About Carmen Bigas (phone) and Greta Palme (email)

My husband and I live half of the year in America and the other half of the year travelling around the world. We are retired and enjoy our four children and six grandchildren when we are home in America.

Carmen Bigas (phone) and Greta Palme (email) purchased this chateau / country house in 2006

Why Carmen Bigas (phone) and Greta Palme (email) chose Foixá

We bought this property because we just were enchanted by it. At the time the previous owner had to move back to Germany. This house was rebuilt by a German couple that spent 2 years rebuilding it and spared nothing into the reconstruction.

What makes this chateau / country house unique

The property is amazing, the location Foixa is a small village with around only 30 homes, most of them wealthy old farmhouses now rebuilt by wealthy people with a few local farmers for enjoying life.

Stunning house. Perfect for a large family holiday

  • 5 of 5

The property is absolutely stunning. The photos really don't do it justice. The gardens are beautiful. There is ample space in the house and the two separate villas so that you're not all tripping over each other. The outdoor kitchen area is brilliant and we ate out there every night. The only downside is the only restaurant in walkable distance has now closed down so if you want to eat out, you have to drive. There are plenty of supermarkets close by though and the house is so beautiful you'll be reluctant to leave anyway. We're hoping to come back again next year.

Carmen was very helpful and full cash deposit was returned on our day of departure.

We had two babies with us and the only downside I would say is that there were no high chairs and only one travel cot could be provided.

The pool is lovely but doesn't have a shallow end so kids need to be confident swimmers or bring arm bands etc.

The area around the house is lovely and green and there are some beautiful villages close by, if you can drag yourselves away from the pool and gardens.

Phenomenal House for a Family Vacation or Group

  • 5 of 5

We arrived for a family vacation with 12 people although originally planned for 11. The owners and Carmen who is on site could not have been more gracious and helpful in providing us information about location and other details, as well as sites, restaurants and activities in the region. The house is located in a beautiful village, FOIXA, with a great casual restaurant, and small market with fresh vegetables from the farm next door, and fantastic bread, baked to order the day before.

The property is large, very private, with a great pool area and yard. Being an old house from the 1700s I believe, the walls were very thick and kept things cool, but in addition the bedrooms were well air conditioned.

We had a multigenerational faimliy gathering, and never once ate indoors, always using the great outdoor or summer kitchen eating area directly adjacent to the well equiped kitchen. all of the promotional and photographic information provided was true to reality on arrival.

Recommned without reservation.

The region is great as well. We have done similar trips in Tuscany and Provence, and the Girona region has much similar to over with the beach areas being less crowded and some beautiful and quaint small towns to visit. There are also many wineries in the regions, and of the course the number one restaurant in the world in Girona itself.

Thanks to Carmen, Greta and Rene for an fantastic house and service.

Great house and location --> Great vacation!

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful family vacation in this house. We were a family of eleven people, lodging in the main house and one of the villas.

The house is very-very spacious, clean and equipped. On our arrival flowers and a greeting pack was awaiting for us (which was great, since arriving in Sunday afternoon is bit problematic if you need food supply after a journey).

The kitchen is well supplied (enough dishes, pans, etc), which is important since we enjoy preparing and eating dinners together.

There are also enough towels, and other needed supplies (not obvious in other self catering holidays).

Both Garden and pool are very well kept and maintained.

The surrounding is quiet, but close to the beaches (20-25 min), and beautiful medieval villages such as Pals and Pertallada. Girona is also close by if you are looking for a big town experience.

Few supermarkets are withing 10 minutes driving distance (basic products can be found also in the village).

We had many hiking tours (Camino de Ronda is a must), and even though it was a bit chilly we did used the pool.

Thanks for great vacation!

Great experience

  • 5 of 5

My brother sister and I with our families got together in this house which absorbed us all and gave us a really happy holiday. A quality accomodation ideal for getting family groups together. The outside eating area works really well and the meal prepared for us on the night we all arrived was fabulous.

We spent a wonderful week in this beautiful Masia. The house is impeccably kept, the rooms are very spacious and the bathrooms are great. The house is beautiful and has various relaxing spots in which you can enjoy your family, read a book, have a meal or lounge around. The pool is great and the garden is just stunning. The house is very comfortable and very well furnished, all amenities are up to date and everything works very well. This house is ideal for large family or friends gatherings and also amazing for getting to know that beautiful part of Spain. This Masia has a great location since it is near many beaches, restaurants, medieval towns, golf courses, shopping, sightseeing etc. Carmen, who helps manage the property, was great at making our stay very pleasant. She helped us with reservations and was also very helpful in giving us directions and in organizing our days and visits. We will definitely stay there again soon!

Wonderful mansion for great family holidays

  • 5 of 5

We reserved the mansion for our yearly family holidays (we live in different countries so we try to get together once a year). Having visited Italy and France during the last years, we found this "gem" in Foixa (close to Girona) thanks to some friends.

Upon our arrival, we were received by Carmen Bigas who helps the guests on their arrival and was very helpful to get us feel at home during the 2 weeks. She lives a few miles away but can help you with all the things you need for the holidays.

During the next 2 weeks, our family (12 persons) visited the surroundings (Girona, Barcelona, Pals, Cadaquez, Estartit etc) or simply "chilled" at the mansion. The kids enjoyed the swimming pool or played badmington in the garden (around 10 000 m2...) or just enjoyed the company of the cousins and uncles.

