Sleeps 4, in the beautiful village of Val-d'Illiez, 5 minutes by car to lifts

A spacious 2 bedroom apartment with magnificent views over the Dents du Midi mountain range, perfect for a family of 4. Just 5 minutes car journey to the lifts of Champery or Les Crosets in the Portes du Soleil ski area, giving you more flexibility during busy periods. The apartment was fully refurbished in 2010 to include a high-spec kitchen, and modern bathroom, and has been tastefully decorated in a modern-mountain style. The apartment comprises of a large living and dining area with comfortable leather sofas and large plasma TV, and a wooden dining table which will seat 6. Doors from the lounge lead onto the balcony with beautiful views over the Dents du Midi. The master bedroom has a queen bed, and the second bedroom has a bunk bed suitable for both adults and children alike. The kitchen has all modern appliances including an oven, microwave, fridge, freezer and dishwasher. The refurbished bathroom has both a shower cubicle with rain-shower, plus a separate bath. There is a communal wash-room, an outdoor parking space and a secure ski-room/bike room

The apartment is a short 5 minutes drive from the parking at the Champery cable car, 7 minutes from the Grand Paradis chair-lift and 10 mins drive from Les Crosets, where you are straight onto the slopes/lifts. This gives you a range of options to get quickly onto the slopes, especially during the busy high-season weekends when the cable car at Champery can involve long queues. It also means that you won't have to carry your family's skis for half a mile to get to the lifts compared to most apartments in Champery or Les Crosets.

Getting to Val-d'Illiez: Val-d'Illiez has excellent road, rail and air connections to all of Europe. Geneva airport, with it's extensive year-round international flights, is only an 1 hour drive door-to-door or 2hrs by train, and Sion airport is only 35 min by car, with Chambery, Basle, Lyon, Grenoble and Zurich airports a short drive away. It is also only 15 min drive by main road to the nearest motorway (A9) which has excellent connections to France, Germany and Italy.

If coming by car, exit the A9/E27 (Geneva-Lausanne-Montreux-Sion) motorway at exit 18 (signposted St.Triphon/Monthey Nord) and follow the brown signs for Champery/Portes du Soleil/Val-d'Illiez.. After 15 mins you will come to the village of Val-d'Illiez, take 1st right (you have to go right round roundabout to access) passing through village square and go up hill between bakery and estate agents. After 200 metres you will come to plateau and apartment is on right, the left of the 2 buildings.

Winter Activities in Val-d'Illiez: As well as the unbeatable skiing opportunities available in the Portes du Soleil right on the doorstep, there are also plenty of other outdoor activities for the energetic and not-so energetic. There are world class cross-country skiing courses in Champery, as well as ice-skating and curling rinks (lessons available), and plenty of walking and snow shoe routes of all levels for the non-skier. Husky-pulled sleigh-rides can be organised through the tourist office, as well as torchlight night-time nature walks, and Paragliding lessons.

Summer Activities in Val-d'Illiez: The summer months are just as varied in activities as the winter months. Some fantastic alpine walking routes pass by the village, and the whole of the Portes du Soleil area is turned into a walkers and cross-country bikers paradise,. Many of the ski lifts are kept operational making it easy for even the casual walker or biker to experience the incredible scenery from the top of the local mountains, and at 1 euro a day for unlimited lift access it's also a bargain. The mountain biker is especially catered for with purpose-built courses from beginner to World Championship level.

Other popular sports nearby are Paragliding (there's a school in the village), a Via Ferrata, Mountain Climbing, Horse Riding and Archery. There is also a large outdoor swimming pool in Champery and public Tennis courts nearby. Plus the Thermal Spa 5 min drive away will help you relax those aching muscles. And not forgetting the towns on Lake Geneva 20 min away, such as Montreux, Vevey and Lausanne.

Beautiful views!

A great modern apartment on the top floor of a small apartment building, with outstanding views over the mountains from the lounge and balcony. The views alone were worth renting the apartment.

The lifts in Champery are only a 5 minute drive away, and the surprisingly good Spa/Thermes are a short drive or a "brisk" 10 minutes walk away. Great for relaxing after a hard day's skiing.

The kids were kept happy by the TV and Playstation in their room, and us adults were kept happy by the fact the kids were locked away in their room!

The advert is accurate in it's description of the facilities and the photos on the site don't do the views justice! I wou'dn't hesitate to recommend the apartment to any of our friends.

We've stayed in this apartment with our two children during a couple of weeks this summer and it was simply a joy to be there. It's much more spacious than the photos suggest and really has everything you can wish for. The balcony has a wonderful view and the children could also play on the lawn in front of the house.

The renting agency that represented the owner was wonderful too and really easy to communicate with.

The only quibble we had was that using the washing machine in the basement of the complex was very complicated and required an enormous amount of small coins (0,50 CHF) which meant we had to go to the bank first to get enough coins in order to be able to do some washing!

