About the property

All comfort, fully equipped, sleeps 6. Very suitable for low season use.

Les Girolles is a stone house with several terraces that is part of the domaine Lagrenie, close to Groléjac. It is quietly situated at the end of a wood road, but just 15 minutes from the Medieval city of Sarlat and the famous villages Domme and La Roque-Cageac, and only 25 minutes from the castles of Castelnaud and Beynac. Located on a hillside it provides fantastic views over the river the Dordogne and the Perigordian hills.

Lagrenie consists of an old farmhouse, where the Dutch owners live, and two rental houses: Les Cèpes (sleeps 8) and Les Girolles (sleeps 6). The renters share a large swimming pool (6 x 12 meters), table tennis table and trampoline, and have complete privacy with several terraces of their own.

About Karin ten Kate

We, Karin and Gijs are a Dutch couple in our fifties. We moved to France two years ago to fulfill our dream. Since then we are almost fully booked from April through September and we are very proud of the reviews we have received. Karin takes care of the houses and gardens, Gijs is a writer and board room consultant and facilitates business retreats.

Karin ten Kate purchased this house in 2010

Why Karin ten Kate chose Groléjac

We have dreamt all our lives of offering a quiet, inspiring place to people to relax, be happy and rebalanced from the pressures of society. We found Lagrenie in 2010 and we have turned it into something unique: the authenticity of a medieval domaine with all modern comfort you could wish. Lagrenie is surrounded by woods an has views over the river, but is very close to all famous castles, markets and villages of the Dordogne.

What makes this house unique

Original stone houses.

Quite location nearby any possible attraction.

Authentic, romantic place with large swimming pool (6X12), trampoline, table tennis, stunning views, ruins.

Beautiful, well-located and comfortable

  • 5 of 5

We loved staying at Les Girolles. We spent a giddy arrival checking out all the corners of this beautiful home- the ancient stone walls, the gardens, the chickens, the magnificent views from the kitchen and living room windows, and of course, the pool! Practicalities: we found the property to be really well-located in terms of sightseeing; the beds are comfortable; the kitchen is well-stocked in terms of dishes and pots/pans; the pool is clean and there are plenty of pool toys/floaties; a washer & dryer are available; there is a large outdoor table for eating and a BBQ; cable TV offers international news and a few English channels as well as French, Dutch, German, etc. Unfortunately, our stay coincided with a major heat wave (unusual for early June)- and the upstairs was uncomfortable without fans, however, the bedrooms downstairs stayed cool. Karin was a lovely host and her dogs were very friendly and well trained. It's really an enchanting experience to stay in such a historical property (the foundations are 13th century!), and yet have all the amenities, as well as great hosts. Highly recommended.

What a wonderful place!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for a week at Les Girolles with our 3 kids and we could not have been happier. So many things to see and do in the area and yet also the perfect place to just sit back and relax.

The view over the Dordogne river valley was spectacular. Every morning I would look out the kitchen window and take a couple more pictures in case I hadn't quite captured it yet. The house was clean and well equipped. We loved the mix of 400 year old stone building with the cozy and comfortable interior.

Karin and Gijs were great hosts. They gave us a full tour of the property and filled us in on some of the fascinating history. Our kids would wander over every day to visit with Karin's dogs Maya and Bimba and then carry on to check up on how the chickens were doing. We really appreciated that Karin and Gijs seemed to enjoy having the kids come around to visit. They made us all feel very welcome.

There so many things to see and do in the area around Grolejac that you could easily pack your days with caves, markets, castles, medieval towns, all surrounded by beautiful scenery. And yet...then you'd miss out on soaking up the peacefulness at Lagrenie, relaxing by the pool, bouncing on the trampoline or simply sitting quietly in the secret place with a glass of wine. We mixed it up nicely and took advantage of both. It was a wonderful part of our vacation in France. We hope to be back one day.

What a find!

  • 5 of 5

The photos of this extraordinary site can't do justice to its peace and beauty. Contemporary in the way you want it to be, such as kitchen, plumbing, heating, pool while being lovingly restored in such a way as to maintain the fascinating history of these buildings and their spiritual essence. The warm atmosphere is also key to what made this the ideal location for us. The hosts have that rare gift of giving absolute privacy while always being available when needed. Here, one has the dual advantage of being set far away from hustle and bustle yet also being central to the key sights and activities of the Dordogne. Whether you want to sit by the pool and chill or be active and explore, everything is at hand. We will be back and are already recommending to friends (so book up well in advance!).

Comfortable, clean with great views

  • 5 of 5

We were very comfortable during our week-long stay. The location was perfect for exploring the "beaux villages" nearby.

It was quiet with an incredible view. Couldn't ask for more!

Comfortable stay in a magical place

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our 2 week stay at La Grenie and found the accommodation very clean and comfortable. Karin was a wonderful host making sure we had everything we might need during our stay. We were welcomed with a bottle of wine and fresh eggs in the refrigerator. The grounds, gardens and pool are beautiful and the view over the Dordogne river valley was stunning. We found the location great for day trips out exploring the area and the many sites within 30 minutes drive. The proximity to Sarlat, Domme and having all amenities within 10-15 minutes was great. We were a party of 3 ages 70, 42 and 5 and La Grenie offered comfort and enjoyment for each of us.

Perfect Country Family Get Away

  • 5 of 5

This was an absolutely beautiful accommodation and perfect for our family. Because of its location in the hills of Grolejac, we had incredible views of the area. The gite itself was very private (despite there being a 2nd gite attached) and gave a nice balance of old world charm (exterior) with modern and cosy interior renovation. There was so much to do for the kids - the pool, table tennis, trampoline - and Karin even came by to bring by some Lego for our youngest and show us some colourful markers in the apartment for our kids. The location was terrific with a short drive to many great areas in the region and you can even walk into Grolejac (20-30 minutes each way depending on your kids' stamina). Karin was a perfect host and answered any questions we had quickly throughout our stay. We were sad to leave.

These stone houses and their several terraces are part of the Lagrenie domaine found in the hills overlooking Groléjac village, the Dordogne river and Perigordian hills. Situated at the end of a forest road, it is tranquility itself. However, the Medieval city of Sarlat and the famous villages Domme and La Roque-Gageac are 15 minutes away, Beynac Castle and Castelnaud: 25 minutes.

The Dutch owners live in Lagrenie's old farmhouse, with Les Cèpes (sleeps 6-8) and Les Girolles (sleeps 6) clustered around the views and the large shared (6 x 12 meters) pool. There is also a table tennis table and trampoline. Beautifully tended gardens provide ample space for children to exhaust themselves, while adults can relax in the complete privacy of the terraces.
