Guestbook comments from the owner

Dearest Hale Mahana,

What pure joy to have stayed with you. To bring us such loving peace, restful nights, and glorious sounds and sights. The sounds of the trade winds and melodies of the song birds will carry us gracefully into the days to come.

We love you!

Stellar Home

  • 5 of 5

I've stayed in bunches of rental places through the years and this one is remarkable. It is a well and intelligently appointed vacation home in a gorgeous strategically located position. Since it is a vacation home it isn't set-up like a rental to be easy to manage and bare bones. It has everything. Having a washer AND DRYER was critical for our seven day trip. The fast internet allowed us to stream a movie every night and the outdoor shower was refreshing and kept the home from being "dripping" inside. Adrienne was available for any questions and runs a tight ship. We also found the lanai to be an ideal place for a proposal. She said Yes!

Quiet, cozy, fully equipped retreat cottage surrounded by orchards, local farms, and private estates

  • 5 of 5

We came here to cook local foods, listen to rain, lazily wander, and do some astral photography. Aside from the generous orchardist behind the house who grows rambutan, apple bananas, custard apples, and sapote, there’s another farm across the highway within walking distance that sells local honey, coconuts, and other items in season. Another mile and a half down the highway is Kunana Farm, where they make Kauai’s best known local goat cheese (you’ll find it on many island menus) and offer farm tours. Kilauea Bakery in town offers lilikoi cream puffs and dark chocolate macnut fudge alongside hearty pizzas and breads. If you want an island breakfast, trek into Kapaa to Ono Family Restaurant and have a giant loco moco with a side of toast and their house made papaya mango jam. Head into Hanalei to Wishing Well Shave Ice and get a Sunset topped with lilikoi. The Kilauea Lighthouse is a birdwatchers paradise. And support the Native Hawaiian Homestead in Anahola by enjoying one of the best poke bowls on the island — get the Kalalea Bowl topped with shrimp tempura — or buy locally made crafts. Get your four handed traditional Lomi Lomi massage at Angeline’s in Anahola too, but leave your modesty at the door. All bodies are beautiful and celebrated there, men and women.

All this is to say that this cottage is particularly well positioned to enjoy some of the more quiet, most tasty, and less touristy aspects of the island. If you want an all inclusive resort experience, head to the St, Regis. If you want to wake up, brew some Kauai coffee (with local sugar), cut up a sunset colored papaya or a candy cream pineapple that you picked up at the farmers market, and sit listening to the roosters start your day without a single car or truck sound anywhere, then this is your spot.

On astral photography — when the rain cooperates, it’s a stunning experience. We didn’t get a cloudless night until our last evening here, and it was amazing — the Pleiades, the Milky Way, Mars, Saturn, and well over 10 Messiers all visible with the naked eye. Long exposure photos reveal even more. I set up a simple tripod with a 30 second exposure and was blown away. The expansive lawn out front is uncluttered and provides a nearly perfect 360 degree view, minus a few large stands of bamboo and palms at the neighbors.

In summation, explorers guided by their senses will leave satisfied, well rested, and awed. This is our Kauai homebase forever.

Romantic getaway

  • 5 of 5

The location of Hale Mahana is extremely peaceful, which is exactly what we were hoping for. We enjoyed relaxing on the lanai with our morning coffee and evening wine, watching the daily rainshowers.

The home is beautifully appointed - Hawaiian quilts and artwork are quite pleasing. Adrienne thought of every possible amenity to make our stay very comfortable, down to the frosted beer glasses in the freezer! Hale Mahana was the perfect place for the two of us to celebrate our 25th anniversary!

Comfortable, clean, beautiful, quiet, convenient

  • 4 of 5

This house was wonderful. You could not want for anything, the host has every possible need covered. It was a quiet and relatively secluded location, the host is very quick to respond to any concern. The location is close to everything you want to do on the North or East Shore. Quiet residential neighborhood, plenty of space from neighboors. The only issue was roosters crowing in the morning, but you are going to get this anywhere on the island unless you stay in a crowded resort. This really felt like home away from home. We cooked all our food, relaxed and had a great time. Enjoy this home.

Perfect spot to stay on Kauai's North Shore! Couldn't have asked for more.

  • 5 of 5

The property is located in a beautiful residential area of Kilauea, about equidistant from Hanalei and Kapaa. The location makes it easy to view the sunrise at Kealia Beach on the east side and the sunset at Hanalei - all in the same day. It's spotlessly clean and well-equipped with everything you need for a perfect Kauai getaway, from comfortable beds to kitchen equipment to beach chairs and boogie boards. The grounds are lovely, filled with a variety of palm, bamboo, banana, and mango trees. The neighborhood is quiet except for the singing of the birds (even the famous Kauai roosters seem to crow from a respectful distance!) and the rustling of the trade winds through the trees. Hope to return again soon! Thanks Adrienne for providing the perfect setting for a wonderful and much-needed vacation.

Perfect Getaway!!! Peace, quiet, relaxation.

  • 5 of 5

If you want privacy, quiet, peace, and solitude, this is the place to be. Unlike more dense areas of the north shore, the house sits by itself, in a very small and quiet neighborhood, with your nearest neighbors far away. We only saw one other person one or two times the whole time staying at the house. The house itself is very pleasant and well stocked. The beds were extremely comfortable and the lanai or porch was such a wonderful place to have morning coffee. The location is great in that you are so close to all of the north shore sights and beaches but you always come back to peace and quiet at the house. There was always a nice cool evening breeze and the house is equipped with 4 very large ceiling fans. I was concerned about a lack of AC when we booked the house, for sleeping at night, but it was not needed at all. The wifi is fast, which I was not expecting, being in a more remote area of Kauai. I would not hesitate in coming back, we loved our stay! Our host was also amazing, always answering all of our questions and providing great tips. Thanks for letting us know about the pool passes at the Marriott! We had a blast there on our last day, waiting for our flight.