The village of Val-D'Illiez isn't exactly buzzing with activity during the summer months. Unfortunately the bakery in the town village was on holiday for most of our stay, but the small PAM-supermarket sold bread as well. The Coop in nearby Champery was open 7/7, which is really extraordinary in Switzerland! Monthey in the valley (only a 10 minutes drive) has huge supermarkets and if you're looking to avoid expensive Swiss prices, there is a quite well-stocked Intermarché near Chatel in France at only a 20 minute drive (also open on Sunday morning). Beware of the customs though, because they do check some of the passing cars. So buying too much booze, meat or cigarettes might get you in trouble ;-)

We went walking, swimming, tree-climbing (Point Sud accrobranche in Champoussin). Admittedly we were very lucky with the weather this year. The possibility to buy a so-called Multipass in summer means that you can use the mountain-lifts in the whole Porte du Soleil area and have free access to all the swimming pools etc. That really made our stay even more worthwhile. The atmosphere was very relaxed and although the infrastructure is great, there isn't exactly any mass-tourism here.

We can only recommend this apartment as well as the surroundings!

The Perfect base to explore the Portes du Soleil

The pictures of the view don't do it justice! From sunshine to grey skies the view was beautiful and sitting on the balcony with a "vin chaud" became one of the routines that my wife and I adopted when we got back from skiing. And it was nice of the owners to leave some warm blankets to sit out under!

The apartment itself is a mix of modern and rustic, and surprisingly luxurious, and is quite large compared to other ski apartments we've stayed in. It looks recently redecorated to a high standard and there's plenty of room on the large leather sofas and around the wooden dining table for a family/group of 4. Plus there are flat-screen TVs in all rooms so the kids were able to watch DVDs while we relaxed in the living room.

Our bedroom was large and snug, and it was a struggle getting out of bed in the morning. Likewise for the kids in the bunk beds in their room. I loved the full-sized bath in the modern bathroom - so relaxing after a long day on the slopes.

The village of Val-d'Illiez is a cute little alpine village - with picturesque church, small square plus a couple of shops, bars and restaurants. The hill down from the apartment to the village was steep so was an energetic walk back up, and some may find the car easier. There was a bakery for buying the morning croissants, and a smal supermarket for the basics, and we found a couple of large supermarkets down in Monthey a 15 min drive away.

Although the village is not directly next to the charlifts or slopes, we found this wasn't a problem, and actually gave us more options - the lift at Champery is only 5 min drive away, but driving to Les Crosets was only 5 minutes extra, and it meant avoiding the early morning scrum at the big ski lift in Champery and getting straight on the slopes. No hauling the skis across town! Plus one of the days we went to Champoussin which is also 10 mins away, and because of the snow quality this wasn't possible from the Champery lift. And we saw that the ski-bus to Les Crosets stops at the end of the road 100m away if you don't fancy driving.

I would highly recommend this apartment to small familys or couples, and we will hopefully be back in 2012 for our next ski holidays!

Val-d'Illiez is a typical Swiss Alpine village in the French-speaking part of Switzerland. It is 5 mins by car to both the ski lifts at Champery and Les Crosets, which gives you access to the Portes du Soleil, one of the biggest ski areas in the world. You can also access the ski area by catching the train to Champery from the village station (train takes 10 min) or the ski-bus which stops at the end of the road (150 metres away) to Les Crosets. The village itself has many facilities including 2 restaurants and a bar, a small supermarket, bakery, post office, bank, taxi service, train station, and a church. It also has a famous thermal spa resort 5 min drive away ('Les Bains du Val-d'Illiez'). The nearest big town is Monthey, which is 15 min by car or 30 min by train, and has various large supermarkets and department stores, plus direct access to the A9/E62 motorway.

Ski: With the Portes du Soleil ski area on your doorstep you have access to one of the largest and most varied ski areas in the world, which includes 12 linked ski towns in Switzerland and France, 250 ski lifts and 650 km of pistes. For the beginner there are long winding blues to hone your skills, for the intermediate some of the best challenging reds in the Alps, and for the advanced skier reliable snow creates great off-piste opportunities. And not forgetting the world-famous 'Mur de Chavanette' (or the Swiss Wall) to challenge the most confident of skiers. And there are plenty of on-piste restaurants to help you relax after a hard mornings ski.

If you fancy a change of scene the ski resorts of Villars/Les Diablerets are 30 min drive across the valley (or an hour by train), and Verbier and Crans Montana are only 45 min away, with the jet-set playground of Gstaad approximately an hour door-to-piste.

There is a Nespresso coffee machine and a normal coffee percolator. There is also a fondue set, plus raclette grill. A PlayStation 2 and various games are also provided, as well as a large DVD collection of films and TV shows. There are ample electrical outlets running at 220v, with both Swiss-style and French/Euro style sockets. There are also adapters for UK and US plugs. Note: The apartment is on the 3rd floor of the building and there is no elevator access. Therefore we do not recommend the apartment for people who require disabled access.
