An Eden in the wilds of Abruzzo
For many years we have been renting holiday homes in Southern Europe and without a doubt Casa del Fiume has been the best yet. The property is self-contained and consists of half of a large country house situated in several acres of partly-cultivated and partly-wild grounds that slope down to the fast-flowing Aventino. The rooms are spacious and airy; the thick walls ensure coolness even in the hottest weather and the decor and fittings are well-chosen and in good condition. We particularly appreciated the artworks on the walls.
The hosts, Stew and Ruth, who live next door, have a deep knowledge of and feeling for this little-visited region of Italy and by following their suggested itineraries we saw and understood more than we could have hoped to with just a guidebook. That said, we only scratched the surface of what the area has to offer in terms of wilderness, wildlife and outdoor activities.
Thanks again Stew and Ruth for your kind gifts (wine and homemade bread on arrival and delicious fresh eggs daily) and excellent advice. We look forward to staying with you again one day in your unspoilt corner of Italy.
We Can't Wait to Return!
Stewart and Ruth have an exceptionally lovely home which is enhanced by their gracious hospitality and helpfulness. Our stay in Abruzzo was an unforgettable experience. We felt right at home and thoroughly enjoyed the beautiful surroundings as well as the delicious fresh produce from Ruth's garden. This was our first time in this part of Italy, and we were delighted by the wonderful small towns and friendly residents. One of our favorite meals during our trip was at the restaurant suggested by Stew, and we're so glad we got the opportunity to meet Sarah, sample her wonderful wines and enjoy the spectacular view! We will surely return and definitely stay with our new friends, Stew and Ruth!
Casa del fiume, realy is a river cottage, with a river, mountains, lake not far away, stunning scenary, Stew and ruth wonderful hosts, making us welcome, nothing too much trouble. The cottage was clean, had everything that was needed when we were out Stew even lit the log fire so we returned to a welcoming warm cosy home, we felt part of the family. We were there for only a few wonderful days, we want to return but next time stay alot longer. I would realy recommend this property Stewart and Ruth. Arrivederci. Mario and Susan
This place is really charming. It's half of an old house, very nicely - and recently - converted and stylishly furnished. It has some pleasant outside space, and, because of the thickness of the walls and the orientation, a kind of naturally air-conditioned effect: if you leave the shutters closed during the day, it remains beautifully cool. Stewart and Ruth are extremely welcoming hosts, who care a lot about their guests' experience at the house, and are very enthusiastic and informed about the area. Abruzzo feels very undiscovered compared with Umbria or even the Marche, and there are some fabulous things within the immediate area of the house. There's a great walk up a truly spectacular gorge at Fara S. Martino (if you don't mind climbing over landslip debris to get to it), and a wonderful Roman site on a hilltop nearby (Iuvanum). More prosaically, there's a very good wireless connection at the house for those who find it hard to leave their work behind.
A beautiful holiday
The description of Casa del Fiume is very accurate minus the smells, sounds, heat and sense of peace. The property is the nicest we have ever stayed in and benefits from the owner's artistic style and attention to detail. Ruth and Stewart went above and beyond to provide the best possible customer service and that greatly enhanced our stay. We would highly recommend a holiday here. It is the kind of place you will want to return to whenever possible.
The location is ideal for exploring the many small mediaeval towns of this region, walking in the Majella mountains, basking on empty beaches of the 'Trabocchi Coast' and swimming in the warm Adriatic sea (40 min drive), downhill skiing / snowboarding on the empty slopes at the ski resort of Roccaraso (40 min drive), cross-country skiing on 30 Km of runs through beech woods at Bosco di Sant’Antonio (30 min drive), or merely relax with a book on a lounger with your feet dangling in the cooling water of the Aventino river (2 min walk).
This area is part of what is known as 'the green lung of Europe' - being next to the Majella National Park. Abruzzo has always been a favourite holiday destination for discerning Italians, due to its diversity - dramatic scenery, mountains, sea, blue-flag beaches, gastronomy, art, history and culture - literally something for everyone. But more importantly, Italians say it’s like the Real Italy of 50 or more years ago - unspoilt and unpretentious.
Other Activities: Majella brewery tour; Guided walks in the Majella mountains; Slow food tastings
