Former home of famous German novelist and Hollywood screen writer, Carl Zuckmayer, an 8 room luxury apartment, available with or without catering and full concierge service. Full of historic character over 2 floors the chalet was extensively restored in 2006 retaining the original larch timbers to create a stunning yet homely holiday residence. Situated in a sunny position with fabulous views over the surrounding mountains from all rooms and terrace. Sleeping a maximum of 10 as 5 bedrooms; 3 double & 2 with bunk beds, ideal for 2 families sharing. Featuring a large open plan lounge with deep upholstered sofas & dining area with oak table comfortably seating 10. A separate designer kitchen with double oven, dishwasher, microwave, coffee machine & kitchen table. 3 separate bathrooms, Sauna & steam room. High tech accessories; Samsung 40'' 3DTV, Blu-ray player, PS3+games/DVDs, iPod connection to Hifi, wireless broadband, External balcony, terrace, gardens. only 10-15 mins walk to Alpine Express lift, bakery is 3 mins walk.   • All of the bedrooms have lovely views and all located away from the main living areas. Double bedroom 3 with the sofa bed is located downstairs (perfect for the Nanny) and often doubles as the children's TV room with PS3 console & 3D TV with 3D glasses enabling adults to relax upstairs.

Notes:
The chalet is perfect for 2 families but not suitable for babies as there is a small open spiral staircase. Originally built in1928 for a Swiss chemist; Oskar Eckstein, it was the first house in the village to be surrounded by a fence to protect exotic Asian plants from the greedy mouths of the local goats. The chalet brims with character; its former owner Carl Zuckmayer, the celebrated German novelist & playwriter, purchased Haus Vogelweid in 1958 and completely rebuilt it. Zuckmayer spent his post war years in Hollywood writing plays for the likes of Dietrich, naming Bogart & Cooper amongst his friends - you will see evidence of this in the chalet! It was from here that Carl wrote his autobiography; Saas Fee having conferred citizenship on him in 1961. The traditional stone ovens in many rooms bear carvings of his beloved Almagellerhorn and the wood burning stove in the kitchen was last used by his daughter Winnetou in 2004. Carl Zuckmayer died in 1977 aged 80, a Swiss citizen.

Cosy chalet - perfect for two families

The chalet was very nice and clean, well situated in Saas Fee and well equipped. The style is kept in line with the age of the chalet, which only adds to the cosines of the place. Pick up service worked perfectly and the service team was great.

The only thing one has to be aware of is the height of the ceiling here and there, and the beds are not for the tallest people, neither the double beds nor the kids beds.

Owner's Response: Thanks Karina for your feedback, delighted that you liked the location & chalet style; just to add that we are replacing the kids bunkbeds with larger 2 m beds more suited to older teenagers & small adults. The two larger bedrooms have Double beds of standard size but very tall guests will need to grab the King size bed first.

A lovely time

A charming chalet in a charming resort. Chalet Zuckmayer enabled us to enjoy a lovely family Christmas break home from home. Well stocked property. Car free village a great feature of the area. Would happily return.

Great chalet to stay in Saas Fee

Great chalet, well maintained with everything needed... The rooms are spacious and the bathrooms too. Great location in Saas Fee.... the bus stop is just down the street.... We spend the week there as a group of 8 adults and had a wonderful time.

Deborah will give you an useful document with all the necessary information (restaurants, etc.)

I would definitely recommend this place to anyone wanting to spend a great time in Saas Fee.

Watch your head :-)

Our group (6 adults 4 kids ages 1-6) had a great time in chalet Zuchmayer. The apartment has every thing you need for a holiday. The kitchen is nicely equiped with a big fridge, the livingroom with dining table has enough seating available for a big group. The downstair bathroom has a very nice bath to relax in after an active day. Saas Fee is an ideal ski-resort, with nice slopes, good instruction opportunities for kids and decent (although not cheap) restaurants, both in town as on the slopes (expecially the "Gletcher Grotte!". The only problem our group had was the ceiling which is a bit low for our group of tall (Dutch) people (1,93m max.). Deborah and Portia thanks for everything!

stunning holiday apartment

We have had the best holiday in this stunning chalet! From the moment of stepping into the door we felt at home. It's very original, all the old woodwork and features have been carefully and beautifully maintained. The warm and cosy atmosphere with sheepskin rugs on the floorboards and an original stove/fireplace in the kitchen is perfect after a day in the snow. There is lots of room, the layout ideal for families with kids and with 3 bathrooms and a sauna there are plenty of opportunities to have a shower without line-up! The garden is big and invites you to have snowballfights and to build snowmen; our kids spent hours playing out there. The whole chalet is stunning, very well equipped, very clean and definitely not to be missed!

Idyllic chalet with lovely views

A wonderful place to stay!

We spent two weeks there this summer, and found it to be a roomy, comfortable chalet. The wonderful, historic house exudes the kind of atmosphere a new-build chalet cannot reproduce. It is not lacking in amenities either; I especially enjoyed the en-suite sauna after a long day's excursion.

The chalet also has the benefit of being in close proximity to the village centre, yet just far enough to avoid the noise, and just high enough to enjoy the views.

I would highly recommend Chalet Zuckmayer for your next Saas-fee vacation!