The mansion is extremly well maintained, lots of wonderful antiques and the rooms are very spacious. The house is just a gem, lots of little details. The mansion has been constructed a century ago, but has been remodeled various times. It still fits very well into the scenery but on the other hand has all the "modern" stuff. There are all amenities (2 kitchens, washing machines etc etc.) you need for your holidays. Most of the time, the family gathered in the wonderful patio, just outside of the main kitchen.....close to the wine cellar and the refrigerator. This is important because you will stay most of the time at this wonderful place...

The small village of Foixa has a good restaurant and a small grocery store. After the first morning, the lady at the store told us that she would gladly reserve us our "daily" bread. We found also out that she had most of the vegetables we needed, excellent cured ham etc. so we bought our "special" grocery with her and for the rest, we visited the supermarkets close to the village

The beaches of Estartit and Escala are 15-20 minutes away and are worth a visit.

Final "vote": This is really a mansion "fit for the king of Spain"

There is a restaurant in Foixá, Can quel. Another restaurant that is only 10 km away (13 minutes), is Restaurant San Martí, located in San Martí Vell.

You can also enjoy the local market at La Bisbal every Friday morning. La Bisbal is also the capital of pottery (at 11.4 km, 18 minutes).

There are two Golf Courses only 16 and 19 minutes away, Pitch and Putt Golf Club and the Empordá Golf Club. The PGA Golf de Catalunya, which is the number 1 Golf course in Spain 2012, is only 35 minutes away.

If you like food, then you are definitely in for a treat in Costa Brava. The cuisine of the Costa Brava is a fine reflection of its territory; fish and seafood are very typical, meat, cheese, wild fruits and mushrooms.

There are many great Michelin starred restaurants around, including world´s 2nd best restaurant El Celler de Can Roca which truly offers a great culinary experience!! (at 22 km, 30 minutes)

Girona´s Old Town was founded by the Romans and offers an interesting visit to Romanesque and Gothic monuments, medieval walls, one of Europe´s best kept Jewish neighborhoods, the Cathedral of St Mary of Girona which has the widest nave in the world with 22 meter (72 ft), its construction was started on the 11th century and wasn’t finished until the 18th century (at 27.4 km, 35 minutes).

Begur is not only a beautiful medieval town it also has beautiful beaches. Aiguablava is a stunning cala in Begur (at 26.7 km, 38 minutes).

Peratallada, a very interesting medieval town, has a layout of narrow, winding cobblestoned alleys and a very interesting castle (at 15 km, 21 minutes).

Another medieval town is Pals, which is set on a hill and is also an interesting visit (at 20 km, 27 minutes).

Palau Sator, a medieval town of Roman origin. The town has preserved its medieval ambiance in its alleys and walls as well as its tower (at 14.5 km, 21 minutes).

Monells is also a medieval town. The town was built around its castle, from which only the walls remain. Every alley and corner in Monells wiIl make you think of medieval times, of knights, nobles, markets, castles, and kings; it is a beautiful visit (at 9.5 km, 12 minutes).

Palmós is the most important fishing port in the area (at 32.2 km, 45 minutes).

Calella, one of the bays around the coast of Palafrugell, was once a small fishing village. Another two beaches in Palafrugell are Llafranc and Tamariu (at 29 km, 42 minutes).

In Saint Feliu de Guíxols you can visit the Benedictine Monastery of the 10th century, which is now a museum; there is also great shopping in St Feliu de Guíxols as well as a beach. In S’Agaro visit beach Playa de St Pol, a tranquil beach in which you can relax, kayak, waterski. There is a nice walkway with restaurants, I recommend the Restaurant El Raco de St Pol (at 40 km, 50 minutes).

Platja D’Aro has a long main avenue and many chic shops, restaurants and bars, as well as a beach (at 34.7 km, 45 minutes).

Dalí’s Castle and Home with Gala is in Púbol, only 5 minutes from Foixá (at 3.2 km, 5 minutes).

Just 40 minutes away is Figueres and the Dalí Theatre-Museum. It was first built as a theater in the 19th century then restored in 1966. Next to the museum is a tower in which Dalí lived his last years (at 34.6, 40 minutes).

La Roca Village Outlet at La Roca del Vallés is also a great shopping place to spend a day!! (at 90 km, 1 hr).

In Barcelona you can spend a day or two sightseeing and shopping, places to visit: the Olympic Village, Montjuic fountains, Gothic Quarter, Gaudí’s architecture, Palau de Música Catalana, Cathedral, Sagrada Familia, Rambla, Pedrera building, Picasso Museum (at 120 km, 1 hr 25 minutes).

Cadaqués is a town which is in a bay in the middle of the Cap de Creus Peninsula. It is a stunning fishing village which surely deserves a visit (at 55 km, 1 hr 9 minutes).

El Port de la Selva is another important fishing village, there you can visit Sant Pere de Rodes which is a former Benedictine monastery from the 12th century (at 60 km, 1 hr).

In La Escala you can visit the Ruins de Empúries, which was a Greek and Roman town in the coast of the Mediterranean. In 575 BC it was founded by the Greek and later occupied by the Romans. The ruins are a marvel. You can visit the town of La Escala, an important fishing port and tourist center (at 21 km, 23 minutes).

Peralada is a village in the province of Girona, founded in 500 A.C. There you can visit the Castle of Peralada restored in the 19th century in French style (at 20 km, 24 minutes).

There are also 41 vineyards in the Empordá which you can also visit.

Carcassone, France, a fortified French town founded by the Visigoths in the 5th century. This town is a great experience, you can sleep inside of the town if you want to spend the night there (at 216 km, 2 hrs 12 minutes).
