Overview

About the property

1 Bdr/2 Bath + loft surrounded by Coronado National Forest. Walk to trailheads.

Fully Furnished 1 Bdr/2 Bath + loft in Madera Canyon surrounded by the Coronado National Forest. Fabulous porch with swing, glider and room to feed the whole family while watching hummingbirds at your feeder. One of a kind woodwork 'makes' this home. 1326 sf of indoor living space. Central AC/heat. Full kitchen, laundry in basement. Property is walking distance to trailheads, picnic areas and favorite birdwatching spots. It all adds up to the best place for an extended stay in Madera Canyon.

Please note: There is no TV reception (we do have a dvd player). Metered Satellite Internet is provided (but not unlimited). This is a remote property. Your cell phone will have limited connectivity in the canyon (Verizon works best). There is a landline in the cabin. While there are two gift stores in the canyon, the next closest businesses are 15 miles away. I recommend you get gas and stop at the grocery store before you drive into the canyon. Don't forget to buy a bag of sugar to make syrup to feed the hummingbirds!

About Molly Elliott

I spent summers in Tucson, Arizona with my grandparents as a little girl. They had a small cabin in Madera Canyon - one of only a handful of private homes - and my sister and I loved going there on the weekends and playing in the creek or hiking the trail to Mt. Wrightson. As an adult I have returned to visit my grandparents many times with my children to introduce them to the jewel that is Madera Canyon. The photo is of my grandfather blowing bubbles with my daughter off the edge of the porch.

Molly Elliott purchased this house in 1990

Why Molly Elliott chose Arizona

In 1990 my grandparents built the current home which they nicknamed Hummingbird Hill. It sits at a high spot in the canyon which lends itself to beautiful mountain views, sunsets and hummingbird watching. It was their dream retirement home. I have recently inherited it and can't bear to part with it - not only because of the memories but also because of the unique building and location. My husband and I are not able to move to the canyon right now as we have jobs out of state, but hope it can become our dream retirement home as well.

What makes this house unique

The home itself was custom built by Richard Lansky. You won't believe the detailed woodworking. Take a careful look at the photo gallery. Richard still lives in the canyon and helps me with maintenance. The location is also amazing. Madera Canyon is a natural gem and it is minimally developed so you will have tons of opportunities to enjoy nature. The cabin is on private property but borders Coronado National Forest land on all sides. There are a handful of residents in the canyon and it is a popular weekend spot for people from Tucson so you will not be completely alone, but there's still plenty of space for solitude. I love some of the local businesses that rent out by the night, but this is truly the best place for an extended stay as it has a fully equipped kitchen and laundry facility.

Guestbook comments from the manager

I had a super time at the cabin in Madera Canyon in June. The hummingbirds on the porch were unbelievable. I had to get up well before dawn to get the feeders washed, filled up, and out. I did a great hummingbird business until 3 days before the end of my stay when the bees took over. I wasn't sure what to do about them, so I just let them have the lot.

The trails were wonderful. I witnessed an epic fight between a male trogan and a pair of sulfer bellied flycatchers over a nesting space. It went on and on. Pink feathers and yellow feathers were flying. I also got a big thrill over the masses of house wrens raising their families. They are fearless and great hunters. They were fantastic fun to watch. If you sit still long enough, the fledglings would hop all around you. In spite of the no rain, birds were nesting everywhere.

I did have 4 bear encounters over the month. They were the best kind of bear encounters, the kind where the bear makes an annoyed sound and turns and runs away.

You are so lucky to have such a lovely cabin in such a fantastic place. I keep my eye open for places to buy in Madera. Meanwhile, I hope to come back and rent again in 2015.

Madera Canyon is nestled in the northern slopes of the Santa Rita Mountain range east of Green Valley and south of Tucson, Arizona. The flora along with the streams that carved out this canyon help to sustain the many bird, mammal, and insect species that breed and visit here. Visitors from all over the world arrive in search of such avian specialties as the Elegant Trogon, Elf Owl, Sulphur-bellied Flycatcher, and Painted Redstart. Over 230 species of birds have been recorded in the Canyon with 15 hummingbird species among them.

