Imagine a hidden paradise in the heart of the French countryside, where life is filled with simple pleasures: delicious food, fine wines and a secluded garden full of sunshine. Just a few hours south of Paris, this farmhouse is a true idyllic retreat, located in a tiny village that is nestled in a lush green valley. This rural part of France encourages a pace of life that allows for dreaming, relaxing and reconnecting with yourself and with others. Life flows with the rhythm of the days, eddies around meals, and pools deep and clear during late-night conversations under the brilliant stars. It’s a place to think and breathe. The rustic main house has three bedrooms and one bathroom and the garden cabin has the fourth bedroom. In the private garden, there is a 180 degree view of the valley and the woods across the way. There are also many villages and towns of interest to explore in the area, many of which have shops, restaurants and outdoor markets. frenchfarmhouse.ca
About the Farmhouse: The Farmhouse is a rustic but comfortable house in a small farming village, so you can expect to see cows and sheep in the neighbouring fields, not to mention a huge variety of flora and (sometimes astonishing!) fauna. Far from the exclusive villa rentals in the south of France, the Farmhouse offers its guests an authentic immersion experience in the French countryside, in all its natural beauty, and a return to basics with the simpler things in life. As one of our guests commented, “Rental accommodation is too often either too polished and over decorated or unimaginative and utilitarian. We don’t want a swimming pool; just a pleasant place to sit outside for meals and reading books. Your house strikes just the right note for our liking; all the necessary comforts are here and we love the simple furnishings and fittings.”
Inside the Farmhouse: The front door leads directly into the rustic Farmhouse kitchen, which is well-equipped for all your culinary activities, including eating around the table that seats four comfortably, and up to six, if you don’t mind getting cosy. Up three steps from the kitchen is the Tall Bedroom – so named for its high vaulted ceiling with original wooden log beams – where there is a large double bed and a desk. On the next floor landing there is a desk next to a window overlooking the valley. This floor also has the bathroom with a shower and the East Bedroom with a large double bed and more lovely views. The sitting room is found in the attic and is a cosy place to curl up and read one of the many books in the library, watch DVDs, play games or just take a nap. The sectional sofa folds out into a double bed and there are also two bunk beds to provide more sleeping arrangements.
Outside: Out in the garden, there is a private little cabin with a small double bed (or big single) – the perfect place to camp out in the summer! The garden itself has a terrace with a large table (seats 10-12) and parasol, gas barbeque, and the most wonderful views of the valley below.
We so enjoyed the melange of old and new trapppings that create a unique character to this farmhouse. So nice to have modern appliances and a plethora of fine quality of cookware - the frying pan made the best scrambled eggs ever! We explored so many of the surrounding villages that we had little chance to partake of your book library however we had time to watch 4 DVDs - nice collection!
Thank you for keeping the home so well stocked with all the creature comforts of home.
We spend a week with our 2 children, and it was a perfect spot for week of rest and relaxation with the kids. The village and surrounding area is beautiful and the house is very cozy and charming. The garden outside is a great place to relax with a good book and glass of wine while children run around the village and play.
Our French Farmhouse is situated in St Privat du Dragon, a tiny village of about 40 inhabitants, at the head of a picturesque valley in the Haute-Loire département in France. The general region is called the Auvergne; a large, mountainous area of central France. St Privat is about halfway between two large cities, Clermont-Ferrand and Le Puy en Velay (a stop on the pilgrimage route to Santiago di Compostella), and the nearest towns are Brioude and Langeac (both at 15 kms). The Mediterranean is 2.5 hours by car (Montpellier), and Paris is 4.5 hours by train. There are lots of things to see and do: wine-tasting, buying fresh produce at the outdoor markets, shopping for antiques at local brocante markets, visiting châteaux & medieval churches, walking & biking in the beautiful countryside, practising French, savouring local specialities, and especially relaxing with a glass of wine in the secluded garden, delighting in the beautiful view.
Other Activities: canoeing, kayaking, hiking, sight seeing
