't have to be an experienced canoe handler to enjoy the quiet lakes and gently flowing rivers as guided canoe outings are given throughout the summer by park interpreters. This is also an ideal place for first time canoers or children to learn how to pilot these vessels.

Cyclists may use their own bikes or rent one and then enjoy the 5 multi purpose trails in the park. For those that prefer the security of their own two feet, Keji offers a trail for everyone.

A well-equipped cottage

  • 4 of 5

Well situated close to whale-watching businesses and ferries to Brier Island, we stayed here for four days. In spite of rather wet weather, we were very comfortable, and Gardener's Cottage is very well equipped for self catering - decent restaurants are a little way away. Diane, who looks after the cottage for the owner, is a great pie maker and did us proud!

Great value and in a great position

  • 5 of 5

The cottage was lovely - very spacious, light and very clean. The kitchen was great, most cottages we rent have very small poorly lit kitchens, this one was a total contrast. It was spacious and had all the appliances including a large American fridge. The cottage is very close to whale watching trips. We went with Brier Island whale and seabird cruises. It was really good but we found it necessary to book, especially at a weekend and in good weather. The overlook is a short walk out the back and is well worth it. We bought fresh haddock from the fish processing plant at the bottom of the bay (green roof). They were very helpful and served us even in their lunch break. Two pounds of haddock cost $10, great value.

Wonderful place

  • 5 of 5

The house is beautiful, extra clean, and I loved the privacy and large yard for my dog to play in. I was greeted by Diane and she welcomed me with a cherry cheese cake which I managed to finish while there! Diane is wonderful and we actually struck up a friendship. Digby Neck is full of wonderful adventures and I especially enjoy hiking around on Brier Island. I will be returning and I highly recommend this vacation home for anybody who loves the outdoors.

We had a wonderful stay at the Gardener's Cottage. Diane was there to greet us and answered any questions that we had. She also stopped by a few times during our stay to see how we were getting along. She gave us many suggestions on what to do and where to eat,

We did day tours to Digby, Annapolis Royal to the historical gardens, St. Mary's Bay and Yarmouth. We also took the ferries to Long Island and Brier Island, fabulous time. We spent the day at Sandy Cove beach which his 5 minutes from the house. The whale watching was the highlight, we used Petite Passage whale watching tours, say so many whales and got amazing pictures.

We ate at many restaurants, the seafood was delicious, the Digby scallops, the clams and the chowder were to die for. Again this was a great base for days trips, so much to see. Diane, thanks so much for your hospitality and the wonderful pies, cherry cheesecake and a coconut pie.

Perfect place on Digby Neck

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at this Digby Neck cottage for the 2nd week of our first Nova Scotia visit. I would reiterate one reviewer's comment that the place was immaculately clean when we arrived. Diane, as legend has it, does provide a fabulously delicious pie (apple in our case) and just couldn't do enough for us over the time we were there, but did not hover. She was a "character" too! Funny, welcoming, and extremely helpful. The owners are very lucky to have her!

The area is very pretty. We were there in May, so it was before things were very green and no whales yet, but we had a nice mix of adventures and relaxation in this very comfortable cottage. A foggy damp day gave us a chance to spend the day at the cottage reading and just hanging out. The cottage overall and the bed in particular were so comfortable. The town of Digby was a good place to eat, and we were also very close to the Ferry to St. John's when we had to leave. We would recommend visiting Annapolis Royale and for a longer drive, it was well worth visiting the picturesque town of Lunenberg on the opposite coast.

No complaints whatsoever. DO go up to the Overlook, it is spectacular, and there are benches and Adirondack chairs to sit and enjoy. Do NOT try to use the "path" to Tommy's Beach. It turns into a slippery, rocky streambed and is not safe. After a fall, we gave up, and at Diane's suggestion, saw a gorgeous sunset from Sandy Beach.

From the 1st day we arrived in Nova Scotia, to the day we left, we had nothing but friendly, welcoming interactions with the people that live there. A very nice visit to the Fish Harbor at the bottom of the hill that you can see from the deck of the cottage and a few of the employees there - fresh Pollack - excellent! Nova Scotia must have the nicest people in the world. It was just that remarkable as far as our experience of the people there from Cape Breton to Briar Island and all in between And Diane is a PEACH! (hmmm....wonder if she makes peach pies too?)

One suggestion: instead of files and drawers full of brochures, it would have been more helpful to have typed information on where to go, what do to, as part of the binder that was left about the cottage. But if visitors need any information, call Diane - she knows everything local!

We had a lovely experience, start to finish.