Thousands of birders, hikers, photographers, artists, and those simply seeking a place to enjoy a picnic under the shade of a sycamore tree—next to the cool water of a creek—have fallen in love with Madera Canyon.

Rugged Privacy

  • 5 of 5

We love this place!! We've stayed here two years in a row. Perfect for us because we don't want to be around people and we love birds, wild animals, hiking and sitting in the green swing on the porch! The road to the house can be a challenge and you must have a jeep or other high vehicle. There are steep steps to get and from the entrance. The house is great and has all the things you need except hair dryer. Bring your own food, coffee etc. We hope to go back next year. Owners are great, caretaker is nearby and house is clean. What more can you ask for!!

A great place to unwind

  • 5 of 5

This was an amazing place to stay, spacious, very clean and comfortable, we like to cook and the kitchen was well equipped. Nice to have laundry facilities too. The porch was large and a great place to sit and watch all the birds on the feeders, (bird seed was provided). The one and only thing we thought could be improved upon was to have a bed upstairs rather than a sofa sleeper, there was ample room for one.

We had a wonderful stay and it's on our list of places to visit again. Great value for money.

Nature's Paradise

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Hummingbird Hill for the whole month of March and were wishing we had another month to stay by the first week we had been there. The home is very unique and a little dated, but roomy and plenty comfortable. The kitchen was well stocked and we were able to cook just like at home, it even had a crock pot. But all this is not what made this place so special....

When you go out on the deck of this wonderful home you feel secluded and wondrous of your surroundings. You can look out and see tops of trees and in those trees are the many woodpeckers making nest and hiding acorns. There are turkeys that come in large groups to visit you, we even had a couple who were fighting in the front yard and went over the side onto the driveway coming up to the house. I worried for a bit but they showed back up. Deer came to visit also, they were more sensitive to us being there and didn't stay for long.

Now for the truly most amazing part, to be able to sit in the porch swing and observe all the amazing birds that show up at the feeders...we had Magnificent, Broad billed, Broad tailed, Rufus, Black Chinned, and Costa hummingbirds at the two feeders, at the suet feeders there were Acorn and Arizona Woodpeckers, Bridled Titmouses, and Nuthatches. At the finch feeders there were Lesser Gold finches, Pine siskins, and House finches. Yellow eyed Juncos were everywhere. That is just a list of regular visitors, there were many more in the bushes and trees surrounding the house.

My husband did hike some of the trails in the area and we explored several wildlife areas but we were more than happy to spend most of our time out on the porch enjoying the solitude and wildlife surrounding us.

We were hoping to reserve again next year, even looked online while we were still at the house, but to our dismay it is already reserved for next year until May....so maybe (hopefully) we can come back in 2019.

Thank you so much for sharing you wonderful home with us!

Perfection.

  • 5 of 5

We can't think of anything that would have made our month-long stay more pleasant. The cabin (I hesitate to call it that) is spacious, comfy, and has everything you need. We truly had to pry ourselves out of the gorgeous porch swing to pack up and leave.

peaceful retreat in mountains

  • 5 of 5

This house is an amazing custom built retreat in the mountains. The woodwork throughout the house is interesting and we enjoyed using the stairway over the living room to the upper balcony for great dark sky stargazing. The huge deck has a great view of mountains. We spent many hours just relaxing and enjoying the view. There is a lot of wildlife around including deer, coati , wild turkeys , bats, various birds including hummers, and lizards and squirrels. The house is spacious with a big kitchen and nice bath and comfy bed. We got to hike many of the beautiful trails in the national forest with ever changing views of the mountains and the desert in the distance. One of our most memorable vacation places ever and we cant' wait to come stay here again. Also, great communication with Molly before and during our stay. Thanks again, Molly.
